The Cartel's Bargain
Mateo stands, his naked body glistening in the sunlight. He looks like a god, a fallen angel sent to tempt me into ruin. “It changes everything,” he says, his tone brooking no argument. “But you’re right. This stays between us. No one can know.”
I stare at him, incredulous. “You expect me to keep your dirty little secret? To pretend that this—” I gesture between us, my hand shaking, “—never happened?”
He steps closer, his eyes boring into mine. “You will,” he says, his voice low and dangerous. “Because if anyone finds out, if anyone even suspects, the consequences will be dire. For both of us.”
I lift my chin, meeting his gaze head-on. “I’m not afraid of you,” I lie, my heart pounding against my ribs.
He smiles, a cold, cruel thing that doesn’t reach his eyes. “You should be,” he says softly. “Because I will destroy anyone who threatens what’s mine. And make no mistake, Elena. You are mine. Body and soul. And I will never let you go.”
He turns and walks away, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts and the taste of him still on my tongue. I sink to the floor, my knees giving out beneath me. I’ve just made a deal with the devil, and I have no idea how I’ll survive it. But I know one thing for certain: I will shatter his carefully constructed world, no matter the cost. I will be his ruin, even if I have to burn alongside him.
The memory of that morning fuels my resolve in the weeks that follow. I play the dutiful wife in public, cool and composed at Mateo’s side. But in private, I chip away at his defenses, seeking out weaknesses in his organization, his security, his very psyche. We continue our dangerous game, stolen moments of violent passion that leave us both bruised and gasping. Each encounter is a battle, a clash of wills and bodies that only leaves me wanting more. More of his touch, his taste, his cruelty. I hate him, but I crave him like a drug, and the contradiction threatens to tear me apart.
The breaking point comes during a high-stakes meeting on a private island off the coast. Mateo’s associates from around the world have gathered to discuss a new alliance, one that would cement his power and expand his empire. I’m expected to play the gracious hostess, charming and decorative, while the men talk business and smoke cigars.
We’re on the sprawling terrace of the villa, the turquoise sea glittering in the distance. I move among the guests, refilling drinks and making small talk, the perfect mafia wife. But inside, I’m seething. These men, with their gold watches and bloated egos, think they own the world. They think they own me.
Mateo is deep in conversation with a Russian oligarch, his expression unreadable. I watch him from across the terrace, my hatred warring with my desire. He looks up, sensing my gaze, and our eyes lock. A silent challenge passes between us, a promise of retribution.
As the sun begins to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, I make my move. I walk up to Mateo and his associate, a sweet smile plastered on my face. “Gentlemen,” I purr, my voice dripping with false honey. “I hope you’re enjoying the party.”
The Russian leers at me, his eyes crawling over my body. “We are indeed,” he says, his accent thick. “Though I must say, the view has just improved dramatically.”
I force a laugh, playing the role of the flattered trophy wife. “You’re too kind,” I simper, placing a hand on Mateo’s arm. “But I’m afraid I must steal my husband away for a moment. There’s a matter I need to discuss with him in private.”
Mateo’s jaw tightens, but he nods curtly. “If you’ll excuse us,” he says to the Russian, his tone clipped.
I lead him into the villa, my hips swaying with exaggerated seduction. Once we’re out of sight, I turn to face him, my smile vanishing. “What the fuck was that?” I hiss, my voice low and venomous. “You let that pig ogle me like a piece of meat.”
Mateo’s eyes flash with anger. “You know the role you’re here to play,” he growls. “Don’t pretend you’re some innocent victim.”
I step closer, my body brushing against his. “Oh, I know my role,” I breathe, my lips curving into a mocking smile. “I’m your dirty little secret, aren’t I? The wife you fuck on the kitchen floor but refuse to acknowledge in public.”
His hand clamps around my wrist, his grip punishing. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Elena,” he warns, his voice lethally soft.
I lean in, my lips brushing the shell of his ear. “Maybe I like dangerous games,” I whisper, nipping at his earlobe. “Maybe I want everyone to know that I’m the one who makes Mateo Rivera lose control.”
He jerks back, his eyes blazing with fury. “You little bitch,” he snarls, his hand fisting in my hair. “You think you can manipulate me? You think you can use your body to get what you want?”
I laugh in his face, the sound harsh and wild. “Isn’t that what you’re doing?” I taunt. “Using me to further your own agenda?”
He slams me against the wall, his body pinning me in place. “You are my wife,” he growls, his erection pressing against my stomach. “That means something in our world. Or have you forgotten?”
I grind my hips against his, my core throbbing with need. “I haven’t forgotten,” I purr, my hands sliding up his chest. “I just don’t care.”
He captures my lips in a brutal kiss, his tongue invading my mouth, claiming me. I kiss him back just as fiercely, my nails raking down his back. We tear at each other’s clothes, buttons flying and fabric ripping. He hoists me up, my legs wrapping around his waist, and slams into me in one brutal thrust.
I cry out, my head thudding against the wall as he fucks me with savage intensity. He pounds into me, his hips snapping against mine, his hands digging into my flesh. “You want everyone to know you’re mine?” he rasps, his voice raw with lust. “Is that what you want, you little slut?”
I moan brokenly, my body trembling on the edge of release. “Yes,” I gasp, my nails scoring his shoulders. “Fuck, yes. Make me yours. Make me—”
He silences me with another searing kiss, his tongue fucking my mouth in time with his thrusts. Pleasure coils tighter and tighter inside me, until it detonates in a blinding burst of ecstasy. I scream his name as I come, my walls clamping down on his cock like a vise.
He follows me over the edge a moment later, his body shuddering as he empties himself inside me. We stay like that for a long moment, gasping and shaking, our sweat-slicked skin sticking together.
Finally, he pulls out of me, tucking himself back into his pants. I slide down the wall, my legs trembling, my dress torn and rumpled. He looks down at me, his expression unreadable. “You got what you wanted,” he says, his voice cold. “Everyone on that terrace heard you screaming my name. They’ll never look at you the same way again.”
I meet his gaze, my chin lifted in defiance. “Good,” I say, my voice steady despite the tremors wracking my body. “Let them know. Let them all fucking know that I belong to you, body and soul.”
He stares at me for a long moment, his eyes dark and turbulent. Then he turns and walks away, leaving me alone with the taste of victory and ashes on my tongue.
I don’t see Mateo for the rest of the night. I retreat to our suite, my body aching, my mind reeling. What have I done? I set out to destroy him, to dismantle his empire brick by brutal brick. But somewhere along the way, the lines blurred. The hatred became something else, something far more dangerous. Something that feels perilously close to loyalty.
When he finally enters the bedroom, the first rays of dawn painting the sky outside, I’m sitting on the edge of the bed, still wearing my torn dress. He looks exhausted, his hair disheveled, his tie askew. He meets my gaze, and for a moment, I see past the mask, past the cold, ruthless lawyer. I see the man beneath, raw and vulnerable, and it terrifies me.
“You were right,” he says, his voice rough with emotion. “I was using you. Using this marriage to further my own agenda.” He takes a step toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. “But somewhere along the way, it stopped being about strategy. It stopped being about alliances and power plays.” Another step, and he’s standing before me, close enough to touch. “It became about you, Elena. About the way you challenge me. The way you see me, even when I don’t want to be seen.”
