Brass Proposal
You move through the days with new awareness. His presence is no longer just a shadow at the edge of your vision. It’s a warmth you feel when he passes you in the hall, close enough that his sleeve almost brushes yours. It’s the way his eyes catch yours across the kitchen table and hold, just a beat longer than necessary. It’s the accidental touch of his hand on yours when you both reach for the coffee pot, the contact sending a jolt up your arm that leaves you breathless.
He still doesn’t speak much. But his silence has changed. It’s no longer a wall. It’s an invitation. You find yourself sketching him more often—a quick line capturing the strength of his hands as he mends a fence, the curve of his shoulder as he hauls feed, the rare, fleeting softness around his eyes when he thinks no one is looking.
One evening, the tension finally snaps. It starts innocently enough. Supper. Stew simmering on the stove, the scent of thyme and garlic filling the small kitchen. You’re sketching again, trying to capture the way the setting sun turns the dust motes dancing in the air to flecks of gold. Garrett sits across from you, mending a broken bridle, his movements practiced, efficient.
“The bank called today,” he says, the words dropping into the quiet like stones into a still pond. He doesn’t look up from the leather in his hands.
You lower your charcoal. “And?”
He sighs, a sound heavy with exhaustion. “They’re giving me two months. To show improvement. Or they call the loan.” He finally meets your eyes. The despair in them is a physical blow. “We lost three more head this week. The drought… it’s winning, Maren.”
The use of your name again. It still feels intimate. A secret shared. “We knew it might come to this,” you say carefully, your voice soft. “The contract… it was always a gamble.”
His jaw tightens. “This ranch isn’t a contract. It’s my life. My family’s legacy.” He drops the bridle onto the table with a clatter. “And you… you’re just waiting it out, aren’t you? Biding your time until your green card’s secure and you can vanish back to your life in the city.”
The accusation stings. You set your sketchpad aside, the calm you’d been feeling evaporating. “That’s not fair, Garrett. I’ve worked this land beside you. I’ve sweated for it. Bled for it.”
“Have you?” He leans forward, his eyes blazing. “Or have you just been playing at ranch life? Passing time between painting those pretty pictures of a dying dream?” He gestures toward your stack of canvases leaning against the wall, the storm scenes vivid and wild.
Anger flares, hot and bright. You stand, your chair scraping harshly against the floor. “Those ‘pretty pictures’ might be the only thing keeping this place afloat! Or have you forgotten the gallery owner in Billings who wants to showcase them? Who’s talking about buyers?”
He stands too, his frame looming over you in the small kitchen. “And what if it doesn’t work, Maren? What if the buyers don’t come? What if the rain never falls? What then?” His voice is low, dangerous. “Will you still be here when the bank takes the keys? Or will you be long gone, your signature on a deed that’s worthless?”
The question hangs in the air, sharp as broken glass. The fear beneath it – of losing everything, of being abandoned – is raw, exposed. It mirrors your own fear, the one that kept you awake at night long before you met him. The fear of being discarded. Of being nothing.
“You think I don’t know about worthless?” you demand, your voice trembling with the force of your emotion. “My whole life was worthless before this. Paintings nobody bought. A future evaporating with my visa. You think I don’t understand what it means to have everything hanging by a thread?” You step closer, your chest almost brushing his. “I’m fighting for this place, Garrett. Just like you. Not because of a contract. But because it’s real. Because for the first time in my life, I’m not running. I’m staying.”
He stares at you, his breath coming hard, his eyes searching yours. The anger drains from him slowly, replaced by something darker, hotter. The air between you crackles. The kitchen, bathed only in the moonlight streaming through the window, feels suddenly too small. Too intimate.
“Maren,” he rasps, and your name on his lips is your undoing.
You don’t know who moves first. One moment there’s space between you, the next it’s gone. His hands are on your face, rough and warm, tilting your head back. Your hands fist in his shirt, pulling him down. His lips crash onto yours, hard, desperate. It’s nothing like the almost-kiss by the fire. This is hunger. This is claiming.
He backs you against the counter, the edge digging into your spine. His body presses into yours, solid, unyielding. You gasp against his mouth, and he uses the opening, his tongue sliding against yours, hot and insistent. The taste of him – coffee, salt, something wild and male – floods your senses. His hands tangle in your hair, anchoring you, holding you captive to the assault of his mouth. You respond with equal fervor, nipping at his lower lip, sucking his tongue, pouring every ounce of your frustration, your fear, your unexpected need into the kiss.
It’s not enough. His hands leave your hair, slide down your back, cup your ass and lift you onto the counter in one fluid motion. You wrap your legs around his waist, pulling him tighter against you. He groans into your mouth, the sound vibrating through you. His erection presses against you through your jeans, hard and undeniable. You rock against him, the friction sending sparks through your veins.
He breaks the kiss, dragging his mouth down your jaw, your neck, sucking and biting at the sensitive skin. You tilt your head back, granting him access, your breath coming in ragged gasps. His hands are everywhere – sliding under your shirt, calloused palms scraping against your ribs, your stomach, leaving trails of fire in their wake. You fumble with the buttons of his shirt, desperate to feel his skin. He bats your hands away, yanking the shirt over his head in one impatient movement. Moonlight paints the muscles of his chest, the dusting of dark hair, the scars that tell stories of labor and hardship. You run your hands over him, exploring the heat of his skin, the strength beneath.
He makes a low sound, almost a growl, and reaches for the hem of your shirt. You raise your arms, letting him pull it off. The cool night air hits your skin, but you don’t feel it. All you feel is his gaze, hot and hungry, roaming over your lace-clad breasts. He reaches behind you, unhooking your bra with a deftness that surprises you. It falls away, and then his hands are on you, shaping you, his thumbs rasping over your nipples. You arch into his touch, a whimper escaping your lips.
“Garrett,” you breathe, the word a plea, a demand.
He answers by lowering his head, sucking one hardened peak into his mouth. The wet heat, the scrape of his teeth, the pull of his tongue – it’s electric. You bury your fingers in his hair, holding him to you, your legs tightening around his waist. He moves to the other breast, lavishing it with the same attention, until you’re writhing against him, mindless with need.
His hands drop to your jeans, making quick work of the button and zipper. He peels them down your legs, taking your panties with them, leaving you bare under the moonlight. He steps back, his chest heaving, his eyes dark with want as he takes you in. You’ve never felt so exposed, so desired. You reach for him, but he catches your hands, pinning them to the counter beside your hips.
“Not yet,” he rasps, his voice guttural. He sinks to his knees before you, his breath hot against your inner thigh. His hands push your legs wider, opening you to him completely. You tremble, anticipation coiling tight in your belly. Then his mouth is on you, hot and wet and devastatingly skilled. You cry out, your head falling back, your hands scrabbling for purchase on the countertop. He licks into you like a man starving, his tongue swirling around your clit, sucking, stroking, driving you higher and higher. He slides a finger inside you, then another, filling you, stretching you, his mouth never leaving its torture. The combination is exquisite, overwhelming. You rock against his mouth, shameless in your need, chasing the release building like a storm inside you. He curls his fingers, hitting a spot that makes stars burst behind your eyes.
“Garrett… please…” you gasp, your voice breaking.
