Bitter Rivalry, Sweet Reward
Carina’s heart leapt at the idea, her mind already racing with possibilities. “But the promotion… there’s only one position.”
Milana’s lips curved in a sly smile. “Is there? The partners have been talking about expanding the senior design team for months. If we present a joint proposal, something that truly blows them away… who’s to say they wouldn’t make an exception?”
Carina’s breath caught at the audacity of the idea, the sheer brilliance of it. “You’re suggesting we combine our proposals? Merge our designs?”
“Why not?” Milana challenged, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “We’ve seen how well we work together. Imagine what we could achieve if we truly collaborated.”
Carina hesitated, her mind whirling with the implications. It was a risk, a huge gamble with everything she’d worked for. But as she looked at Milana, at the fierce determination in her gaze, she knew that it was a risk worth taking.
“Okay,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “Let’s do it.”
They worked through the night, their shared vision taking shape with a speed that left them both breathless. They merged their designs, blending Carina’s bold lines with Milana’s sleek minimalism to create something entirely new, something revolutionary. As the first light of dawn crept through the windows, they stepped back to admire their handiwork, a shared grin spreading across their faces.
The presentation was a blur of nerves and adrenaline, the partners’ faces unreadable as they flipped through the boards. Carina and Milana stood side by side, their shoulders brushing, their hands clasped tightly behind their backs. As the final board was presented, a hush fell over the room, their shared future hanging in the balance.
When the partners finally looked up, their expressions were inscrutable, their eyes giving nothing away. Carina’s heart pounded in her chest, her fingers tightening around Milana’s. This was it. The moment that would define everything.
“Well,” Mr. Henderson, the head of the firm, began, his voice slow and measured. “I have to say, I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.”
Carina’s breath caught, her eyes darting to Milana’s face. The other woman’s expression was calm, composed, but her fingers trembled slightly in Carina’s grasp.
“It’s clear that you two have put an incredible amount of work into this proposal,” Mr. Henderson continued, his gaze sweeping over the boards. “The level of innovation, the attention to detail… it’s truly remarkable.”
He paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. “But I have to ask… whose vision is this, exactly? It’s clear that this is a collaborative effort, but the senior designer position is meant for a single architect.”
Carina’s heart sank, her shoulders slumping in defeat. She should have known that it was too good to be true, that the partners would never go for such an unorthodox approach.
But before she could respond, Milana stepped forward, her voice clear and confident. “With all due respect, Mr. Henderson,” she began, her chin held high. “Carina and I believe that the best design comes from collaboration, from the merging of different perspectives and strengths. We’ve proven that we can work together to create something truly extraordinary. And we believe that the firm would be stronger with both of us at the helm.”
The room fell silent, the partners exchanging glances that Carina couldn’t quite read. Her heart pounded in her ears, her fingers numb where they gripped Milana’s hand.
Finally, Mr. Henderson nodded, a slow smile spreading across his face. “Well then,” he said, his voice warm with approval. “I suppose we’ll just have to make an exception.”
Carina’s breath left her in a rush, her knees going weak with relief. She turned to Milana, her eyes wide with disbelief. “We did it,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “We actually did it.”
Milana’s grin was blinding, her eyes sparkling with tears. “We did,” she confirmed, her voice thick with feeling. “Together.”
As the partners stepped forward to shake their hands, Carina knew that this was only the beginning. She and Milana had a long road ahead of them, a future filled with challenges and triumphs, with late nights and shared victories. But as she looked at the woman beside her, at the fierce love and determination that shone in her eyes, she knew that there was nothing they couldn’t accomplish together.
The promotion was just the start. The real reward was the love they’d found along the way, the partnership that had been forged in the fires of their rivalry. And as they stepped out of the conference room, their hands linked, Carina knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way.
