Handholds Before Breakfast

Kendrick laughed—full and helpless enough that Marlon’s face lit at the result. It made the kitchen feel less like a place he maintained and more like somewhere a life might happen.

While butter hissed in the pan, Kendrick set down the phone. “Last night wasn’t casual for me.”

Marlon turned off the burner before answering. “It wasn’t casual for me either.”

“I don’t want to act like it was. I don’t want to see you only on Saturdays and pretend I am fine with that arrangement.”

“Oh, Professor.” Marlon stepped closer, careful even now. “I am terrible at casual. I want dinners and grocery lists and your extremely specific opinions about train schedules. I want to keep taking care of you when you ask me to.”

“I want that too.” Kendrick took his hand. “And I want you to stay.”

Marlon’s grin softened. “As your boyfriend?”

The word should have sent Kendrick into a detailed internal review. Instead, it settled cleanly into place.

“Yes,” he said. “As my boyfriend.”

At Hearthline, they arrived hand in hand.

Ravi looked from their joined hands to Kendrick’s face, then lifted their Route-and-Refuel card from the counter. “Finally. I was beginning to think I’d have to stage an intervention involving matching aprons.”

“You were already doing that,” Marlon said.

“Correct. But now it has romance behind it.”

Their final route was an easy overhang Marlon had selected with Kendrick’s knee in mind. Kendrick climbed steadily, chalk drying his palms, Marlon below him offering calm route notes that made him laugh halfway up.

“Left foot, Professor.”

“I see it.”

“I know. I enjoy being useful.”

Kendrick reached the final hold, then looked down at him. “You are my favorite coach.”

Marlon’s entire face opened. “And you are my favorite Professor.”

He said it with an openly adoring grin, no teasing shield left around it.

After the descent, Ravi pressed the sixth purple stamp onto their card. Six neat circles. Six Saturdays. A document Kendrick would normally file away, preserve, explain.

Instead, he tucked it into his wallet.

They served breakfast together—soft eggs, onion potatoes, cheddar, sourdough—while Hearthline filled with climbers and coffee cups. Marlon moved beside him with easy competence, passing plates, checking on people, remembering every preference. This time, Kendrick did not stand safely apart and admire him.

When Marlon reached for another stack of napkins, Kendrick caught his wrist.

“Come here.”

Marlon did.

Kendrick kissed him in front of the whole cooperative. It was not hurried, and it was not an accident. Ravi whooped loudly enough to rattle the serving spoons. Someone near the coffee station applauded.

Marlon smiled against Kendrick’s mouth.

The card had brought Kendrick to a handhold before breakfast. Marlon had given him the whole day.
