Interference Patterns

(recording starts)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Okay. Okay. Test. Test. One, two. Okay. It’s... it’s recording. Right. Um. So. This is... this is weird. Talking into a mic when there’s no one on the other end. No levels to check, no feedback to kill. Just... me. And this little red light.

(deep breath)

**GEMMA:** Right. So. Gemma Napoli. Sound engineer for The Static. Currently... somewhere outside Berlin. Tour bus. 3:17 AM. Can’t sleep. Shocking, I know. Who can’t sleep on a tour bus? Only everyone. Always.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** Been thinking. Lot of hours to think on these hauls. Between cities. Between soundchecks. Between... everything else. Figured... maybe talking into the void might help. Or at least pass the time. Maybe I’ll delete it all tomorrow. Probably will. But for now...

(pause)

**GEMMA:** Berlin. Tonight. Soundcheck. Olympia, or whatever they call it here. Big. Echoey before the bodies pack in. We were setting up the monitors. Nico... he was test-singing. Just running scales, warming up. But his voice... even just warming up, it does that thing. Fills the space. Changes the air pressure. Makes the hairs on your arms stand up. Always does that to me. Even after... how long now? Two years? Almost three?

(pause)

**GEMMA:** He walked over. To my board. Pretending to check the monitor mix. Which he never does. That’s my job. He knows that. But he does it. Stands too close. Under the pretense of leaning in to hear.

(soft laugh)

**GEMMA:** We’re not... we’re not stupid. The crew. The band. They suspect. Maybe. Probably. But it’s... it’s not spoken. This fragile thing we’ve got. This secret. Like a soap bubble. Pretty, but one touch...

(pause)

**GEMMA:** So, he leaned in. Close. Too close. His shoulder... almost touching mine. I could feel the heat of him. Smell that stupid sandalwood stuff he uses. And his hand... when he reached for the fader... his fingers brushed mine. Just for a second. An accident. Had to be. But...

(pause)

**GEMMA:** My whole hand tingled. Like I’d grabbed a live wire. Stupid. Ridiculous. We’re adults. Supposedly. But that... that tiny brush of skin on skin... it was... more than... well.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** He didn’t move his hand. Not right away. Just... let it rest there. Against mine. For three seconds. Four. An eternity. My heart... I swear, it was louder than the feedback I spent an hour killing earlier. And then... he pulled away. Casual. Like nothing happened. Went back to the mic. Started singing the opening lines of “Interference.” Like the world hadn’t just... tilted.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** And I just... stood there. At my board. Knuckles white where I was gripping the edge. Trying to breathe. Trying to remember how to adjust the damn EQ. Like nothing was wrong. Like I wasn’t... burning.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** This is insane. Completely insane. We’re on a sold-out tour. Headlining. Every show packed. Every eye on him. On them. And we’re... playing this game. Brushing fingers during soundcheck. Stolen looks across crowded rooms. It’s... exhausting. Exhilarating. Terrifying. All wrapped up together. A knot in my stomach that never quite untangles.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** Maybe... maybe that’s why I’m doing this. Talking to the void. To the recorder. Because I can’t talk to anyone else. Can’t tell Marta, can’t tell Gardner. Definitely can’t tell him. Not... not everything. Not the way it scares me sometimes. How much I want... more. More than stolen touches. More than secret smiles. More than this constant... hiding.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** But for now... this is it. This is what we have. This fragile, secret thing. This interference pattern. Where our two signals cross. Briefly. Beautifully. Before we have to pull apart again. Before the world tunes in. Before...

(pause)

**GEMMA:** Anyway. It’s late. Or early. Whatever. Should try to sleep. Big day tomorrow. Paris. Another city. Another stage. Another chance to... pretend. To be just the sound engineer. And him just the singer. No knots. No secrets. Just... the show.

(sigh)

**GEMMA:** Yeah. Right. Sleep. Okay. Recording off.

(recording stops)

(recording starts)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Okay. Back again. Still weird. But… maybe less weird. Or maybe I’m just more tired. Paris. Olympia. Backstage. Well… sort of backstage. More like… a cleaning supply closet. Glamorous, right?

(soft rustle of clothing)

**GEMMA:** Show was… intense. Sold out. Wall-to-wall bodies. Sound was good, though. Clean. Balanced. Even with the crowd noise bleeding through. Managed to keep Nico’s vocals crisp. Mostly. He was… on fire tonight. That thing he does… where he holds the last note of “Signal Fade” until you think his lungs will burst… he held it even longer tonight. Crowd went insane. As usual.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** After… the usual madness. Backslapping. Roadies packing gear. Management buzzing. Nico… he caught my eye. Across the Green Room. Just a look. But… I knew. Knew what it meant. That silent question. *Now?* And I just… nodded. Once. Quick. Before anyone saw.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** And now… here we are. Storage closet. Smells like bleach and… dust. And him. Mostly him. That leather jacket. The one he always wears offstage. Worn soft at the elbows. Smells like… him. Like warm skin and that stupid expensive cologne he pretends he doesn’t wear and… something else. Something uniquely Nico. Like old paper and… stage lights. If stage lights had a smell. Which they don’t. But… if they did.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** He’s leaning against the door. Or… what passes for a door. More like a flimsy partition. His head tilted back. Eyes closed. Like he’s just… breathing. For the first time all day. The low light from the single bare bulb overhead catches the sharp line of his jaw. The shadows under his eyes. He looks… tired. Beautiful. Always. But tired.

**NICO:** (voice very low, barely audible) …felt like they were breathing with me tonight. The crowd. Like one… huge lung.

**GEMMA:** (softly) They were. You had them. Every single one. In the palm of your hand. Like always.

**NICO:** (opens his eyes, looks at her) Not always. Not… not like when you’re at the board. When I know… you’re listening. Really listening. Not just… mixing.

**GEMMA:** It’s my job to listen. To mix. To make you sound… like you.

**NICO:** (small smile) You make me sound… better. You know that. You hear… the things I don’t even know I’m doing. The cracks. The breaths. The… spaces between the notes. You… fill them. Or… let them be. Whichever they need.

**GEMMA:** Someone’s been reading poetry again.

**NICO:** (chuckles softly) Shut up. You know what I mean.

**GEMMA:** (smiling) I do. And… thank you. I think.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** He pushes off the door. Takes a step towards me. The small space suddenly feels… smaller. Charged. Like the air before a thunderstorm.

**NICO:** Gem… I’m so tired of this.

**GEMMA:** Tired of… closets that smell like bleach?

**NICO:** (huffs a laugh) Yeah. That. And… everything else. The hiding. The… sneaking around. The feeling like I’m… betraying something. Someone. Everyone.

**GEMMA:** We talked about this. In Brussels. In that… freezing alley behind the venue. Remember? You said… we need to be careful. That it’s… complicated. The band. Management. The image.

**NICO:** I know what I said. But that was… then. This is… now. And now… it feels like I’m suffocating. Like this secret… is sitting on my chest. Every minute. Every day.

**GEMMA:** Nico…

**NICO:** (takes another step closer) I see you. Across the room. At soundcheck. And I can’t… I can’t just walk over. And kiss you. Like I want to. Like… like any normal person could do. I have to… calculate. Is Marta looking? Is Gardner nearby? Is management watching? It’s… exhausting, Gem.

**GEMMA:** I know. Believe me, I know. You think it’s easy for me? Watching all those girls scream for you? Throw themselves at you? Knowing I have to just… stand there? Silent? Like… like I’m made of stone?

**NICO:** (reaches out, brushes a stray lock of hair from her forehead) You’re not made of stone. You’re… fire. And light. And… the most solid thing in my world. The only thing that feels… real. Sometimes.

**GEMMA:** (leans into his touch, just slightly) Then… what do we do?

**NICO:** I don’t know. I just… I needed to say it. To you. Out loud. That… this is killing me. Slowly. This hiding. This pretending.

**GEMMA:** Me too.

**NICO:** I wish… I wish we could just… freeze time. Right here. In this smelly closet. Just… be us. For more than five stolen minutes.

**GEMMA:** Me too.

**NICO:** (leans in, rests his forehead against hers) Breathe with me. Just for a second.

**GEMMA:** (closes her eyes) Okay.

(pause – only their breathing is audible, slow and synchronized)

**GEMMA:** (softly) Your jacket… it smells like rain. From earlier.

**NICO:** (murmurs) You… you smell like… solder. And vanilla. And… home.

**GEMMA:** (small laugh) Solder? Really?

**NICO:** (smiling against her skin) Yeah. Really. It’s… comforting. Real.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** We should… we should get back. Before someone notices. Marta will be looking for you. For the… the meet and greet.
