Cobalt Marker Forty-Seven
Nobody turns toward Dev. Nobody asks whether he is hurt. The group changes direction as naturally as water finding a different groove in dirt.
It is polished instruction. That is all.
The lower shelf gives Dev enough stable ground to stop favoring one leg. By the time they reach the north wash junction, his ankle has settled into a contained, familiar ache.
The proposed location for Marker Forty-Seven is marked by a wooden stake. Dev studies it, then studies the wash, the distant water station, the shaded shelf, and the next visible cairn.
“Not here,” he said.
Isidro crouches beside the stake. “Where?”
“Fourteen meters back.” Dev measures with his steps. “Before people begin choosing. Put the cobalt band toward the shelf. Water symbol on the lower arc. The next point has to remain visible from the marker, not from wherever someone wishes they had stopped.”
Isidro checks the angle, then calls the others over.
“Dev recalculated the sightline and heat exposure,” Isidro said. “Marker Forty-Seven moves fourteen meters west. Add the lower shelf to your notes. This makes the route safer for everyone using it.”
The other residents write it down. Someone says, “Good catch.”
Dev puts his pencil behind his ear because there is nowhere else for his hands to go.
On the return route, Isidro sets an easy pace. He pauses twice to ask the group what details they would want after a wrong turn: texture underfoot, sun position, distance to water, the shape of the next ridge. Dev answers when he has something useful. Isidro does not mention the ankle again.
At four thirty, Dev returns to his cabin after a shower and finds three things waiting outside his door.
A cool cloth rests in a lidded enamel bowl packed with chipped ice. Beside it sits a small paper bag of salted cashews and dried apricots, exactly as listed on his intake form, with no raisins hidden among them. Underneath is a revised route map in a clear sleeve. The lower shelf is marked in cobalt. The alternate exit is marked in orange. A note in Isidro’s clean block letters reads:
OPTION B KEEPS THE SHADE LINE. NO RESPONSE NEEDED. —I
Dev stands there longer than he means to.
There is no request for thanks. No invitation disguised as a favor. No future bill tucked into the margin.
Isidro knows how to run a course. He knows what people need before they ask, and he offers it where nobody can confuse help with ownership.
That skill has a name: polished instruction.
Dev opens the cashews and tells himself he has identified it correctly.
Tile Three arrives the following afternoon beneath Dev’s cabin door, its stamped route reading EAST RIDGE RETURN / 8:05 P.M. The group walks out at dusk, watching trail color drain from rust-red to violet while Isidro points out every place a marker must still make sense after daylight quits. Dev notes how the north wash loses its edges first.
Afterward, the residents carry their test tiles to the kiln bay. By the time the firing settles into its long, watchful heat, everyone else has gone to bed.
Dev stays at a side table with a sponge and a cup of water, cleaning a failed cobalt line from the inside of his wrist. Blue glaze ropes around both arms, bright as little rivers under the lamps. The kiln’s peepholes burn orange. Outside the open archway, the desert has become a black bowl full of stars.
The screen door clicks.
“You’re still here,” Isidro said.
“So are you.”
“I have the firing log.” Isidro lifts it slightly. “And I saw the lights.”
“I’m cleaning.”
“You can be cleaning and lonely at once.”
Dev looks down at his wrists. “That is a very presumptuous thing to say.”
“It is.” Isidro’s grin fades into something more careful. “Do you want company, a kiss, or neither?”
The choices arrive cleanly, with no hook hidden under them. Dev could say neither. Isidro would leave. He knows it with an instinct he resents for believing it.
“Both,” Dev said. “Company and a kiss.”
“All right.” Isidro sets the log beside the kiln. “Would you rather do that here, or somewhere that isn’t beside two hundred pounds of hot brick?”
“Somewhere else.”
“Good call.”
The glaze room is small and whitewashed, with shelves of labeled jars and a canvas cot used by staff during overnight firings. Isidro closes the door but leaves it unlatched.
“Closed, not locked,” he said.
Dev’s chest loosens by a degree. “Closed, not locked.”
“Can I touch your face?”
“Yes.”
Isidro’s palm settles along Dev’s jaw. He does not rush. His mouth rests against Dev’s for one suspended second, waiting for Dev to move first.
Dev tips forward.
The kiss opens slowly. Mint tea and salt live on Isidro’s mouth. Dev catches the yellow fabric at Isidro’s waist, feeling muscle shift beneath it, and kisses him harder because he does not know what else to do with the sudden, fierce want.
Isidro follows without taking over.
“Still good?” he said.
“Yes.”
“Can I kiss your neck?”
“Yes.”
Isidro kisses beneath Dev’s ear, then lower. His other hand stays at Dev’s side, visible and still.
“Can I put my hand under your shirt?”
Dev’s laugh comes out thin. “You really do ask every time.”
“I can stop asking if you want.”
“No.” Dev pulls back enough to see him. “Don’t stop asking.”
“Okay.”
“Under my shirt. And under yours.”
“Okay.”
Every question turns heat into something Dev can hold. Not a trapdoor. A row of doors, each one his to open.
Isidro lifts Dev’s shirt only when Dev raises his arms. Cool room air settles over his skin. Isidro looks at him with open appreciation, no hurried assessment, no attempt to turn Dev into a problem to solve.
“You’re beautiful,” Isidro said.
Dev nearly makes a joke. It waits behind his teeth and fails to arrive.
“Say it again,” he said.
“You’re beautiful.”
Dev pushes Isidro’s shirt over his head. Cobalt dust marks Isidro’s shoulder and one hip, as though the kiln has signed him. Dev presses his mouth to the blue smear. Isidro makes a pleased sound and bends closer.
“Can I touch you?” Dev said.
“Yes. Please.”
Dev runs both hands over Isidro’s ribs, then lower, stopping at the button of his work pants. “Here?”
“Yes.”
Isidro’s hand covers Dev’s through the fabric. Not steering. Just there.
“You’re doing so well,” Isidro said.
Praise lands in Dev’s body with embarrassing force. He undoes Isidro’s pants, then his own. Their cocks rise between them, hard and flushed. Dev has seen bodies before. He has wanted men and women before. Want has never been the confusing part.
Being wanted carefully is another kind of exposure.
“Do you want my hand?” Isidro said.
“Yes.”
“Over your cock?”
“Yes.”
Isidro closes his hand around him, firm and slow. Dev puts his own hand around Isidro’s cock. They move together for a few minutes, learning pressure, rhythm, the places where each man’s breath changes.
“More,” Dev said.
“Like this?”
“Yes. Exactly.”
Dev lowers to his knees beside the cot. Isidro’s hand falls away from him at once.
“You don’t have to,” Isidro said.
“I want to.” Dev looks up. “Can I use my mouth?”
“Yes. I want that.”
Dev takes Isidro in hand first, feeling the hard length and the small pulse beneath skin. A bead of precome shines at the tip. He licks it away, then closes his mouth around the head of Isidro’s cock.
Isidro’s knees loosen.
“Oh, Dev,” he said. “That feels incredible.”
Dev takes more, working the shaft with his hand as his mouth moves. Isidro keeps one hand braced on the cot, the other lifted away from Dev.
“Can I touch your hair?” Isidro said.
“Yes.”
Isidro’s palm settles lightly at the back of Dev’s head. Nothing presses. Nothing takes.
“You’re so good at listening,” Isidro said.
Dev’s pride brightens low in his stomach. He brings Isidro near the edge, then pulls back when Isidro’s body tightens.
“Your turn,” Isidro said.
Dev stands, unsteady only in the practical sense. Isidro guides him onto the cot with another question, another yes. He kneels between Dev’s knees.
“Do you want my mouth?”
“Yes,” Dev said. “Please.”
“Tell me if you want less.”
“I will.”
Isidro wraps one hand around Dev’s cock and takes him into his mouth. Dev grips the canvas seam beneath him. Isidro works him patiently, pausing whenever Dev shifts, looking up each time as if Dev’s body is speaking a language worth studying.
Dev tries to last. He fails quickly.
“I’m coming,” he said.
“I know. Give it to me.”
Dev comes with Isidro’s mouth around him, pleasure breaking through every careful rule he has built. Isidro stays with him through it, then eases back and reaches for the water bottle on the floor.
“Drink,” Isidro said.
Dev drinks.
When his body settles, he reaches for Isidro. “Come here.”
“Are you sure?”
