Sunrise Over Cedar Ridge

I take her hand, allowing her to pull me to my feet, and follow her out of the bedroom and through the quiet apartment. We grab a thick, soft blanket from the back of her couch on our way out, wrapping it around our shoulders as we step out onto the porch.

The air is crisp and cool, the sky above us a soft, pale pink that deepens to a rich orange at the horizon. We can hear the first stirrings of the birds in the trees around us, their songs rising to greet the new day.

We settle onto the porch swing, the blanket wrapped tight around us, our bodies pressed close together for warmth. I sling an arm around Maya’s shoulders, pulling her into the curve of my body, and she rests her head against my chest with a contented sigh.

For a long moment, neither of us speaks, content to simply sit in the quiet of the morning, watching as the sun begins to peek above the horizon. It’s a breathtaking sight, the sky awash in shades of pink and orange and gold, the light casting a warm, golden glow over everything it touches.

As the sun rises higher, painting the world in hues of light and color, I feel a sense of peace settle over me, deep and abiding. It’s not just the beauty of the sunrise, though that’s certainly part of it. It’s the feeling of Maya in my arms, the warmth of her body against mine, the knowledge that she’s here, with me, in this moment.

I press a kiss to the top of her head, breathing in the sweet, floral scent of her hair. “Thank you,” I murmur, my voice rough with emotion. “For this. For... for everything.”

She tilts her head back to look up at me, her eyes soft and warm. “Thank you,” she whispers back, her hand coming up to rest on my cheek. “For seeing me. For being here.”

I turn my head to press a kiss into her palm, my eyes never leaving hers. “Always,” I promise, my voice a low rumble in the quiet of the morning. “I’ll always be here, Maya. For as long as you’ll have me.”

She smiles then, a bright, radiant expression that lights up her whole face. “I’ll hold you to that,” she says, her tone playful, but her eyes serious, full of promise.

I smile back, my heart full to bursting with the weight of the emotion between us. And as we sit there together, wrapped in each other’s arms, watching the sun rise over Cedar Ridge, I know that this is just the beginning of something beautiful, something real.

Something that will last.
