Tango Uniform Tango

She nodded, following close as I led the way. We slid into the ditch, pressing close against the damp earth. The sounds of battle raged around us, the acrid scent of smoke and gunpowder thick in the air. *Just like downrange. Except she’s here. With me.*

I glanced at Vica, the sight of her in combat gear hitting me like a punch to the gut. *She’s so damn beautiful. Even covered in dirt and sweat.* I reached out, brushing a smudge of dirt from her cheek. “You okay?”

She nodded, her breath coming fast. “I’m fine. Just... focused on the mission.” She held my gaze, something shifting in her eyes. *There it is. The connection we’ve been dancing around.*

“Vica, about last night—” I started, but she cut me off, her finger pressing to my lips.

“Not now, Roland.” Her voice was soft, almost lost in the chaos around us. “Later. When this is over.” She leaned in, her forehead pressing to mine. “Just... stay with me. Please.”

*Always.* I wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close. “I’m not going anywhere, Vica. I promise.” *This time, I mean it.*

We huddled together, the battle raging overhead. The minutes stretched, each second feeling like an eternity. *Just hold on. Stay focused.* I kept my rifle ready, my senses trained on the world beyond our fragile shelter.

“They’re falling back!” The shout came over the comms, followed by a chorus of celebratory whoops. *It’s over. We did it.*

I sagged against the ditch, relief washing over me. *We made it. She’s safe.* I turned to Vica, my heart in my throat. “Vica, I—”

“Captain Pellecchia!” The colonel’s voice crackled over the headset. “Report to the command center immediately. Debrief in ten.”

*Shit.* I met Vica’s gaze, the moment shattered. “Duty calls.” I pushed myself up, offering her a hand. “Come on. Let’s get you out of here.”

She took my hand, letting me pull her to her feet. We jogged back toward the command center without speaking, everything unsaid pulling at the air between us. *Later. We’ll talk later.* I clung to the thought, the promise of what might be. *Don’t screw this up, Roland. Not again.*

The debrief was a blur of maps and reports, the colonel’s voice droning in my ear. I nodded in the right places, answered the questions put to me, but my mind was elsewhere. *With her.* I found myself searching for her in the crowded room, catching glimpses of auburn hair through the sea of uniforms.

When the debrief finally ended, I made my way to the comms room, my heart pounding. *This is it. No more running.* I pushed open the door—and froze.

The room was empty. Servers hummed in the silence, the only sign of life the blinking lights on the racks. *She’s gone.* Disappointment crashed over me, cold and heavy. *What did you expect, Roland? A warm welcome?*

I turned to leave—and spotted it. A folded piece of paper tucked under my keyboard. *My name.* I recognized her handwriting, the neat, precise script I’d know anywhere. I picked it up, unfolding it with trembling hands.

“Meet me. The old spot. Sunset.” *The old spot.* The lake where we’d spent so many nights, talking and dreaming under the stars. *She remembers.*

I checked my watch, my pulse racing. *Almost sunset.* I took off at a jog, hope blooming in my chest for the first time in years. *This is it. Our second chance.* The words repeated in my thoughts as I ran, the last sunlight coloring the sky gold and pink. *Don’t be late, Roland. Not this time.*

The lake shimmered in the dying light, the water painted in hues of orange and pink. I slowed to a walk, my breath snagging in my throat. *There.* She stood by the water’s edge, her silhouette framed against the sunset. My heart hammered against my ribs. *This is it.*

I approached slowly, gravel crunching under my boots. She turned at the sound, her green eyes wide. “Roland. You came.”

*As if I could stay away.* I stopped an arm’s length from her, drinking in the sight of her. “You asked. I’m here.” I gulped, hunting for the words. “Vica, about last night... about everything...” I trailed off, uncertainty tangling my thoughts. *Just say it, damn it.*

She stepped closer, her hand reaching for mine. “I’m sorry, Roland. For leaving. For not answering your emails.” Her voice was soft, raw with emotion. “I was scared. Scared of losing you. Scared of loving a Marine.” She met my gaze, her eyes glistening with contained tears. “But seeing you out there today, the way you protected me...” She inhaled a trembling breath. “I realized something. I never stopped loving you, Roland. Not for a moment.”

Her words hit me like a shot to the chest, stealing my breath. *She loves me. Still.* I closed the distance between us, my hands framing her face. “Vica...” My voice fractured, the burden of the past nine months crashing over me. “I thought I’d lost you. When you left, when you didn’t answer...” I rested my forehead against hers, my thumbs brushing her cheeks. “I was a fool. I should have fought for you. For us.”

She turned her face into my touch, her breath heating my palm. “We both made mistakes. But we’re here now.” She leaned back, her green eyes searching mine. “I want to try again, Roland. If you do.”

*If I do?* A laugh escaped me, rough with emotion. “Vica, I never stopped wanting to try.” I pulled her close, my arms wrapping around her. “I love you. I always have. And I’ll spend the rest of my life proving it to you, if you’ll let me.”

She smiled then, the first real smile I’d seen from her since I’d returned. “I’m not going anywhere, Roland. Not this time.” She stretched up on her toes, her lips a breath from mine. “Kiss me, Marine. It’s been too long.”

I closed the distance, my mouth claiming hers in a kiss that seared through me, nine months of longing poured into a single touch. She melted against me, her arms winding around my neck, her body fitting to mine like she was made for me. *She is. She always was.*

We stood there, lost in each other as the sun dipped below the horizon, the world fading to twilight around us. *Home.* The word echoed in my thoughts, warm and certain. *She’s my home. And this time, I’m not letting go.*

I broke the kiss slowly, resting my forehead against hers. “Stay with me tonight, Vica. Let me hold you. Let me show you how much I’ve missed you.”

She nodded, her fingers weaving into my hair. “Take me home, Roland. Wherever you are, that’s where I belong.”

I took her hand, lacing our fingers together as I led her toward my truck. The base lights glowed in the distance, the sounds of military life carrying on the evening air. *This is it. Our second chance.* I glanced at Vica, her face soft in the fading light, and knew without a doubt—this time, we’d get it right.

*What’s next for us, Vica?* I squeezed her hand, a grin twitching at my lips. *Whatever it is, we’ll face it. Together.*

The first stars pricked the sky as we drove, the night clear and cool.
