The Amber Rule
She took a quick shower, the hot water soothing her sore muscles, and then dressed in a soft sweater and jeans, the amber pendant glinting at her throat. When she made her way downstairs, Daniel was at the stove, flipping pancakes with the ease of long practice. He looked up as she entered, his blue eyes warm behind his glasses.
“Morning, beautiful,” he said, his voice low and rough. “Sleep well?”
Christy nodded, a smile tugging at her lips as she crossed the kitchen to wrap her arms around his waist. “Like a rock,” she said, her cheek pressed against his back. “Someone wore me out last night.”
Daniel chuckled, his free hand coming up to cover hers. “The pleasure was all mine,” he said, his voice teasing. He flipped the last pancake onto a plate and turned in her arms, his lips brushing her forehead. “Hungry?”
“Starving,” Christy said, her stomach growling on cue. She took a seat at the kitchen island, watching as Daniel plated the pancakes and bacon, pouring her a mug of coffee just the way she liked it. “This smells amazing,” she said, inhaling the rich aroma. “You didn’t have to go to all this trouble.”
Daniel shrugged, setting the plate in front of her with a flourish. “I wanted to,” he said, his gaze flicking to the amber pendant at her throat. “Besides, I figured we could use a little fuel for the day ahead.”
Christy’s heart skipped a beat, her fingers tightening around her mug. “The day ahead?” she asked, her voice carefully neutral.
Daniel nodded, his blue eyes meeting hers. “I’ve been thinking about what you said last night,” he said, his voice low. “About wanting me to be a part of this. To watch you with someone else.” He took a deep breath, his jaw tightening slightly. “I want that too, Ev. I want to see you come alive under someone else’s touch, knowing that you’re still mine at the end of the day.”
Christy’s breath hitched, her body thrilling at his words. “You mean it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I do,” Daniel said, his gaze intense as he reached across the island to take her hand. “I trust you, Ev. I trust us. And I want to explore this with you, really explore it.” He squeezed her fingers, his thumb brushing over the amber pendant. “But I need to know that you’re sure. That this is really what you want.”
Christy nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “It is,” she said, her voice firm. “I want this, Daniel. I want to share this with you.”
Daniel’s shoulders relaxed, his smile turning genuine. “Okay,” he said, his voice warm. “Then let’s do it. Let’s call Ralph and set something up.”
Christy’s stomach fluttered with nerves and excitement. “Just like that?” she asked, her voice a little unsteady.
“Just like that,” Daniel said, his grin turning wicked. “But first, eat your breakfast. You’re going to need your strength.”
They ate quickly, the air between them charged with anticipation. When they were finished, Daniel pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts until he found Ralph’s number. He handed the phone to Christy, his blue eyes glinting behind his glasses. “Do the honors,” he said, his voice low. “Set something up for tonight.”
Christy took the phone with trembling fingers, her heart pounding in her chest as she dialed Ralph’s number. He picked up on the second ring, his voice warm and rich in her ear. “Christy,” he said, his tone surprised. “I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon.”
“Ralph,” Christy said, her voice a little breathless. “I hope I’m not bothering you.”
“Not at all,” Ralph said, his grin evident even through the phone. “I’m glad you called. What can I do for you?”
Christy took a deep breath, her fingers tightening around the phone. “I was wondering if you were free tonight,” she said, her voice low. “Daniel and I would like to have dinner with you. To discuss… the possibility of taking things further.”
There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line, and then Ralph’s voice came back, low and rough. “I’m free,” he said, his tone leaving no doubt as to his interest. “Just tell me when and where.”
They made plans to meet at a quiet Italian restaurant downtown, the kind of place with low lighting and private booths. When Christy hung up the phone, her heart was racing, her body thrumming with anticipation. She looked up at Daniel, who was watching her with a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
“Nervous?” he asked, his voice low as he pulled her into his arms.
Christy nodded, her cheek pressed against his chest. “A little,” she admitted. “But mostly excited. I can’t wait to see where this leads.”
Daniel’s arms tightened around her, his lips brushing her hair. “Me too,” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “Me too.”
The rest of the day passed in a blur of anticipation, the minutes crawling by as Christy tried to focus on work, on anything other than the night ahead. When it was finally time to get ready, she took special care with her appearance, choosing a sleek black dress that hugged her curves and dipped low in the back. She left her auburn hair loose around her shoulders and kept her makeup simple, wanting to look elegant and understated.
The amber pendant was the finishing touch, glinting at her throat like a promise. She touched it with trembling fingers, drawing strength from its warm weight. When she made her way downstairs, Daniel was waiting for her in the living room, his salt-and-pepper hair combed back from his forehead, his blue eyes dark and intense behind his glasses. He wore a simple black button-down and slacks, his broad shoulders filling out the fabric nicely.
“You look beautiful,” he said, his voice low as he crossed the room to take her hands. “Ralph won’t know what hit him.”
Christy’s heart skipped a beat, her body flushing with heat at his words. “You don’t look so bad yourself,” she murmured, her free hand coming up to brush his jaw.
Daniel turned his head, pressing a kiss to her palm. “Shall we?” he asked, his gaze flicking to the door.
Christy nodded, her stomach fluttering with nerves as they made their way out to the car. The drive to the restaurant was quiet, the air between them charged with unspoken tension. Daniel’s hand rested on her thigh, his thumb tracing lazy circles on her skin, a silent reminder of his presence, his support.
When they arrived at the restaurant, Ralph was already waiting for them at the bar, his dark hair and broad shoulders unmistakable even in the low light. He turned as they approached, his brown eyes lighting up with appreciation as they landed on Christy. “Wow,” he said, his voice warm as he leaned in to press a kiss to her cheek. “You look stunning, Ev.”
Christy felt a flush rise to her cheeks, her skin tingling where he’d touched her. “Thank you,” she said, her voice a little breathless. “You look pretty great yourself.”
Ralph grinned, his gaze flicking to Daniel. “Daniel,” he said, his voice friendly as he extended his hand. “Good to see you again.”
Daniel shook his hand, his grip firm, his blue eyes watchful behind his glasses. “You too, Ralph,” he said, his voice carefully neutral. “Shall we get a table?”
They followed the hostess to a private booth in the back of the restaurant, the low lighting and plush seats creating an intimate atmosphere. Christy slid into the booth first, Ralph following close behind, his thigh brushing hers under the table. Daniel took the seat across from them, his gaze never leaving Christy’s face.
The conversation started out light, Ralph asking about their work, their lives, the easy flow of old friends catching up. But as the wine flowed and the courses came and went, the tension between them grew, the air crackling with unspoken desire. Christy could feel Daniel’s eyes on her, watching, waiting, his gaze a physical weight on her skin.
“So,” Ralph said finally, his voice low as he leaned in close, his arm brushing Christy’s on the table. “I have to admit, I was a little surprised to get your call, Ev. I didn’t think you’d be interested in taking things further, given our conversation at the country club.”
Christy’s heart skipped a beat, her fingers tightening around her wine glass. “I wasn’t sure at first,” she admitted, her gaze flicking to Daniel across the table. “But Daniel and I talked it over, and we’re both interested in exploring something new. Together.”
Ralph’s eyebrows lifted slightly, his gaze following hers to Daniel. “I see,” he said, his voice thoughtful. “And what exactly did you have in mind?”
