Climbing Towards Us
I nodded, my heart full and light. "Ready."
The Italian place Jules had chosen was cozy and intimate, with checkered tablecloths and candles flickering on each table. We ordered pasta and wine, falling into easy conversation as we waited for our food.
"So, how did you get into ranching?" I asked, twirling my wine glass between my fingers. "It seems like such a big undertaking."
Jules leaned back in their chair, a nostalgic smile on their face. "It's kind of a family tradition. My grandparents started the ranch, and my parents took it over when they retired. I grew up helping out, learning the ropes. It just always felt like home to me."
I smiled, charmed by the picture they painted. "That sounds really special, to have that connection to your family history."
Jules nodded, their expression soft. "It is. I feel really lucky to be able to continue their legacy."
Our conversation flowed easily from there, touching on everything from our childhoods to our hopes for the future. I found myself opening up to Jules in a way I rarely did with anyone, sharing parts of myself I usually kept hidden.
By the time our plates were cleared and the check was paid, I felt closer to Jules than I ever had before. As we stepped out into the cool night air, I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself.
"Here," Jules said, shrugging out of their jacket and draping it over my shoulders. "Can't have you catching cold."
I smiled up at them, touched by the gesture. "Thank you."
We started walking, our hands brushing with each step. The city was quiet at this hour, the streets mostly empty. Streetlights cast pools of golden light on the sidewalk, guiding our way.
As we walked, Jules reached for my hand, lacing our fingers together. I looked up at them, my heart in my throat.
"Rowan," they said softly, their voice a low rumble. "I've been wanting to do this for a while now."
They stopped walking, turning to face me. Slowly, they reached up, cupping my face in their calloused hands. I leaned into the touch, my eyes fluttering closed.
When their lips touched mine, it was everything I'd been dreaming of and more. The kiss was soft, gentle, a promise of things to come. I melted into it, my free hand coming up to tangle in the soft fabric of Jules' shirt.
We stood there for a long moment, lost in each other, the rest of the world falling away. When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless, our foreheads pressed together.
"Wow," I whispered, my voice rough with emotion.
Jules chuckled, the sound deep and rich. "Wow is right."
They leaned in for another quick kiss before stepping back, their hand still clasped tightly with mine. "Come on," they said, their voice rough with promise. "Let's get you home before I lose all sense of propriety."
I laughed, the sound echoing through the quiet street. "Yes, please."
As we walked hand in hand through the city, I marveled at the unexpected turn my life had taken. Just a few short months ago, I'd been lost, searching for a sense of self I couldn't quite grasp. Now, with my electric blue hair and Jules by my side, I felt more like myself than I ever had before.
I didn't know what the future held, but I knew that with Jules, I could face anything. Our relationship was still new, still fragile, but it was built on a foundation of trust, respect, and genuine affection. I couldn't wait to see where it would take us next.
The weeks that followed passed in a blur of shared laughter, quiet conversations, and stolen kisses. Jules and I fell into an easy rhythm, our lives intertwining more with each passing day.
Weekends were spent at Jules' ranch, a sprawling property nestled in the rolling hills outside the city. The first time I visited, I was struck by the quiet beauty of the place. The air was clean and crisp, scented with hay and wildflowers. The only sounds were the distant lowing of cattle and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.
"It's so peaceful here," I said, spinning in a slow circle to take it all in.
Jules smiled, pride evident in their stance. "It is. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live somewhere like this."
I reached for their hand, lacing our fingers together. "Thank you for sharing it with me."
Jules squeezed my hand, their calloused palm warm against mine. "I'm glad you're here."
They showed me around the ranch, introducing me to the horses and cattle that called it home. I watched, fascinated, as Jules mucked out stalls and repaired fences, their movements efficient and practiced.
"Want to help?" they asked, holding out a pitchfork.
I hesitated, eyeing the tool warily. "I don't want to slow you down."
Jules laughed. "You won't. Come on, I'll show you how."
Hesitantly, I took the pitchfork, following Jules into the stall they were cleaning. They demonstrated the proper technique, their muscles flexing beneath their flannel shirt as they worked.
"Your turn," they said, stepping back.
I took a deep breath and dug in, mimicking Jules' movements. It was harder work than I'd anticipated, but there was something satisfying about it too. As we worked side by side, I felt a sense of accomplishment I rarely experienced outside the lab.
"Thank you," I said later, as we washed up in the big farmhouse kitchen. "For teaching me, I mean."
Jules grinned, bumping my shoulder with theirs. "Anytime. It's nice to share this part of my life with you."
I smiled back, drying my hands on a dish towel. "I feel the same way about my work."
Jules' interest in my research never waned. They listened intently as I described my experiments, asking insightful questions that showed they'd been paying attention.
"I had no idea plants were so complex," they said one evening as we sat on the porch watching the sunset. "It's amazing, the work you're doing."
I flushed, pleased by their praise. "Thank you. It's not always easy, but I love it."
Jules nodded, their expression thoughtful. "I can tell. You light up when you talk about it."
I leaned into their side, resting my head on their shoulder. "I feel the same way when you talk about the ranch."
We sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, the last rays of the sun painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. As the stars began to appear overhead, I felt a deep sense of contentment wash over me. Here, with Jules by my side, I was truly happy.
Of course, no relationship is without its challenges. There were times when our differing schedules and commitments made it hard to find time for each other. Jules' work on the ranch was never-ending, and my research often kept me late at the lab.
There were disagreements, too. Small things, mostly, like Jules forgetting to call when they said they would, or me getting so caught up in my work that I forgot about our plans. But we always talked things through, hashing out our issues with open and honest communication.
"I'm sorry," Jules said one evening after a particularly tense argument. "I know I've been distant lately. Things have just been so busy at the ranch."
I nodded, swallowing past the lump in my throat. "I know. I've been busy too. We just need to make more of an effort to prioritize each other."
Jules reached for my hand, squeezing it gently. "You're right. I don't want to lose what we have."
"Me neither," I whispered, blinking back tears.
We made a pact that night to always put our relationship first, no matter how busy our lives got. It wasn't always easy, but somehow, we made it work.
As the months passed, I found myself spending more and more time at the ranch. Jules had set up a small lab for me in one of the outbuildings, a space where I could work on my research even when I was away from the city.
"It's not much," they said, showing me around the converted shed. "But I thought it might be nice for you to have your own space out here."
I turned in a slow circle, taking in the shelves lined with my equipment, the desk set up in the corner. "Jules, this is amazing. Thank you."
They shrugged, but I could see the pleased smile tugging at the corners of their mouth. "I wanted you to feel at home here."
I stepped closer, wrapping my arms around their waist. "I do," I said softly. "More than anywhere else."
Jules held me close, their chin resting on top of my head. "I'm glad."
Life settled into a comfortable routine after that. During the week, I stayed in my apartment in the city, working long hours at the lab. On weekends, I made the drive out to the ranch, eager to spend time with Jules.
