The Archivist's Tide
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest. "I learned that they loved each other," I say, my voice barely above a whisper. "I learned that they had something beautiful and rare, something that most people only dream of."
Liam scoffs, his eyes flashing with anger. "They had a fling, Julian. A sordid little affair that ended in heartbreak and ruin. Is that what you want? Is that what you're after?"
I shake my head, my eyes never leaving his. "No," I say, my voice gaining strength with each word. "I want what they had, yes. But I want it to last. I want it to be real and true and lasting."
Liam stares at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "And what makes you think you can have that with me?" he asks, his voice low and dangerous.
I take a step closer, my heart in my throat. "Because I love you, Liam," I say, the words tumbling out of me like a dam breaking. "I've always loved you, from the moment we first met on that windswept beach twenty years ago."
Liam's eyes widen, his face going pale. "Julian..." he says, his voice barely audible above the roar of the storm.
But I don't let him finish. I can't. I have to say this, have to get it out before I lose my nerve.
"I love you, Liam," I repeat, my voice stronger now, more certain. "I love you, and I'm tired of pretending otherwise. I'm tired of hiding, of running, of letting fear and doubt and the expectations of others keep me from what I truly want."
I take another step forward, until we're standing face to face, our bodies almost touching. "I want you, Liam," I say, my voice a low, fervent whisper. "I want you, body and soul. I want to build a life with you, a future. I want to wake up beside you every morning and fall asleep in your arms every night. I want to love you, truly and deeply, for the rest of my days."
Liam stares at me, his eyes wide and shining with unshed tears. "Julian..." he says again, his voice cracking with emotion.
But before he can say anything more, I lean in and kiss him, pouring all my love, all my longing, all my desperation into that one, searing touch.
And for a moment, just a moment, the world falls away, and there is only Liam and me and the roar of the sea and the beat of our hearts, tangled together like the roots of an ancient tree.
He kisses me back, his lips hard and hungry against mine, his tongue slipping into my mouth to taste and tease. His hands tangle in my hair, pulling me closer, and I can feel the heat of his body through the damp fabric of our clothes.
"Julian," he breathes against my lips, his voice rough with desire. "God, Julian, I've wanted this for so long."
"Me too," I whisper back, my hands sliding down his back to cup his firm, muscular ass. "Me too, Liam. More than anything."
He groans low in his throat, his hips rocking against mine, and I can feel the hard length of him through his jeans. "Come on," he says, pulling away just enough to take my hand and lead me towards the cabin. "Come on, before I lose my mind."
I follow him down the narrow stairs, my heart pounding in my chest, my body thrumming with anticipation. The cabin is small and cramped, the air thick with the scent of salt and sweat and fish, but I barely notice, my eyes fixed on Liam as he strips off his oilskin coat and tosses it aside.
He turns to face me, his chest heaving, his eyes dark with need. "Undress me," he says, his voice a low, gravelly command. "I want to feel your hands on me, Julian. I want to feel your skin against mine."
I nod, my fingers trembling as I reach for the hem of his sweater and pull it over his head. His chest is broad and muscular, covered in a light dusting of dark hair that trails down his stomach to disappear into the waistband of his jeans. I run my hands over his skin, marveling at the heat of him, the strength of him, and he shivers under my touch.
"Your turn," he says, reaching for the buttons of my shirt. "I want to see you, Julian. All of you."
I let him undress me, my breath catching in my throat as his fingers brush against my sensitive skin. When I'm finally naked before him, he takes a step back, his eyes roving over my body with a hunger that makes my knees weak.
"God, you're beautiful," he breathes, his voice reverent and raw. "So fucking beautiful, Julian."
And then he's on me, his body pressing against mine, his hands roaming over my skin like he can't get enough. We tumble onto the narrow bunk, our limbs tangling together, our mouths fused in a searing kiss.
We make love with a desperation born of twenty years of longing, our bodies moving together like we were made for each other. It's raw and intense and beautiful, a celebration of everything we've denied ourselves for so long.
As the storm rages outside, as the boat rocks and sways beneath us, I lose myself in Liam, in the feel of him, the taste of him, the sound of his moans and gasps in my ear. And in that moment, I know that I would do anything, risk anything, to hold onto this, to make it last forever.
But even as the thought crosses my mind, I can't help but wonder. Will we be able to break free from the patterns of the past, to build something real and lasting together? Or are we doomed to repeat the same mistakes as Elias and Finn, to let our love slip through our fingers like sand through an hourglass?
Only time will tell, I suppose. Only time will tell.
