Low Gear, High Stakes
We drive the rest of the way in silence, the easy quiet between us a stark contrast to the strained tension of our first few hours on the road. The city skyline looms ahead, the tall buildings gleaming in the late afternoon sun. It’s a beautiful sight, but it feels almost anticlimactic after everything we’ve been through, after everything we’ve shared.
Brenna parks the car in front of the university, the building where I’m supposed to deliver the fossil samples. We sit there for a moment, neither of us moving to get out.
“So,” Brenna says finally, her voice rough and low. “This is it.”
“Yeah,” I agree, my own voice just as unsteady. “I guess it is.”
I reach into the back seat and grab the fossil case, my fingers brushing against the cool metal. The promise has been kept, the samples delivered safely to their destination. But it feels like a small thing now, compared to the journey we’ve shared, the distance we’ve bridged between us.
I turn to Brenna, my heart pounding in my chest. “What now?” I ask softly, the question hanging in the air between us.
She looks at me, her eyes dark and intense. “I don’t know,” she admits, her voice rough and low. “But I’m not ready for this to be over.”
I nod, my throat tight. “Me neither,” I whisper.
We sit there for a long moment, the air between us charged with unspoken promises, with the weight of all the things we’ve left unsaid. The city bustles around us, the sounds of traffic and conversation a distant hum in the background. But in the cramped space of the car, with Brenna’s hand resting warm and heavy on my thigh, it feels like we’re the only two people in the world.
“We’ll figure it out,” Brenna says finally, her voice soft and sure. “One mile marker at a time.”
I smile, my heart swelling in my chest. “Yeah,” I agree, my voice rough with emotion. “One mile marker at a time.”
We get out of the car, the fossil case heavy in my hand. Brenna walks beside me, her shoulder brushing against mine, a silent reminder of the connection we’ve forged. The promise has been kept, but another, unspoken one lingers in the air between us – the promise of what might come next, now that we’ve navigated not just the miles, but the distance between us.
