Lantern-Lit Inventory
Sigrid feels the old instinct to use silence as a wall, to let another person invent its meaning and suffer under the invention. She has spent too long inside other people’s omissions to do that now.
“I can want you,” she says. “And still hate what you did.”
“You can.”
“I might tell you to stop.”
“I stop.”
“Ask me, even if you think you remember.”
“I will.”
Sigrid studies the blue veins at Asta’s wrist, the faint scar at the base of one thumb that was not there when they were younger, or perhaps was there and had escaped her notice among all the things she considered permanent.
“Do you still want this?” she asks.
“Yes.”
“What can you offer?”
“Tonight,” Asta says. “Attention. No argument with whatever you feel tomorrow.”
The answer lands without grandeur. It is enough.
Asta closes the drawer of spare cables, then takes the small speaker from her case and plugs it into the wall outlet beside the old map cabinet. She holds up her phone.
“Music?”
Sigrid considers the question with an absurd care.
“The old one.”
Asta selects Susanne Sundfør’s “The Brothel.” The first piano notes enter the room quietly, familiar from mornings in another version of their lives, when a ferry horn had sounded below the hill and Sigrid had pretended not to know what departure cost until the timetable forced her to know.
Asta turns back toward her.
“May I take off your coat?”
“Please.”
The coat is damp at the shoulders from snow. Asta eases it down Sigrid’s arms and folds it over the back of a chair, an old habit surviving intact: care for wool, care for paper, care for a thing after it has already been used. Her hands return to Sigrid’s sweater hem.
“This too?”
“Yes.”
Sigrid raises her arms. The sweater passes over her head, carrying static from the winter air. Beneath it she wears a thin gray shirt, stained near one cuff with rust from the afternoon’s work. Asta’s palm pauses at her waist, open and waiting.
“May I kiss you?”
“Yes.”
Asta puts one hand along Sigrid’s jaw and another at her hip. Their mouths meet with such restraint that Sigrid nearly laughs, not from amusement but from the strange difficulty of being handled as though she might vanish.
“Not like you are afraid of me,” she says.
“I am afraid of hurting you.”
“You already did that.”
Asta closes her eyes for one brief beat.
Sigrid touches her cheek. “Put your tongue in my mouth.”
Asta does.
The kiss changes. Sigrid feels the familiar intelligence of her, the way Asta waits for an answer and then follows it, no longer translating pauses into gentler language than they deserve. Sigrid opens for her, takes her lower lip between her teeth, then lets it go.
“Again,” she says.
Asta kisses her again, fuller this time, one hand settling at the small of Sigrid’s back. Sigrid reaches beneath Asta’s sweater and finds bare skin, cooler than hers, the curve of waist and rib. The body she remembers is here, yet not preserved for her; it has continued without her, gathered years, work, winters, illness, mistakes.
“Your turn,” Sigrid says.
Asta lifts her arms.
Sigrid removes the sweater slowly. Beneath it is a black bra, plain and worn at the straps. She unfastens it, and Asta’s breasts fall into her hands. There is no need to pretend surprise at their softness, or at the sudden rush of want that has nothing to do with pardon.
“Can I touch you?”
“Yes.”
Sigrid bends and puts her mouth around one nipple. Asta makes a low sound, then brings her hand to the back of Sigrid’s neck without directing her.
“More?” Sigrid asks.
“Yes. A little harder.”
She obeys. Asta’s fingers slide into Sigrid’s hair, then stop there, loose, not claiming. Sigrid mouths the other breast, feels Asta’s body tighten beneath her touch, and thinks of all the old methods they used to have for making a room private: a locked door, a ferry after midnight, a blanket pulled over bare feet. None of those methods protected them from themselves.
Asta unbuttons Sigrid’s shirt one button at a time.
“Tell me if you want me to stop.”
“I will.”
When the shirt falls open, Asta kisses the hollow beneath Sigrid’s collarbone, then the center of her chest. Her mouth moves lower. Sigrid unfastens Asta’s trousers, pushes them down over her hips. Soon their clothes lie in a neat pile beside the chair, boots paired beneath the radiator, underwear abandoned on the sleeping bag Asta has spread across the floor.
They stand naked in the former map room, surrounded by old coastlines and weather routes, by the failed ambition of a building that once believed every danger could be named over a radio frequency.
Desire has never been evidence of innocence. Sigrid knows that. Her body may remember Asta with ease; it does not erase the ledger.
“Lie down,” Asta says.
Sigrid does, lowering herself onto the sleeping bag. The wool blanket beneath it smells faintly of dust and detergent. Asta kneels beside her, then between her knees.
“Where do you want me?”
“Between my legs.”
“With my mouth?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me how.”
Sigrid looks at her. “No fingers inside me yet. Put your hand on my thigh. Use your mouth on my clit.”
Asta’s eyes remain on hers.
“Like that?”
“Like that.”
Asta places her palm high on Sigrid’s inner thigh, waits until Sigrid opens for her, then lowers her mouth. The first press is gentle enough to make Sigrid’s hips lift in impatience.
“More pressure,” she says.
Asta shifts closer. The pads of her fingers open Sigrid’s labia, and her tongue works directly over the swollen place Sigrid has named for her. There is nothing tentative in the contact now, only attention. Her mouth closes around Sigrid’s clitoris, soft but firm, then returns to the same steady rhythm.
“Yes,” Sigrid says. “Stay there.”
Asta stays.
The room narrows to the drag of Asta’s tongue, the pressure of her hand holding Sigrid open, the piano moving through its low mechanical pattern from the shelf. Sigrid’s thighs shake once, then again.
“Can I use a finger?” Asta asks.
“Not yet.”
“All right.”
“Keep doing that.”
Asta gives a small sound against her, one of agreement rather than question. She does not change the pressure. She does not hurry toward an ending for either of them. Sigrid feels pleasure gather low in her body, precise and insistent, a tightening that asks for nothing except continuation.
“Harder,” she says.
Asta obeys.
“Don’t move.”
“I’m here.”
The words undo something in her that is not forgiveness and does not need to be. Sigrid reaches down, catches one hand in the blanket, then lets it go. Her hips rise. Asta keeps her mouth where Sigrid has asked for it, her thumb pressing the inside of Sigrid’s thigh.
“I’m close,” Sigrid says.
“I know. Do you want me to keep going?”
“Yes. Don’t stop.”
Asta does not stop.
Sigrid comes with her name held behind her teeth, body tightening around the force of it, then releasing in brief, sharp pulses that leave her unable to make language for several seconds. Asta remains between her legs until the last of it eases, then rests her cheek against Sigrid’s thigh.
“Are you all right?” she asks.
“Yes.”
“Do you want water?”
“Not yet.”
Asta starts to rise, but Sigrid catches her wrist.
“Now you.”
Asta looks down at her.
“Only if you want.”
“I do.”
Sigrid sits up and guides her onto her back. The sleeping bag crinkles beneath them. Asta’s hair has come loose around her shoulders; her mouth is wet, her pupils wide.
“Tell me,” Sigrid says.
“With your hand.”
“Where?”
Asta takes Sigrid’s hand and places it over herself. “My clit first. Slow.”
“Can I touch you?”
“Yes.”
Sigrid begins with the heel of her palm against Asta’s vulva, then uses her thumb in small, measured circles. Asta’s knees open wider.
“More to the left,” she says.
Sigrid adjusts.
“That?”
“Yes.”
Asta’s hand closes around Sigrid’s forearm, not pulling, only keeping contact. Sigrid watches her face, the effort of restraint giving way piece by piece.
“Can I put a finger inside you?”
“Yes. One.”
Sigrid enters her slowly, feeling Asta’s body receive her. She keeps her thumb moving over Asta’s clitoris, steady as a dial being turned by degrees.
“Is that all right?”
“Yes. Stay.”
Asta’s hips begin to meet her hand.
“Another?” Sigrid asks.
“Yes. Now.”
Sigrid adds a second finger, careful with the change in pressure, then curls them when Asta asks her to. The sound Asta makes is open and immediate. Sigrid keeps the same pace, refuses the old urge to interpret, to decide what another person means before she has spoken.
“Don’t stop,” Asta says.
“I’m not stopping.”
Asta comes hard beneath her hand, thighs closing around Sigrid’s wrist, then loosening as she lets out a long breath and covers her eyes with one arm. Sigrid stays where she is until Asta moves her hand away herself.
