The Unspoken Rule

The buzzing of the tattoo machine filled the small, cozy parlor as I leaned over Chloe's outstretched arm. Her skin, already adorned with an array of colorful tattoos, was about to receive a new addition – the logo of her rugby team. Pixel, my loyal three-year-old terrier mix, watched us intently from his bed in the corner, his tail wagging lazily.

"Make sure it's perfect, Mira," Chloe said, her voice laced with excitement. "I want everyone to know that the Wanderers are the best team in the league."

I smiled, my eyes focused on the intricate design I was etching into her skin. "Don't worry, Chloe. I've got this. Your team's logo will be the envy of all your opponents."

As I worked, I couldn't help but admire the way Chloe's muscles flexed beneath her skin. She was strong, confident, and beautiful – everything I had ever wanted in a partner. But we were just friends, best friends, and I had never dared to cross that line.

"So, how's the dating life treating you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice casual.

Chloe laughed, a rich, melodic sound that filled the room. "Well, I have a date tonight with this woman I met at the gym. She seems pretty cool, but you know how it goes. It's hard to find someone who really gets me."

My heart sank, and I felt a pang of jealousy coursing through my veins. I wanted to be the one who understood her, who loved her for who she was. But I remained silent, focusing on the task at hand.

Pixel, sensing my unease, padded over to me and nudged my leg with his nose. I reached down and scratched behind his ears, finding comfort in his presence.

"Earth to Mira," Chloe said, waving her free hand in front of my face. "Where'd you go just now?"

I shook my head, forcing a smile. "Sorry, just got lost in the design for a moment. You know how I get when I'm in the zone."

Chloe nodded, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I do. It's one of the things I love about you – your passion for your art."

If only she knew that my passion extended far beyond my art, I thought to myself.

As I finished the final touches on the tattoo, I sat back and admired my work. The Wanderers' logo looked incredible on Chloe's arm, a testament to both her dedication to her team and my skill as an artist.

"There you go," I said, wiping away the excess ink. "It's perfect."

Chloe examined the tattoo, her face lighting up with joy. "Mira, it's amazing. Thank you so much."

She pulled me into a tight hug, and for a moment, I allowed myself to savor the feeling of her body pressed against mine. But all too soon, she pulled away, glancing at the clock on the wall.

"Shit, I'm going to be late for my date," she said, jumping up from the chair. "I'll call you tomorrow and let you know how it goes, okay?"

I nodded, my heart heavy. "Sure thing. Have fun, Chloe."

As she rushed out the door, Pixel whimpered softly, his eyes fixed on me. I sighed, reaching down to pet him again.

"Don't worry, buddy," I whispered. "I'll be okay."

But even as I said the words, I knew they were a lie. Watching Chloe go on dates with other women was tearing me apart inside. I wanted to be the one she came home to, the one she shared her hopes and dreams with.

Pixel nuzzled against my hand, his presence a comforting reminder that I wasn't alone. But deep down, I knew that I could never truly be happy until I found the courage to tell Chloe how I really felt.

A continuación...

The next day, I found myself at the rugby pitch, watching Chloe's team practice. I had told myself I was just there to support my friend, but deep down, I knew I was hoping to catch a glimpse of her interacting with her new love interest.

As I sat on the sidelines, Pixel curled up beside me, I couldn't help but overhear snippets of conversation drifting over from the field. Chloe was talking to one of her teammates, her voice carrying on the breeze.

"...and then she took me to this amazing little Italian restaurant," Chloe was saying, her face flushed with excitement. "The food was incredible, and the conversation just flowed so easily. I think I might really like her, you know?"

Her teammate laughed, clapping her on the shoulder. "That's great, Chloe. It's about time you found someone who appreciates you."

I felt my heart constrict in my chest, the jealousy I had been trying so hard to suppress rearing its ugly head. I wanted to be the one making Chloe's face light up like that, the one she couldn't stop talking about.

Pixel whimpered softly, pressing his wet nose against my hand as if sensing my inner turmoil. I scratched behind his ears, taking a deep, shuddering breath.

"Easy, Mira," I whispered to myself. "You can't let her see you like this."

But it was too late. Chloe had spotted me on the sidelines and was jogging over, a wide grin on her face.

"Mira, hey!" she said, coming to a stop in front of me. "I didn't know you were coming to practice today."

I forced a smile, hoping it didn't look as strained as it felt. "I had some free time, thought I'd come watch you guys scrimmage for a bit. How's it going?"

Chloe launched into an enthusiastic recap of their practice so far, her eyes sparkling with passion as she talked about the new plays they were working on. I nodded along, trying to focus on her words rather than the ache in my heart.

As she finished, she glanced back towards the field, where her teammates were starting to pack up. "Listen, a few of us are going to grab drinks after this. You should come with, it'll be fun."

I hesitated, torn between my desire to spend more time with her and my fear of seeing her with someone else. But in the end, my need to be near her won out.

"Sure," I said, standing up and brushing off my jeans. "Sounds good."

Pixel trotted along beside me as we made our way to the nearby bar, his presence a comforting weight against my leg. Inside, the place was already bustling with activity, the air thick with the smell of beer and fried food.

Chloe's teammates had commandeered a large table in the back, their laughter and chatter filling the air. I slid into a seat next to Chloe, Pixel settling at my feet.

As the night wore on, I found myself growing more and more withdrawn, my gaze constantly drawn to the door as I waited for Chloe's date to arrive. Every time a pretty woman walked in, my heart would leap into my throat, only to plummet back down when it became clear she wasn't who I was looking for.

Chloe, to her credit, seemed oblivious to my distress, chatting animatedly with her friends and downing beers like they were water. I sipped at my own drink, the bitter taste of the alcohol doing little to soothe my frayed nerves.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Chloe's date arrived. She was everything I had feared she would be – tall, blonde, and gorgeous, with a confident swagger that made my stomach twist with envy.

Chloe leapt up from her seat, wrapping the other woman in a tight hug before leading her over to the table to introduce her to everyone. As they approached, I felt my heart pounding in my chest, my palms slick with sweat.

"Mira, this is Jenna," Chloe said, her arm draped casually around the other woman's waist. "Jenna, this is my best friend, Mira."

I forced a smile, reaching out to shake Jenna's hand. "Nice to meet you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Jenna smiled back, her grip firm and confident. "You too, Mira. Chloe's told me so much about you."

I felt a pang of sadness at her words, realizing just how much of Chloe's life I was missing out on by keeping my feelings to myself. But I pushed it aside, determined not to let my jealousy ruin the night for everyone else.

As the evening wore on, I watched as Chloe and Jenna grew increasingly cozy with each other, their heads bent close together as they talked and laughed. Every touch, every lingering glance, was like a knife twisting in my heart.

Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I needed to get out of there before I did something I would regret. Leaning over, I tapped Chloe on the shoulder.

"I think I'm going to head out," I said, my voice strained. "Early morning tomorrow."
