Blizzard of Bruises
You press Calder Thorne against the motel room door the moment it slams shut, mouths crashing together, teeth clicking. His designer athleisure is soft under your grabbing hands, a sharp contrast to your own slightly-too-tight Marauders hoodie. He moans, low and filthy, as you palm the erection straining his joggers.
*Fuck, his body,* you think, *Hate how much I want it.*
"Brick," he gasps against your lips, hips rocking, rutting shameless and hard against your thigh. "God, Brick, please."
Your name in his mouth sounds like a curse and a prayer. You spin him, shove him face-first over the cheap laminate desk bolted to the floor. He sprawls, perfect ass arched, legs spreading. The cheap desk lamp throws harsh light over his flushed cheeks, the dark tousle of his hair.
*Just like this,* you think, tearing at your own fly. *Just like this, right fucking now.*
"Rough," he demands, voice muffled by his own arm. "Make it hurt."
You grab his hips, dig your thumbs into the lean muscles, yank him back into you. He cries out, back bowing, palms slapping flat against the wall above the desk to brace himself.
*Jesus, he's tight,* you think, *Like a vise, like coming home.*
You slam into him, relentless, the desk scraping across the thin carpet with each thrust. The blizzard howls outside the thin window, rattling the glass in its frame. Calder pushes back just as hard, demanding, taking everything you give. The air smells like cheap industrial cleaner and sex and his expensive cologne.
*Gonna ruin him,* you think, *Wanna break him open, wanna make him scream.*
Later, sweat cooling on your skin, you stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the window, watching the whiteout conditions outside. The memory of the game hits you: Calder cutting across the neutral zone, fluid and untouchable. You'd lined him up, put him into the boards so hard the glass shivered. He'd gotten up slow, shot you a glare that could melt ice, but you saw the grudging respect there too. The storm had only gotten worse on the drive here.
Down in the motel lobby, the fluorescent lights buzz. You sit in cracked pleather armchairs, nursing styrofoam cups of burnt coffee. The storm rages, howling wind shaking the doors. You're both stuck.
Calder eyes you over the rim of his cup, a ghost of that glare still there. "Didn't know enforcers drank anything but motor oil and broken dreams, Brick."
The old irritation flares, but it's muted now, tangled up with the scent of him still on your skin. "Didn't know primadonnas like you could handle your coffee black," you fire back.
A reluctant smile touches his lips. "Never said I liked it." He leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "That hit tonight... solid. Clean."
The praise surprises you. "You got up."
"Always do." He studies you, that charming grin nowhere in sight. "You play like you've got something to prove, Kovac."
The observation is too sharp. "Don't we all?" you deflect, taking a scalding gulp of coffee.
"Not like you." He pauses, swirling the dregs in his cup. "What's under all that armor, Brick?"
"What's under all that armor, Brick?" Calder asks, his dark eyes searching yours in the harsh fluorescent light of the motel lobby. The question hangs between you, heavier than the snow piling up outside.
*What the hell kind of question is that?* you think, thrown off balance. *Since when does Calder Thorne give a shit about what's underneath anything?*
You cover your unease with a scowl, taking another bitter sip of coffee. "Armor? Don't know what you're talking about, Thorne. I just play the game."
"Right," he says, a knowing glint in his eye. He leans back in the cracked pleather armchair, a sly grin on his lips. "Just the game. Like that hit earlier. Just the game."
*Fuck, he sees right through me,* you think, irritation warring with a strange kind of thrill. *Why is that hot?*
The conversation shifts, the tension easing into something that feels suspiciously like camaraderie. You talk hockey, the grind of the season, the towns you've passed through. Calder's charming, easy to talk to, and you find yourself relaxing, your usual defenses lowering.
Later, when the lobby clears out and the storm shows no sign of stopping, you head back to your separate rooms. But an hour later, a soft knock sounds at your door. You open it to find Calder leaning against the doorframe, snow dusting his dark hair, a determined glint in his eye.
"Couldn't sleep," he says, his voice low and rough. "You?"
You don't answer, just step back to let him in. The door clicks shut behind him, and then you're on each other, mouths crashing together, hands roaming. It's desperate, hungry, like you're trying to crawl inside each other's skin.
*This is a bad idea,* you think, even as you yank his shirt over his head. *This is such a fucking bad idea.*
But it feels too good to stop. Calder's skin is warm and smooth under your rough hands, his body fitting against yours like it was made for you. You tumble onto the bed, all arms and legs and urgent kisses, the storm outside forgotten.
The next morning, you wake up tangled together, Calder's head pillowed on your chest. He's still asleep, his face soft and unguarded in the grey morning light. You watch him for a long moment, something warm and unfamiliar unfurling in your chest.
*Shit,* you think, a flicker of panic sparking to life. *I'm in trouble.*
But it's too late to back out now. Over the next few months, you fall into a pattern. Secret hotel hookups during away games, stolen moments in dark corners of bars and restaurants. You tell yourself it's just sex, just a way to scratch an itch. But the more time you spend with Calder, the more you realize how deeply you're falling.
He's smart, funny, surprisingly sweet beneath his cocky exterior. He listens when you talk, really listens, and he remembers everything. He makes you feel seen in a way no one else ever has.
The playoffs arrive, and suddenly you're facing each other in the championship series. The Marauders against the Rebels, a bitter rivalry with everything on the line. You try to keep things professional on the ice, but it's hard when every hit, every check, feels personal.
In game three, it happens. Calder has the puck, cutting across the neutral zone with that fluid grace you've come to love. You line him up, bracing for impact. It's a clean hit, shoulder to chest, but Calder goes down hard, his head snapping back against the ice.
Your heart stops. Time seems to slow down, the roar of the crowd fading to a dull buzz. You're moving before you even realize it, skating towards him, your stomach in knots.
*Fuck, fuck, fuck,* you think, dread coiling tight in your gut. *Please be okay. Please be okay.*
Calder is slow to get up, shaking his head as he pushes himself to his knees. You reach him just as he's getting to his feet, your hand instinctively going to his elbow to steady him.
"Thorne," you say, your voice rough with worry. "You good?"
He shakes you off, shooting you a glare that's all fire and fury. "Peachy, Kovac," he snaps, his voice tight with pain. "Just fucking peachy."
You let him go, watching as he skates away, your heart pounding in your throat. The game continues, but you're only half there, your thoughts consumed by Calder, by the fear that you've hurt him worse than you realized.
After the game, you find him in the visiting team's locker room, sitting on a bench with his head in his hands. The room is empty, the rest of the Rebels already on the bus back to the hotel. Calder looks up as you approach, his eyes shadowed with pain and exhaustion.
"Hey," you say softly, sitting down beside him. "How's the head?"
"Feels like I went a few rounds with a freight train," he says, his voice rough. "You hit like one, you know that, Brick?"
"Sorry," you murmur, your hand coming up to brush his hair back from his forehead. "I didn't mean to hurt you."
"I know," he sighs, leaning into your touch. "It was a clean hit. I just... I wasn't expecting it to hurt quite that much."
*Because it was me,* you think, the realization hitting you like a punch to the gut. *Because it was us.*
The next few days are a blur of playoff intensity, the series stretching to a decisive game seven. The Marauders win, a hard-fought victory that leaves you battered and bruised but euphoric. Calder finds you in the midst of the celebration, pulling you into a fierce hug that knocks the breath from your lungs.
"Congratulations, champ," he says, his voice warm with feeling. "You deserved this."
Before you can answer, he's kissing you, right there in front of everyone. It's a deep, claiming kiss, all tongue and teeth and desperation. The locker room falls silent around you, the stunned faces of your teammates and staff swimming in your peripheral vision.
*Fuck it,* you think, kissing him back just as fiercely. *Let them look.*
When Calder finally pulls back, his eyes are bright with mischief and affection. "So," he says, his lips quirking into a grin. "Does this mean we're officially a thing now?"
You can't help but laugh, joy bubbling up inside you like champagne. "I guess it does," you say, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear. "Think you can handle dating a Marauder, Thorne?"
"I think I can manage," he says, his smile softening into something tender. "As long as you can handle dating a Rebel."
The next few weeks are a whirlwind of media scrutiny and public speculation, but through it all, Calder is there, steady and sure at your side. You handle the attention together, a united front against the world.
On the night of the championship parade, you find yourselves back at the arena, the ice empty and silent around you. Calder pulls you out onto the freshly resurfaced surface, his skates gliding smoothly next to yours.
"Dance with me, Brick," he says, holding out his hand, his eyes glinting with mischief and affection.
"You're such a sap," you grumble, but you take his hand anyway, pulling him close.
You sway together in the middle of the rink, no music but the sound of your breathing and the scrape of your skates on the ice. Calder's head rests on your shoulder, his arms wrapped tight around your waist. It's peaceful, perfect, a moment of quiet connection amidst the chaos of your lives.
*This,* you think, your heart full to bursting. *This is what I've been looking for all along.*
You hold him closer, inhaling the scent of his hair, the familiar contours of his body against yours. The future stretches out before you, bright and full of promise, and for the first time in a long time, you're not afraid to reach for it.
