Midnight Swim

The city breathes below me, a distant hum of sirens and laughter, but up here on the rooftop pool, the world is water and moonlight. I set up my camera on its tripod, the little red light blinking like a heartbeat. The pool is liquid mercury under the security lights, shimmering with the promise of immersion. I adjust the angle, making sure it captures the whole length of the pool, the way the water will catch the light when I dive. This is my stage, my sanctuary.

My high-cut red swimsuit clings to my body as I step to the edge, the air cool against my skin. The water-themed sleeve tattoo wrapping my left arm seems to ripple in anticipation. I take a deep breath, inhaling the chlorine and the faint, warm scent of Byredo's Bal d'Afrique I dabbed on my pulse points earlier. Then, I dive.

The water parts for me like a lover's embrace, cool and silken against my skin. I push off from the wall, my body slicing through the water in slow, deliberate strokes. My movements are languid, unhurried, each kick a deliberate caress of the water. I roll onto my back, floating, letting the city lights paint patterns on my wet skin. The camera sees everything—the way a droplet clings to my eyelash, the ripple of muscle beneath my suit as I twist underwater, the slow-motion ballet of my limbs.

On my laptop screen, the chat scrolls rapidly.

*"God, the way the water moves around you..."*

*"That tattoo is everything."*

*"I could watch this forever."*

Their words wash over me like the water, a chorus of admiration and desire. I smile, letting their gaze fuel my movements. I dive deep, skimming the tiled bottom, then surge upwards, breaking the surface in a spray of diamonds. Water streams from my short-cropped dark hair, down my neck, between my shoulder blades. I run my hands over my body, tracing the lines of muscle, the curve of my hip, the way the suit rides up when I kick.

I'm a creature of the water, and they're all watching.

A flutter in my belly, warm and electric. I love being seen like this—adored, desired, but from a distance. Safe. The chat keeps scrolling, a waterfall of words.

*"You're so fluid, like water itself."*

*"That suit... damn."*

*"Wish I could be there."*

I perform for them, each stroke a gift, each ripple a promise. The night is young, the pool is mine, and the clock hasn't started ticking yet. But I know it will. Soon. For now, I swim, and I let them watch.

I dive again, deeper this time, savoring the muffled silence beneath the surface, the weightlessness. When I emerge, I swim to the shallow end, standing to let the water stream off my body. I run my hands through my hair, slicking it back, knowing how the camera loves the way the light catches the water on my skin. I trace the lines of my tattoo, the blues and greens swirling like the pool itself, and smile at the camera, slow and languid. The chat explodes.

*"That smile should be illegal."*

*"God, I wish I could touch you."*

*"You're a work of art."*

Their words fuel me, a low thrum of energy under my skin. I dive backward, arching my body, letting the water embrace me again. I swim underwater for a few strokes, my body a pale shape beneath the surface, then roll onto my back, floating, eyes closed, letting the city lights paint patterns on my eyelids. The night air is cool on my wet skin, a delicious contrast to the water's embrace. I know the camera is capturing every droplet, every ripple, every slow, sensual movement. This is my gift to them, this performance, this intimacy at a distance. The chat keeps scrolling, a river of desire, and I let it carry me, stroke by languid stroke, through the liquid mercury night.

But one viewer stands out. A username I've seen before, Kai, with a profile picture that's just a close-up of a green eye, sharp and focused. They don't type much in the chat, but their presence is constant, a steady heartbeat in the stream of words. I click on their username, my curiosity piqued. A private chat window opens.

*"You're back again,"* I type, my fingers hovering over the keys, a flutter of anticipation in my belly.

*"I can't stay away,"* comes the reply, almost instantly. *"Your show is the highlight of my night."*

*"Is that so?"* I smile, typing the words, imagining their face, the way their eyes might crinkle at the corners when they read my message.

*"It is,"* they write. *"There's something about the way you move in the water... it's mesmerizing."*

I lean back against the edge of the pool, the cool tile a contrast to the warm water lapping at my skin. *"I'm glad you enjoy it,"* I reply, my fingers tapping out the words. *"It's bittersweet, though. The building's closing for renovations soon. This might be one of my last shows."*

*"I know,"* comes the reply, a beat of silence hanging between the words. *"I saw the notice. It's a shame. This rooftop is special."*

*"It is,"* I agree, my eyes drifting to the city skyline, the way the lights shimmer on the water. *"I wanted to make these last shows memorable. Something to remember this place by."*

*"I have an idea,"* Kai writes, the words appearing slowly, deliberately. *"What if I came to see you? In person. Before it's too late."*

My breath catches in my throat, a sudden, sharp intake of air. The idea is tantalizing, dangerous. *"You want to come here?"* I type, my fingers trembling slightly. *"To the pool?"*

*"Yes,"* comes the reply, simple and direct. *"I want to see you swim, up close. I want to experience your show in person, before this place is gone forever."*

I bite my lip, considering. It's a risk, inviting a stranger into my sanctuary. But something about Kai feels different. Safe. Their words are respectful, admiring, without the pushy insistence of some of the other viewers.

*"Okay,"* I type, the word feeling like a leap into deep water. *"But only you. And only for the last night."*

*"Just me,"* Kai replies, the words a promise. *"And only if you're comfortable. I don't want to push."*

*"I'm comfortable,"* I write, and it's true. The idea sends a thrill through me, a current of electricity beneath my skin. *"Meet me here, on the last night. Midnight. The security guard owes me a favor. He'll let you up."*

*"I'll be there,"* Kai writes, the words a vow. *"I can't wait to see you in person. To see the way the water moves around you, up close."*

I smile, a slow, secret curve of my lips. *"I'll give you a show you'll never forget,"* I promise, my fingers flying over the keys. *"A final performance, just for you."*

*"I have no doubt,"* comes the reply, and I can almost hear the smile in the words. *"Until then, River. Keep swimming. I'll be watching."*

I close the private chat window, a new kind of energy humming beneath my skin. The public chat is still scrolling, a chorus of desire and admiration, but now it feels different. More personal. Like every word is a prelude to something deeper, something real.

I dive back into the water, the cool embrace washing over me, and I swim with renewed purpose, my movements infused with a new kind of anticipation. The clock is ticking, the final night looming, but now it feels like a beginning, not an end.
