Embers
Ethan pulled back first, his eyes dark and unreadable in the dim light. He eased out of her slowly, his hands gentle on her hips, and reached for his discarded clothes. Lila watched him, her body still trembling from the aftershocks of her orgasm, a strange mix of satisfaction and vulnerability swirling inside her. She’d never been one for casual encounters, for losing herself in a moment of passion with someone she barely knew. But something about Ethan, about this night, had stripped away all her usual defenses, leaving her raw and exposed in a way that both thrilled and terrified her.
“We should—” Ethan started, his voice rough, but he cut himself off, shaking his head. He finished dressing in silence, his movements quick and efficient, as if he were suddenly eager to put some distance between them. Lila followed suit, tugging on her jeans and tank top, her fingers fumbling with the buttons and straps. The air between them felt charged now, thick with unspoken words and the lingering heat of their passion.
“Your room,” Lila blurted out, the words escaping before she could stop them. She felt her cheeks flush, but she held his gaze, refusing to back down. “It’ll be more comfortable than the kitchen counter.” She tried for a teasing smile, but it felt forced, brittle. “And warmer.”
Ethan hesitated, his eyes searching hers for a long, breathless moment. She could see the conflict in his face, the same war she was waging inside herself – the desire to lose himself in her again, to forget the world and the storm and the loneliness that had dogged him for so long, warring with the instinct to pull away, to retreat back into his shell. But then he nodded, a slow, deliberate movement that sent a fresh wave of heat through her veins. “Okay,” he said, his voice low and rough. “My room.”
He took her hand again, his fingers warm and solid around hers, and led her out of the kitchen, back through the common room, and up the narrow staircase to the second floor. The lodge felt different now, the shadows deeper, the silence heavier, as if the storm had seeped into the very walls, transforming the space into something altogether more intimate and charged.
Ethan’s room was small and sparsely furnished, with a large bed dominating the space and a desk tucked into one corner, piled high with books and papers. A single window looked out onto the snow-covered landscape, the glass frosted at the edges. He closed the door behind them, the soft click of the latch echoing in the quiet room, and turned to face her, his eyes dark and hungry in the dim light.
Lila’s breath caught in her throat as he advanced on her, his movements slow and deliberate, a predator stalking his prey. He backed her toward the bed, his hands skimming up her arms, over her shoulders, tangling in her hair. His kiss was deep and possessive, his tongue sweeping into her mouth, claiming her, branding her. She melted into him, her body molding to his, her arms winding around his neck to pull him closer.
They tumbled onto the bed in a tangle of limbs, their hands roaming, their mouths never parting for more than a moment. Ethan’s touch was urgent now, almost frantic, as if he were trying to map every inch of her skin, to memorize the feel of her beneath him. Lila matched his fervor, her fingers skimming over the hard planes of his chest, the ripple of his abs, the dip of his hips. She tugged at his clothes, impatient to feel him skin to skin again, to lose herself in the heat and strength of his body.
The storm outside was forgotten, the world reduced to this room, this bed, the slide of skin on skin and the ragged sound of their breathing. Ethan’s hands were everywhere, tracing the curve of her hip, the swell of her breast, the sensitive skin of her inner thigh. He touched her like he owned her, like he’d been waiting his whole life for this moment, and Lila reveled in it, in the way he seemed to know her body better than she knew herself.
He kissed his way down her throat, over her collarbone, lingering on her breasts until she was writhing beneath him, her fingers digging into his hair. His mouth was hot and wet on her skin, his tongue swirling around her nipple, sucking and licking until she cried out, her back arching off the bed. He moved lower, his lips tracing a path down her stomach, his tongue dipping into her navel, making her shiver and gasp.
“Ethan,” she breathed, her voice ragged with need. “Please.”
He looked up at her, his eyes dark and intense, a wicked smile playing on his lips. “Please what?” he murmured, his breath hot against her skin. “Tell me what you want, Lila.”
She swallowed hard, her cheeks flushing with heat. “You,” she whispered. “I want you. Inside me. Now.”
His smile widened, and he shifted up her body, settling himself between her thighs. She could feel him, hard and hot against her core, and she rocked her hips, seeking more friction, more pressure. He reached for the nightstand, fumbling in the drawer for a condom, and she took the opportunity to run her hands over his chest, her nails scraping lightly over his nipples, making him hiss in pleasure.
He sheathed himself quickly, his hands trembling with impatience, and then he was pushing inside her, filling her, stretching her with a slow, deliberate thrust that made her moan. He felt incredible, thick and hard and perfect, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, urging him to move.
Ethan didn’t need any more encouragement. He started to thrust, slow and deep at first, each movement deliberate and controlled. But as Lila met him stroke for stroke, her hips rising to meet his, her nails digging into his back, he lost himself in the rhythm, his pace quickening, his thrusts becoming harder, more urgent. The bed creaked beneath them, the headboard thumping against the wall, but neither of them cared. All that mattered was the feel of him inside her, the heat of his body, the desperate, breathless sounds of their coupling.
Lila could feel the pressure building inside her again, coiling tighter and tighter with each deep, powerful thrust. She clung to Ethan, her face buried in the curve of his neck, her teeth grazing his skin as she tried to anchor herself against the storm of sensation. He felt it too, she could tell, his breathing growing ragged, his thrusts becoming erratic, almost wild. He reached between them, his fingers finding her clit, circling and stroking in time with his movements, and she flew apart with a cry, her body shuddering beneath his as wave after wave of pleasure crashed over her.
Ethan followed her a moment later, his body stiffening above her, his head thrown back as he came with a guttural groan. He pulsed inside her, his release triggering another round of aftershocks in her own body, and they clung to each other, trembling and breathless, as the last ripples of pleasure faded away.
They stayed like that for a long moment, wrapped in each other’s arms, their skin slick with sweat, their hearts pounding in sync. The storm outside had faded to a distant murmur, the wind no longer howling but sighing against the window, as if exhausted by its own fury. Inside, the only sound was their ragged breathing, the occasional creak of the bed as they shifted closer, reluctant to break the intimate bubble they’d created.
Lila’s mind drifted as she lay there, her head pillowed on Ethan’s chest, his heartbeat a steady, comforting rhythm beneath her ear. She thought of the loneliness that had driven her to the mountains, the ghosts of past relationships that had sent her running from the city and the life she’d known. She thought of Ethan’s self-imposed isolation, the way he’d retreated from the world to lick his wounds and heal his soul. They were alike, in so many ways – both running, both hiding, both seeking something they couldn’t quite name.
But in this moment, in this bed, with the storm fading outside and the warmth of Ethan’s body seeping into her bones, Lila felt a flicker of hope, a sense of connection that went deeper than just the physical. It was fragile, this thing between them, born of desperation and loneliness and the raw, unvarnished need to feel something real, something true. She didn’t know what it meant, or where it would lead, but for now, in the quiet aftermath of their passion, it was enough. It was more than enough.
