Silver Lining Playbook
I tugged at his t-shirt, desperate to feel his skin against mine. He yanked it off one-handed, revealing the lean muscles I’d once known by heart. Time had only improved him, adding definition to his chest and arms.
We came together in a tangle of limbs, mouths fused in a kiss that tasted like regret and redemption. Eli’s hands slid down my back, cupping my ass and lifting me against him. I wrapped my legs around his waist, grinding against the hard length of him through his jeans.
“Bedroom,” he rasped against my lips. “Now.”
I nodded frantically, my hands already fumbling with the button of his jeans. He carried me effortlessly through the wreckage of the suite, kicking aside a fallen lamp and scattering empty beer cans with his bare feet.
The bedroom was marginally less trashed, the king-sized bed a welcome oasis in the chaos. Eli set me down on the edge of the mattress, his hands going to the button of my jeans. I lifted my hips, letting him peel the denim down my legs.
“Fuck, Riley,” he groaned, his eyes raking over my nearly naked body. “Do you have any idea how many times I’ve fantasized about this? About having you in my bed again?”
“Probably as many times as I’ve thought about it,” I admitted breathlessly, reaching for him. “Eli, please…”
He didn’t need to be told twice. His jeans and boxers hit the floor, and then he was on me, his weight pressing me into the mattress as his mouth claimed mine in another searing kiss.
We lost ourselves in the feel of each other, hands roaming, teeth nipping, tongues tangling. It was messy and frantic and utterly perfect, a homecoming five years in the making.
“Eli,” I gasped, my nails digging into his shoulders as he kissed his way down my throat. “I need you inside me. Now.”
He groaned, his hips bucking against mine. “Condom,” he rasped, already reaching for the nightstand. “We need a condom.”
I wanted to tell him not to bother, that I trusted him, that I’d dreamed of feeling him bare inside me. But sanity prevailed, and I nodded, my body trembling with anticipation as he rolled the latex down his impressive length.
He settled between my thighs, his eyes locking with mine as he guided himself to my entrance. “Riley,” he breathed, his voice raw with emotion. “I love you. I never stopped.”
“I love you too,” I whispered, my heart in my throat. “Always.”
With a groan that seemed to come from the very depths of his soul, he thrust forward, filling me in one smooth, perfect stroke. We both cried out at the sensation, our bodies remembering what our hearts had never forgotten.
Eli set a punishing pace, his hips snapping against mine with a ferocity that bordered on desperation. I met him thrust for thrust, my legs wrapped tight around his waist as I pulled him deeper with every stroke.
“Fuck, Riley,” he growled, his forehead pressed to mine. “You feel so good. So fucking perfect.”
I could only moan in response, my nails raking down his back as I arched into him. He felt incredible inside me, the perfect blend of pleasure and pain as he stretched me to my limits.
We moved together like we’d never been apart, our bodies falling back into the familiar rhythm of love and lust. The world fell away until there was nothing but the two of us, the creak of the mattress, and the moonlight streaming through the window, bathing us in its silvery glow.
“Eli,” I gasped, my body coiling tighter with every thrust. “I’m close. So close.”
“Come for me, baby,” he urged, his hand slipping between us to circle my clit with his thumb. “Let me feel you come on my cock.”
That was all it took. My body shattered around him, wave after wave of pleasure crashing over me as I screamed his name to the heavens. Eli followed me over the edge a moment later, his body shuddering against mine as he found his release deep inside me.
We collapsed together in a sweaty, panting tangle of limbs, our hearts racing in sync as we slowly drifted back to earth. Eli pulled me close, his lips brushing my temple in a tender kiss.
“Thank you,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “For giving us another chance.”
I snuggled deeper into his embrace, my head resting on his chest. “Always,” I murmured, the word a promise and a prayer. “I’ll always choose you, Eli. Always.”
As we lay there, wrapped in each other and the soft moonlight, I knew that whatever came next, we’d face it together. The past was behind us, and the future stretched out before us, bright and full of possibility.
For the first time in five years, I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be. Home.
I woke to the sound of my own heartbeat, slow and steady against Eli’s chest. The moon had long since dipped below the horizon, replaced by the first pale fingers of dawn creeping across the room.
Eli stirred beside me, his arm tightening around my waist. “Morning, beautiful,” he murmured, his voice rough with sleep.
I smiled, burrowing deeper into his embrace. “Morning.”
We lay in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching the sky outside the window brighten from indigo to gold. The city was beginning to wake, the distant sounds of traffic drifting up to our little oasis.
“I should go,” I said finally, reluctant to break the spell but knowing the real world wouldn’t wait forever. “My editor’s expecting that interview by noon.”
Eli groaned, pulling me closer. “Do you have to? Can’t you tell him you got kidnapped by a rockstar?”
I laughed, swatting at his chest. “Tempting. But I kind of like my job.”
“Fine,” he grumbled, releasing me with a sigh. “But only if you promise to come back tonight.”
“Deal,” I said, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before sliding out of bed.
We dressed in comfortable silence, the awkwardness of the night before replaced by a newfound ease between us. Eli found my scattered clothes, handing them to me with a playful grin. “Next time, maybe we can do this in a slightly less destroyed room?”
I snorted, pulling on my jeans. “Where’s the fun in that?”
He crossed to the window, his gaze distant as he took in the sunrise. “Riley, about last night…”
I paused, my heart skipping a beat. “Yeah?”
He turned to face me, his expression serious. “I meant what I said. I want this. I want us. But I know it won’t be easy, with the tour and the media and… everything.”
I nodded, my stomach fluttering with nerves. “I know. It’s a lot.”
“But I’m willing to try,” he said softly, closing the distance between us. “If you are.”
“Of course I am,” I said, my throat tight. “Eli, I lo—”
He cut me off with a kiss, his lips soft and sweet against mine. “I know,” he murmured when we broke apart. “Me too.”
We finished dressing in a more somber mood, the weight of reality settling over us. In the light of day, the challenges ahead seemed daunting, the path forward uncertain.
But as I gathered my things and prepared to leave, Eli took my hand, his grip strong and sure. “We’ll figure it out, Riley,” he said, his eyes filled with a quiet determination. “One day at a time.”
I squeezed his hand, drawing strength from his touch. “One day at a time,” I echoed.
He walked me to the door, his arm around my waist. “I’ll call you after soundcheck,” he promised, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “And Riley? Thank you. For last night. For… everything.”
“Thank you,” I whispered, rising up on my toes to kiss him one last time. “For my second chance.”
With a final, lingering look, I stepped out into the hallway, the door closing softly behind me. I made my way to the elevator in a daze, my mind spinning with the events of the past twelve hours.
As I rode down to the lobby, I pulled out my phone, my fingers hovering over my editor’s number. I knew what I had to do.
“Johnson,” my boss answered on the first ring. “You’re up early. Please tell me you got the interview.”
“I did,” I said, my voice steady despite the butterflies in my stomach. “But there’s been a slight change of plans.”
A pause. “What kind of change?”
“I’m not writing the piece,” I said, the words tasting like freedom. “Consider this my notice.”
“What?” Johnson sputtered. “You can’t be serious. Riley, think about what you’re doing!”
“I have,” I said, a smile spreading across my face. “And I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”
I ended the call, dropping my phone back into my bag with a sense of finality. For the first time in years, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
Stepping out into the crisp morning air, I tilted my face up to the sun, a newfound lightness in my step. The city bustled around me, full of promise and possibility.
I didn’t know what the future held for Eli and me. I didn’t know if we’d be able to make it work, with the whole world watching and waiting for us to fail.
But I knew that whatever came next, we’d face it together. The past was behind us, and the future stretched out before us, bright and full of second chances.
And really, what more could a girl ask for?
