“They know,” I choked out, my voice raw. “Someone leaked footage. Of us. On the stairs.”

A beat of silence stretched between us, taut and terrible. Then Pavel swore, low and vicious. “Where?”

“Everywhere,” I whispered. “Pavel, what do we do?”

“I’m coming over,” he said, his voice tight. “Don’t move. Don’t talk to anyone. I’ll be there in ten.”

He made it in seven, bursting into my loft with wild eyes and tousled hair, as if he’d run the whole way. For a long moment, we just stared at each other across the room, our blunder looming large between us.

“We have to get ahead of this,” Pavel said finally, pacing the length of the room like a caged animal. “Spin it. Say it was… method acting. Performance art. Something.”

“Be serious,” I snapped, my nerves frayed to breaking point. “This isn’t some gallery stunt, Pavel. This is our lives. Our careers.”

“And what do you suggest?” he shot back, whirling to face me. “Go public? Admit we’ve been faking this whole thing? That’ll do wonders for your firm’s credibility.”

“And what about yours?” I demanded. “You think galleries will be lining up to show your work when they find out you’ve been using me for publicity?”

He flinched, the barb hitting home. “Is that what you think this was? Just a career move?”

“Wasn’t it?” I challenged, my voice rising. “Rule one, Pavel. No feelings. Just business. Remember?”

“Fuck the rules,” he growled, closing the distance between us in two strides. “Those rules went out the window the second I kissed you. The second I realized I didn’t want to fake it anymore.”

I sucked in a sharp breath, the raw honesty in his words stripping me bare. “Pavel…”

“No. Let me say this.” He reached for me, his hands framing my face, his touch gentle but unyielding. “I love you, Vesna Rossi. I’ve been in love with you for years. Since grad school. Since before I even knew what to call it. This fake dating scheme… it was just an excuse. A way to be close to you without having to admit how terrified I was that you’d never see me as anything more than your friend.”

I stared at him, stunned into silence. All this time. All those Thursday nights, all those almost-kisses and loaded glances. He’d been hiding this. We’d both been hiding.

“Say something,” he whispered, his thumbs brushing over my cheekbones. “Please.”

“I’m scared too,” I admitted, my voice trembling. “Scared of ruining what we have. Scared of losing my best friend. Scared that this… that we… won’t work outside of the spotlight.”

“It’s already working,” he insisted, pulling me closer, his forehead pressing against mine. “It’s been working. We’ve been building something real, Ves. Something that’s ours. Not for the cameras. Not for our careers. For us.”

I closed my eyes, letting his words wash over me, feeling the truth of them settle deep in my bones. He was right. We’d been dancing around this for weeks, maybe even years. The chemistry between us wasn’t just for show. It was the realest thing I’d ever felt.

“We can’t hide out here forever,” I said finally, pulling back just enough to look up at him. “The world already thinks they know our secrets. We need to decide what we’re going to tell them.”

Pavel’s gaze was steady on mine, unwavering. “We tell them the truth. As much of it as we want to share. That we’re together. For real this time. No more rules. No more pretending.”

I took a deep, shuddering breath, the last of my defenses crumbling. "Okay," I said, a grin twitching at the edges of my mouth. “No more pretending.”

He kissed me then, slow and deep, a promise sealed without words. When we broke apart, breathless and a little dazed, I knew there was no going back. We were in this together now, for better or worse.

“Come on,” I said, taking his hand and leading him toward the fire escape. “We need air. And a plan.”

We climbed out onto the narrow landing, the city sprawling below us like a circuit board of light and shadow. The night air was cool and crisp, a welcome counterpoint to the emotional storm we’d just weathered inside.

“So,” Pavel said, lacing his fingers through mine as we leaned against the railing. “How do we do this? How do we tell the world we’re not faking it anymore?”

I looked out at the glittering skyline, a calm settling over me for the first time in days. “We just… be real,” I said softly. “We show up. Together. Not for the cameras. Not for the press. For us. We let them see what they want to see. And we know the truth.”

He squeezed my hand, a silent affirmation. “And the gala next week? The industry event?”

I turned to face him, a real smile blooming on my face. “We walk in together. As a real couple. And we let the chips fall where they may.”

“Sounds perfect,” he murmured, pulling me into his arms. “As long as I’m falling with you.”

We stayed there for a long time, tangled together on the fire escape, the city bearing silent witness to the shift between us. The rules were gone, the facade crumbling to dust at our feet. All that remained was us – real, raw, and terrifyingly alive. And for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t afraid to reach for it.

The gala was a crush of sequins and ambition, the city’s elite gathered to celebrate the unveiling of a new museum wing. Pavel and I paused at the top of the sweeping staircase leading down into the ballroom, the glittering crowd spread beneath us like a living mosaic. I could feel the curious stares, the whispered speculation that had followed us since the video leaked. We’d spent the week hunkered down, weathering the storm of tabloid headlines and industry gossip, but tonight… tonight we’d face it head-on. Together.

“You ready for this?” Pavel murmured, his hand warm and steady at the small of my back. He looked devastating in his tux, his dark hair tousled just so, a smile playing on his lips that was equal parts mischief and reassurance.

I took a deep breath, the silk of my emerald gown cool against my skin. “As ready as I’ll ever be,” I said, turning to look up at him. “No more hiding. No more pretending. Just us.”

His smile widened, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Just us,” he echoed, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me. “I like the sound of that.”

We descended the stairs side by side, our steps in sync, his hand never leaving my back. The room seemed to hold its breath as we made our entrance, the murmur of conversation dipping for a moment before swelling back up, louder now, charged with fresh speculation. I caught snippets as we passed – “There they are!” “Did you see the video?” “Do you think it’s real this time?” – but I kept my chin high, my gaze fixed ahead, Pavel’s presence a steady anchor beside me.

At the bottom of the stairs, a photographer stepped into our path, his camera already flashing. “Vesna! Pavel! Can we get a shot of the happy couple?”

Pavel didn’t miss a beat. He turned to me, his hand sliding around my waist to pull me close, his smile bright and unapologetic. “I think you can,” he said, his gaze locking on mine, warm and full of promise. “After all, we’ve got nothing to hide anymore.”

I leaned into him, my body molding to his as the camera flashed again, capturing the truth of us in a single, unguarded moment. The picture would be everywhere by morning – Vesna Rossi and Pavel Chen, no longer faking, finally real.

The rest of the night passed in a blur of champagne and congratulations, handshakes and air-kisses. We moved through the crowd together, a united front, our earlier tension replaced by an easy, wordless understanding. Pavel introduced me to gallery owners with a proprietary pride that made my heart flutter, while I proudly showed him off to potential clients, watching the way their eyes widened at his latest photographs displayed on the museum walls.

“Looks like our little stunt worked,” Pavel teased as we stepped onto the terrace for a breather, the city lights twinkling below. “You’re the belle of the ball, Rossi. Everyone wants a piece of you.”

I laughed, the sound light and genuine. “And you, Chen. I saw the way that collector was eyeing you. I think she wants to put you in her permanent collection.”

He snorted, pulling me into his arms. “She’ll have to fight me for you,” he murmured, his lips grazing my temple. “I’m not sharing.”
