Desert Steel

Jagger comes up behind you, his arms sliding around your waist, his chin resting on your shoulder. “It’s not much,” he says, his voice a low rumble against your back. “But it’s safe. And it’s ours.”

You lean into him, savoring his warmth, his strength. “Ours,” you repeat, the word a promise on your tongue. “I like the sound of that.”

He turns you in his arms, his hands framing your face, his eyes searching yours. “We’ll figure this out, Jessa,” he says, his voice fierce, determined. “I won’t let them hurt you. I won’t let them take this away from us.”

You believe him. With every fiber of your being, you believe him. “I know,” you say, rising up on your toes to brush a kiss against his lips. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

He kisses you back, slow and deep, a promise of forever. When he pulls back, there’s a light in his eyes you’ve never seen before – hope, pure and bright and unshakable. “Together,” he echoes, and you know, deep in your bones, that whatever comes next, you’ll face it side by side, strong and unbreakable, a force to be reckoned with.

For now, you’re safe. For now, you’re together. And for now, that’s enough.

You don’t know how long you stay there, lost in each other, the world outside forgotten. It could be minutes, hours, an eternity. But the spell breaks, as it always does, shattered by the sound of engines in the distance, growing louder, closer. Your body tenses, your arms tightening around Jagger instinctively. He tenses too, his head lifting, his eyes narrowing as he scans the tree line.

“They found us,” you breathe, your voice tight with fear.

Jagger’s jaw clenches, a muscle ticking in his cheek. “Faster than I thought they would,” he admits, his voice grim. He meets your gaze, his eyes fierce, determined. “Stay behind me, okay? No matter what happens.”

You nod, your heart pounding a frantic rhythm against your ribs. You trust him, you do, but the thought of facing down the Renegades again, of seeing that cold fury in Rusty’s eyes… it terrifies you. Jagger must see the fear in your eyes, because he cups your face in his hands, his touch gentle, reassuring.

“Hey,” he says, his voice low and steady. “I won’t let them hurt you. I promise.” He presses a quick, hard kiss to your lips, a silent vow. “We’ll get through this. Together.”

You nod again, drawing strength from his certainty, his unwavering resolve. You take a deep breath, squaring your shoulders, steeling yourself for whatever comes next. Jagger takes your hand in his, his grip strong, anchoring, and together, you turn to face the approaching threat.

The bikes come into view, six of them, the same six from this morning. They park in a loose semicircle, blocking the trail, their engines cutting off one by one, leaving an eerie silence in their wake. Rusty dismounts first, his face a mask of cold fury as he strides toward you, the other Renegades falling into step behind him. You spot the two who dragged Jagger away, their faces bruised and swollen, and a fierce surge of satisfaction rises in you. Jagger didn’t go quietly.

Rusty stops a few feet away, his eyes raking over you, over Jagger, his lip curling in a sneer. “Thought you could hide, huh?” he says, his voice dripping with disdain. “Thought you could run from your problems?” He shakes his head, a harsh laugh escaping him. “You never were very smart, Jagger.”

Jagger tenses beside you, his hand tightening in yours, but his voice is calm, controlled when he speaks. “This doesn’t have to get ugly, Rusty. Just let us go. We’re not a threat to you.”

Rusty’s eyes narrow, his fists clenching at his sides. “Not a threat?” he repeats, his voice rising with each word. “You betrayed your brothers! You turned your back on the club! On everything we stand for!” He takes a step forward, his gaze boring into Jagger’s. “You made your choice, Jagger. Now you have to live with the consequences.”

Jagger meets his gaze unflinchingly, his chin held high, his shoulders squared. “I did make my choice,” he says, his voice clear and strong. “I chose Jessa. I chose a future that doesn’t involve violence and bloodshed and blind loyalty to a man who’s lost his way.” He glances at you, his eyes softening for just a moment, a world of emotion in that single look. “I chose love, Rusty. Real love. The kind that builds something, instead of tearing it down.”

Rusty’s face darkens, his eyes flashing with rage. “Love?” he scoffs, the word sounding ugly, profane on his lips. “You think this is about love? This is about loyalty, Jagger. About brotherhood. About the oath you swore when you put on that cut.” He spits on the ground at Jagger’s feet, the gesture deliberate, insulting. “You’re no brother of mine. Not anymore.”

Jagger doesn’t flinch, doesn’t look away. “Maybe not,” he says, his voice steady, unwavering. “But I’m still a man. A man who knows right from wrong. A man who’s trying to be better than the things he’s done.” He takes a step forward, putting himself between you and Rusty, a human shield against the tide of anger rolling off the other man. “I won’t let you hurt Jessa, Rusty. I won’t let you destroy the only good thing I’ve ever had.”

Rusty’s eyes flick to you, his gaze cold, calculating. “And what about you, girl?” he says, his voice dripping with venom. “You think he’s worth it? Worth turning your back on everything? Worth painting a target on your back for the rest of your life?”

You lift your chin, meeting his gaze head-on, your voice just as steady as Jagger’s. “He’s worth everything,” you say, the words ringing with conviction. “He’s the best man I’ve ever known, and I’ll stand with him no matter what.”

Rusty’s face twists into a sneer, his lips curling back from his teeth. “Stupid girl,” he snarls. “You have no idea what you’re getting into.” He turns back to Jagger, his eyes hard, implacable. “Last chance, Jagger. Come back with us now, leave the girl, and we’ll forget this ever happened. We’ll welcome you back into the fold, no questions asked.”

Jagger doesn’t hesitate, not even for a second. “No,” he says, the word final, unshakeable. “I’m not leaving Jessa. Not now, not ever.”

Rusty’s face flushes with rage, his control snapping like a brittle twig. “Fine,” he snarls, his hand going to the gun at his hip. “Have it your way.” He takes a step forward, his eyes locked on Jagger, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Jagger tenses beside you, ready to move, ready to fight, but you act before he can, stepping out from behind him, your hands held up in a gesture of peace. “Wait,” you say, your voice clear and strong, cutting through the tension like a knife. “There’s something you should know, Rusty.”

Rusty freezes, his gun half-drawn, his eyes narrowing on you. “And what’s that?” he growls, his voice dripping with skepticism.

You take a deep breath, your heart pounding against your ribs, but your voice is steady when you speak. “I have proof,” you say, the words clear and strong in the quiet. “Proof of everything the Renegades have done. Every deal, every drop, every body buried in the desert.” You meet his gaze unflinchingly, a small, grim smile playing at the corners of your mouth. “I’ve been documenting it for months. Every transaction, every meeting, every crime. And if anything happens to Jagger or me… if either of us turns up dead or disappears… that proof goes public. To the cops, to the media, to every major news outlet in the country.”

Rusty stares at you for a long moment, his face unreadable, his hand still hovering over his gun. The other Renegades shift behind him, a low murmur rising among them, their eyes wide with shock, with dawning fear. You can see the calculations running behind Rusty’s eyes, the wheels turning as he weighs his options, his chances.

“You’re bluffing,” he says finally, but there’s a thread of uncertainty in his voice, a flicker of doubt in his eyes.

You reach slowly into your pocket, pulling out your phone, holding it up for him to see. “Try me,” you say, your voice cool, unwavering. “I’ve got it all right here. Encrypted, backed up in multiple locations. One call, and it’s out there. For everyone to see.”

Rusty’s jaw clenches, his eyes flashing with impotent rage. He knows you’re not lying. He knows you’ve got him by the balls. “You stupid bitch,” he snarls, his voice trembling with fury. “You think you’ve won? You think this changes anything?”

“It changes everything,” Jagger says, his voice calm, controlled. He steps forward, putting himself between you and Rusty, his body shielding yours. “It’s over, Rusty. The Renegades… they’re finished. You’re finished.”
