The Cartel's Bargain
I rise to my feet, my heart pounding against my ribs. “And what do you see when you look at me?” I whisper, my voice trembling.
“I see a woman who is fierce and unbroken,” he murmurs, his hand cupping my cheek. “A woman who has every reason to hate me, but who somehow found it in herself to—” He cuts himself off, his jaw tightening. “To what? Forgive me? I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I don’t deserve you.”
I lean into his touch, my eyes fluttering closed. “No,” I agree softly. “You don’t. But maybe that’s not what this is about. Maybe it’s not about forgiveness or redemption. Maybe it’s about something else entirely.”
He tilts my chin up, his thumb brushing over my lower lip. “And what’s that?” he breathes.
I open my eyes, meeting his gaze head-on. “Loyalty,” I say simply. “Not to your cartel or your empire, but to you. To the man you are, not the monster you pretend to be.”
He kisses me then, and it’s different from all the times before. It’s not angry or possessive or cruel. It’s tender. Reverent. Almost… loving. I kiss him back, pouring all my confusion and longing and reluctant affection into the press of my lips against his.
When we part, we’re both breathless, our foreheads pressed together. “This changes everything,” he says, his voice low and fervent. “No more secrets. No more games. From now on, we’re in this together. You and me against the world.”
I smile, a real one this time, not the brittle, practiced one I’ve perfected over the years. “Together,” I agree, my arms winding around his neck.
He sweeps me into his arms and lays me down on the bed, his body covering mine. We make love as the sun rises, our movements slow and unhurried, a languid dance of give and take. It’s a promise, a vow, a forging of something new and dangerous and beautiful.
Afterward, we lie tangled together, our hearts beating in sync. I rest my head on his chest, listening to the steady thrum beneath my ear. For the first time since this whole mess began, I feel a sense of peace. A sense of belonging.
“I love you, Elena Santos,” Mateo murmurs, his voice rough with sleep.
I smile against his skin. “I love you too, Mateo Rivera,” I whisper.
And that was the beginning.
