Beneath the Olive Branches
“What’s wrong?” Ada murmurs as they pick at their food, the cameras rolling a few feet away.
Billie shakes her head, pushing a piece of bruschetta around her plate. “Nothing,” she says, her voice flat. “Just tired.”
But Ada sees the way her jaw clenches, the tightness around her eyes. “Is this about Valentina?” she asks, her voice low, careful.
Billie’s head snaps up, her gaze sharp, startled. “What? No. Why would it be about her?”
Ada hesitates, Valentina’s venomous words echoing in her mind. “She came by the bakery today,” she says finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “She said… things.”
Billie’s expression darkens, a storm gathering in her eyes. “What kind of things?”
“That I’m a charity case,” Ada says, the words tasting bitter on her tongue. “That you’ll get bored. That you’ll leave.”
Billie stares at her for a long moment, something raw and painful flickering across her face. Then she pushes back from the table, her chair scraping loudly against the tile floor. “Excuse me,” she says, her voice rough, and strides away from the table, leaving Ada alone under the blinding lights.
The host, sensing drama, leans in, her eyes gleaming. “Trouble in paradise, Ada?” she asks, her voice saccharine with fake concern.
Ada forces a smile, her cheeks aching with the effort. “No,” she says, her voice trembling only slightly. “No trouble. Just… a misunderstanding.”
But as she watches Billie disappear into the shadows of the trattoria, her heart clenches, cold and heavy with dread. Valentina’s words echo in her mind, insidious and sharp, and she can’t help but wonder: is this the beginning of the end? Or is it already too late?
The next day, the “Amore Siciliano” producers announce a live finale – a chance for the couples to reaffirm their love in front of a national audience. Ada’s stomach churns at the thought, her conversation with Billie hanging heavy between them, unresolved and aching.
The set is a nightmare of bright lights and shouting crew members, the air saturated with hairspray and desperation. Ada sits beside Billie on a plush love seat, her hands clenched in her lap, her smile plastered on so tight her cheeks ache. Billie is a silent, tense presence beside her, her jaw clenched, her eyes fixed straight ahead.
The host, a man with blindingly white teeth and a voice like syrup, leans in, his microphone hovering between them. “Ada, Billie,” he croons. “Your love story has captured the hearts of viewers across Italy. But rumors have been swirling. Whispers of a rift. Tell us, once and for all – is this the real thing? Or is it all just a beautiful illusion?”
The camera light blinks red, live. Ada’s heart hammers against her ribs, a trapped bird desperate for escape. She looks at Billie, finds her already looking back, her eyes wide, vulnerable, searching.
In that moment, the charade crumbles. The rules, the lies, the carefully constructed performance – it all falls away, leaving only the truth, raw and undeniable.
Ada takes a trembling breath, her fingers finding Billie’s, knotting tightly. “It’s real,” she says, her voice clear, strong, carrying over the sudden hush of the studio. “It’s the most real thing I’ve ever known.”
Billie’s breath hitches, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Ada, I—” she starts, but Ada shakes her head, a small, fierce smile on her lips.
“No more hiding,” she says, turning to face Billie fully, the cameras, the host, the audience fading away until there’s only the two of them, only this moment. “No more pretending. I love you, Billie Green. I love your strength, your kindness, the way you see me – the real me, not the perfect baker or the devoted mother, but all of me, flaws and all.”
Billie’s free hand comes up, cradling Ada’s face, her thumb brushing over her cheekbone in a touch so tender it makes Ada’s heart ache. “I love you, too,” she says, her voice raw with emotion. “So much it scares me. You’re not a charity case, Ada. You’re not a lost cause. You’re… everything.”
They lean in at the same time, their lips meeting in a kiss that is soft, sweet, and achingly real. The studio erupts in cheers and applause, but Ada barely hears it, lost in the warmth of Billie’s embrace, the truth of her words echoing in her heart.
Later, as they step out into the cool night air, hands clasped tight, Ada looks up at the inky sky, the stars winking down at them like tiny, approving eyes. “No more rules,” she murmurs, leaning into Billie’s side.
“No more rules,” Billie agrees, her voice warm, full of promise.
As they walk home, the scent of jasmine heavy on the air, Ada knows this is only the beginning. The future is uncertain, full of challenges and whispers and the ever-present gaze of the public eye. But for the first time in a long time, she’s not afraid. With Billie by her side, she’s ready for anything.
