Blood Debt

He stared at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he smiled, a cruel, twisted thing that didn’t reach his eyes. “You think you can take me on, little girl? You think you can hurt me?”

I smiled back, a razor’s edge of malice. “I don’t think I can, Dante. I know I can. And I’m going to enjoy every second of it.”

The gauntlet had been thrown down, the lines of battle drawn. Dante Moretti had taken everything from me. Now, it was my turn to take everything from him. To make him bleed, to make him suffer, to make him feel every ounce of pain he’d inflicted on me and mine.

The game was on, and I was playing to win. No matter the cost. No matter the consequences.

I didn’t waste any time. I launched myself at him, all teeth and nails, a wild thing unleashed. I went for his eyes, his throat, any soft, vulnerable part of him I could reach. I wanted to hurt him, to make him bleed, to carve my rage into his flesh.

He was bigger than me, stronger, a trained killer to his core. But I had fury on my side, a desperate, reckless need for vengeance. I fought like a woman possessed, like a demon unleashed from hell.

We crashed to the floor in a tangle of limbs, fists flying, teeth snapping. I landed a solid blow to his jaw, his head snapping back, blood blooming on his lip. He snarled, his hand fisting in my hair, yanking my head back with brutal force.

“You little hellcat,” he growled, his free hand wrapping around my throat, squeezing just tight enough to make the blood roar in my ears. “You want to play rough? I’ll give you rough.”

I spat in his face, a mix of blood and saliva. “Fuck you, Dante. Fuck you and your whole goddamn family.”

He smiled, a dark, feral thing, his grip on my throat tightening. “That’s the spirit, baby. Fight me. Make me bleed.”

I did. I fought him with everything I had, every ounce of strength, every shred of will. We rolled across the floor, a whirlwind of violence and rage, of cracking bones and tearing flesh. I was dimly aware of shouts outside, of running feet, of the sound of gunfire in the distance. The Morettis, no doubt, coming to defend their own.

But in that moment, there was only Dante and me, locked in a battle to the death. To the very end.

Until, with a final, brutal blow, he pinned me beneath him, his body heavy and solid, his breath hot against my face. “Enough,” he rasped, his hand still tight around my throat. “It’s enough, Lena.”

I stared up at him, my chest heaving, my body throbbing with pain. “It’ll never be enough,” I snarled, tears stinging my eyes. “Not until you’re dead. Not until they’re all dead.”

“Maybe,” he said, his thumb stroking over my pulse point, a strangely tender gesture in the midst of all the violence. “But today’s not that day. Today, we survive. Together.”

I wanted to argue, to keep fighting, to see this through to the bitter end. But the sounds of chaos outside were getting louder, closer, the gunfire almost constant now. The Morettis were coming, and they wouldn’t stop until we were both dead.

So I nodded, a short, sharp jerk of my head. “Together,” I agreed, my voice raw and ragged.

Dante smiled, a real one this time, a fierce, wild thing that lit up his eyes. “Together,” he echoed, and then he was hauling me to my feet, shoving a gun into my hand, his body shielding mine as he kicked open the cabin door.

We faced the Morettis side by side, a united front against the world. Bullets flew, blood sprayed, the air thick with the stench of gunpowder and death. And through it all, Dante never left my side, his presence a solid, unwavering force at my back.

When the dust finally settled, when the last Moretti had fallen, when the compound was a smoldering ruin around us, Dante turned to me, his eyes dark and intense. “We’re free, Lena. Free to go anywhere, do anything.”

I looked at him, this man who had been my captor, my torturer, my lover, my partner in crime. This man who had taken everything from me, and then given me back my life, my vengeance, my freedom.

“We’re not free,” I said, my voice soft but sure. “We’ll never be free. We’re bound, you and I. Bound by blood and death and this…this thing between us.”

He smiled, a slow, dangerous curve of his lips. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

And then he kissed me, hard and deep, a promise and a threat all rolled into one.

The road ahead was dark and uncertain, paved with violence and danger. But I knew, with a certainty that went bone-deep, that whatever came, Dante Moretti would be at my side. My partner. My equal. My dark, twisted, irrevocably bound other half.

We’d forged our romance in the fires of hell, and nothing, not even death itself, could tear us apart now.
