Renovation Rendezvous

The next few weeks blur into sawdust, spackle, and simmering tension. Our bet hangs over every interaction, a delicious promise of future chaos. We’re opposing weather fronts colliding—I’m a vibrant hurricane; Sasha, a calm high-pressure system smoothing my edges.

The show forces constant proximity. We share tools and Chip Falcon’s delight in our drama. “Sasha, Perry,” he booms one morning by the kitchen island. “How’s the pressure treating you?”

Sasha offers a tight smile. “I thrive under pressure. Precision and planning.” They shoot me a pointed look. “Unlike some people who mix all the colors together.”

I snort. “Where’s the fun in safe? Let the wild colors run free.”

“Living a little caused the Great Wallpaper Debacle,” Chip interjects. “And Perry’s plumbing innovation created an indoor water feature.”

“It was an artistic choice!” I protest, though the impromptu fountain had been excessive.

Chip laughs. “This is why Renovation Rendezvous is must-see TV!” He wanders off, leaving us alone. The air hums with clashes and near-misses.

“You know,” Sasha says quietly, “this bickering wastes energy.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Worried about energy conservation? What’s next, my carbon footprint?”

They sigh. “Maybe a temporary truce? To finish without flooding rooms?”

I study their exhausted eyes and disheveled hair. “Okay. Truce. If you admit my reclaimed wood wall was genius.”

Sasha’s lips twitch. “It was structurally questionable… but had rustic charm.”

“I’ll take it,” I grin. We return to work, the silence now tentative rather than hostile.

But the universe disrupts our peace. I’m touching up trim when I notice the paint seems off. “Hey, Sasha, did you mess with my paint?”

They look up. “Don’t be ridiculous. It’s probably the lighting.” But as I dip my brush, the color shifts to greenish-brown. “What the hell?”

Sasha examines the can. “That’s the guest bathroom paint code.”

“Fuck!” I stumble, knocking over the can. Paint splatters across the floors. Sasha grabs a rag but slips, crashing into my ladder. It topples, leaving a hole in the drywall.

We freeze, staring at the carnage. Then laughter bubbles in my throat. It’s absurd, ridiculous, so perfectly us.

Sasha turns to me, aghast, but my mirth infects them. They laugh too—a warm, genuine sound that lightens my chest.

“You’re a menace,” they gasp.

“And you’re a bad influence,” I counter.

We slump shoulder to shoulder. The air shifts, charged with something new. My skin tingles where Sasha’s arm brushes mine.

“We should clean this up,” they say, voice rough with laughter.

“We should,” I agree, unmoving.

“Perry,” Sasha says quietly. My name on their lips sends a shiver down my spine.

“Yeah?”

“This tension… it’s distracting.” Their eyes hold vulnerability. “Distracting in a way that makes me want to do unprofessional things.”

My heart kicks. “Unprofessional things, huh? Like what?”

Their eyes drop to my mouth. “Like kissing you. Right here.”

The world narrows to their proximity. “I want that too. But the competition… the bet…”

Sasha nods. “I know. It’s a terrible idea.” They take a shuddering breath. “No unprofessional things. Not until after.”

I nod. “Agreed. Strictly professional. No kissing. No anything else.”

“Strictly professional,” Sasha echoes. They stand, moving away with a slight tremor. I watch them go, heart pounding. This renovation isn’t just about winning anymore. It’s about something far more dangerous.

And I have no idea how I’m going to survive it.

The season finale arrives with fanfare. Spotlights crisscross the studio. A live audience buzzes. Chip Falcon, in a sequined blazer, bares impossibly white teeth.

“Welcome to the Renovation Rendezvous finale! Tonight, we crown our champion. Will it be Perry’s bold designs? Or Sasha’s clean precision?”

The audience whoops. My palms slick with sweat. Sasha stands beside me, cool composure masking their trembling pulse.

The lights dim. A drumroll rattles my ribs. Chip tears open the gold envelope.

“And the winner is…”

A suspended beat. The air crackles.

“Sasha!”

The crowd erupts. Confetti cannons boom. Sasha turns to me, eyes wide, stunned. For a heartbeat, the world falls away. There’s only Sasha, their hazel eyes searching mine.

Then Chip is between us, thrusting a microphone at Sasha. “How does it feel? You’ve won the chance to redecorate Perry’s apartment!”

Sasha blinks, remembering where they are. They take the mic, voice steady. “It feels… unexpected. Perry’s designs are brilliant. Bold. They push boundaries.” Their gaze locks with mine. “But if I’m honest, this competition taught me about taking risks. About letting go. About following your heart.”

My own heart stutters. What are they doing?

“Perry,” Sasha says, turning to face me fully. “I don’t want to redecorate your apartment. I don’t want to change a single thing about you. You’re vibrant. Unpredictable. And I…” They swallow hard. “I think I’m in love with you.”

The audience gasps. Cameras swivel. My throat tightens.

“Sasha,” I rasp.

They step closer, the mic forgotten. “I know we agreed. Strictly professional. But life’s too short. I want messy. I want complicated. I want… you.”

I close the distance between us. My hands find their face, paint-stained thumbs brushing tears. “Took you long enough,” I murmur.

I kiss them. A deep, hungry kiss. The audience erupts. Chip Falcon looks ecstatic. Sasha’s arms wrap around me.

Later, outside the studio, hands entwined, city lights paint Sasha’s face in gold and amber.

“So,” I say. “What now, Beige Ranger?”

Sasha smiles, lighter. “Now, we start something new. Together.”

“Bold Designs by Sasha and Perry?” I suggest.

They laugh. “How about… Kaleidoscope Renovations?”

I grin. “I like it. Chaotic. Colorful. Full of surprises.”

“Just like us,” Sasha agrees.

As we walk into the neon-kissed night, I know this is just the beginning.
