The Orchard's Secret
I remembered that night. The air had been heavy and still, the heat of the day lingering even after sunset. I'd filled my washbasin with cool water, splashing it over my flushed skin, welcoming the relief it brought. Unaware of the eyes that watched me from the darkness.
*"She stands before the mirror, her nightgown pooled at her feet. Candlelight gilds her skin, painting shadows in the hollows of her collarbones, the curve of her hip. Her hair falls loose down her back, dark as a raven's wing. She is beautiful. Achingly so. I watch, transfixed, as she dips a cloth into the basin, wringing it out before drawing it over her breasts, her belly, her thighs. Water trickles down her skin like liquid silver, and I am undone. I should look away. I should retreat to the solitude of my bed. But I am rooted to the spot, a prisoner of my own desire."*
Reading her words, I felt exposed. Stripped bare. To know that she had seen me in that unguarded moment, that she had watched me with such raw hunger... it should have shamed me. But instead, a strange warmth pooled low in my belly, a spark of something forbidden and exhilarating.
I closed the journal, my heart pounding against my ribs. The conservatory was dark around me, the orchids looming like silent sentinels in the moonlight. Somewhere in the house, a clock chimed the hour, the sound echoing through the empty rooms.
I knew then that I could not pretend anymore. Could not go on with the polite fiction of our marriage, the careful distance we maintained. Lydia's journal had laid bare the truth of her desire, and in doing so, it had awakened something within me. Something I had never dared to acknowledge, even to myself.
I found her journal hidden among the orchids, and in its pages, I discovered not only Lydia's secrets, but the first stirrings of my own.
I found her in the library, seated behind a vast mahogany desk piled high with ledgers and papers. She looked up as I entered, her green eyes narrowing slightly at the expression on my face.
"Eleanor. Is something amiss?"
For a moment, I hesitated, the carefully rehearsed words fleeing my mind. Then I stepped forward, the journal held out before me like an accusation.
"I found this," I said, my voice trembling only slightly. "Hidden in the conservatory."
Lydia's face went very still, her expression unreadable. She rose slowly from her chair, crossing the room to take the journal from my hand. Her fingers brushed mine, and I felt that same jolt of awareness, the same spark I'd felt in the garden.
"You had no right," she said quietly, her voice a low thrum of anger. "These are private thoughts. Not meant for anyone's eyes but mine."
"Private thoughts about me," I countered, my own anger rising to meet hers. "About us. Did you think I wouldn't want to know the truth? That I would be content to live a lie?"
"It was not a lie." Lydia's voice was tight, controlled. "It was... survival. A way to make sense of the strange alchemy between us."
"Alchemy?" I scoffed, though the word struck a chord within me. "Is that what you call it? Watching me from the shadows? Writing of me as if I were some object of study?"
"You think I don't understand your anger?" Lydia's composure cracked, her eyes blazing with sudden intensity. "You think I don't feel it too? This... this impossible wanting? From the moment you arrived, Eleanor, you have upended everything. My solitude. My certainty. My very sense of self."
She took a step closer, her hand reaching out as if to touch me before she snatched it back. "I tried to keep my distance. To honor the terms of our arrangement. But you... you with your stubborn hope, your relentless beauty... you made it impossible."
Her words hung in the air between us, raw and aching. I saw the vulnerability in her eyes, the fear of rejection that lay beneath her anger. And in that moment, my own anger dissolved, replaced by a desperate, yearning need.
"Lydia," I whispered, and then her mouth was on mine, and there was no more need for words.
The kiss was fierce, almost brutal in its intensity. Her hands fisted in my hair, holding me captive as her tongue plundered my mouth. I clung to her, my body arching into hers, every nerve alight with sensation.
We stumbled back, crashing into one of the bookshelves. A shower of books rained down around us, but we paid them no mind. Lydia's hands were everywhere, tugging at the fastenings of my dress, skimming over my heated skin. I moaned into her mouth, my fingers scrabbling at her shirt, desperate to feel her bare flesh against mine.
Somehow, we made it to the potting shed. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine, the tiny glass enclosure feeling suddenly lush and decadent. Lydia kicked the door shut behind us, her eyes dark with intent.
"Tell me you want this," she rasped, her hands pausing in their exploration. "I need to hear you say it."
"Yes," I breathed, my voice trembling with desire. "God, yes. I want you, Lydia. I want this."
Her mouth curved in a triumphant smile, and then she was on me again, her hands pushing my dress down my shoulders, baring me to her gaze. I shivered as the cool air hit my heated skin, my nipples tightening under her hungry stare.
"So beautiful," she murmured, her fingers tracing the curve of my breast. "So perfect."
She bent her head, drawing one taut peak into her mouth, and I cried out at the shock of sensation. Her tongue was hot, wet, swirling around the sensitive bud until I was writhing beneath her, my fingers tangled in her dark hair.
"Please," I panted, my hips rocking against hers, seeking friction. "Please, Lydia."
She chuckled low in her throat, the sound vibrating through me. "Patience, my dear. We have all the time in the world."
But I was beyond patience, beyond reason. My hands fumbled with the fastenings of her trousers, tugging them down her hips. She helped me, shedding the rest of her clothes with urgent haste until we were both bare, skin against skin.
We tumbled onto the rough wooden floor, heedless of the scattered pots and tools. Jasmine petals drifted down around us, fragrant and soft. Lydia's body covered mine, her thigh pressing between my legs, and I arched into her, desperate for more.
Her hand slid down my body, over the curve of my hip, skimming the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. I parted my legs eagerly, my breath catching in my throat as her fingers found me, slick and ready.
"Lydia," I gasped, my head falling back as she circled my entrance with a teasing touch. "Oh, god."
She entered me slowly, one finger sinking deep inside, and I clenched around her, my body welcoming the invasion. Her thumb found the swollen bud of my desire, circling it with exquisite pressure, and I cried out, my hips bucking wildly.
"That's it," she murmured, her voice rough with desire. "Come for me, Eleanor. Let me feel you."
She added another finger, stretching me, filling me, and I was lost. Wave after wave of pleasure crashed over me, my body shuddering in her arms. I screamed her name, my nails digging into her back, and still she wrung every last ounce of ecstasy from my trembling flesh.
When I finally stilled, she withdrew her fingers slowly, her eyes dark with satisfaction. I reached for her, my hands cupping her face, and drew her down into a deep, languid kiss.
"I love you," I whispered against her lips, the words escaping before I could call them back. "I love you, Lydia Ashford."
She stilled above me, her eyes searching mine. For a moment, I feared I had gone too far, that my confession had shattered the fragile intimacy between us. Then her mouth curved in a smile, tender and fierce and utterly devastating.
"And I love you, Eleanor Winthrop," she said, her voice a low, fervent vow. "More than I ever thought possible."
She kissed me again, deep and slow, and I knew that nothing between us would ever be the same. In the potting shed, surrounded by the heady scent of jasmine, we had found something rare and precious. Something worth fighting for.
I found her journal hidden among the orchids, and in the potting shed, surrounded by blooming jasmine, we began to write a new story of our own.
I found her journal hidden among the orchids, and in the potting shed, surrounded by blooming jasmine, we began to write a new story of our own. But even as our bodies intertwined, as our whispered confessions hung in the fragrant air, I sensed a shadow beneath Lydia's newfound joy. A fear she could not quite conceal, even in our most intimate moments.
