The Clockmaker's Star
As the weeks passed, I felt a change come over me, a lightness in my step and a warmth in my chest that hadn't been there before. It was you, River. You were the missing piece I hadn't even known I was looking for, the answer to a question I hadn't dared to ask.
We settled into a comfortable routine, spending our days together in the shop and our nights together under the stars. You started leaving your things at my place - a toothbrush on the sink, a few shirts in my closet - and I found myself looking forward to the little signs of your presence in my space.
One day, as I was working on your grandfather's watch, I had an idea. I carefully pried open the back of the casing and slipped a tiny piece of paper inside, upon which I had written a single word: "Forever." It was a small thing, but it felt like a promise, a symbol of the commitment I was ready to make to you.
I finished the repairs and polished the watch until it shone. Then I called you and asked you to meet me at the shop after closing time. "I have something for you," I said, trying to keep the nervousness out of my voice.
You showed up right on time, your face curious and expectant. "What's going on?" you asked, stepping inside and looking around at the empty shop.
"I finished your grandfather's watch," I said, holding it out to you on the palm of my hand. "I wanted you to be the first to see it."
You took the watch carefully, turning it over in your fingers. "It looks amazing," you said, your voice hushed with awe. "Just like new."
"There's something else," I said, taking a deep breath. "Look inside."
You frowned, puzzled, but did as I asked. I saw your eyes widen as you read the tiny slip of paper tucked inside the casing. "Forever?" you said, looking up at me with a question in your eyes.
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. "Forever," I said. "If you'll have me."
For a long moment, you just stared at me, your face unreadable. Then, slowly, you set the watch down on the counter and took my face in your hands. "Alex," you said, your voice thick with emotion. "Are you sure?"
"I've never been more sure of anything in my life," I said, my eyes locked on yours.
Then you were kissing me, and it was like coming home and setting out on a grand adventure all at once. You poured all of your love and longing into that kiss, and I answered it with my own, wrapping my arms around your neck and pulling you close.
When we finally broke apart, we were both breathless and flushed, our foreheads pressed together. "Forever," you whispered, and it sounded like a vow.
"Forever," I echoed, and I knew that it was true.
Later that night, we lay together in the grass by the river, our hands clasped as we gazed up at the stars. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" you said, your voice soft with wonder. "All of it. The stars, the universe, the fact that we get to be here, together, in this moment."
"It is," I said, turning my head to look at you. "And I wouldn't want to be here with anyone else."
You smiled at me then, a smile that was like the sun coming out after a long winter. "I love you, Alex," you said, your voice sure and strong. "I think I have from the very first moment I saw you."
"I love you too, River," I said, and as I spoke the words, I felt a sense of rightness settle over me, like a key turning in a lock. "More than anything."
We fell silent then, content just to be together under the vast and starry sky. As I lay there, listening to the steady sound of your breathing beside me, I thought about the journey that had brought us to this moment - the missteps and misunderstandings, the fears and doubts, the slow and steady building of trust and love.
It hadn't been easy, but it had been worth it. Worth every moment of uncertainty, every leap of faith. Because in the end, it had brought us here, to this perfect, shining moment, with the whole of the universe spread out before us and the promise of forever in our hearts.
I didn't know what the future held, but I knew that whatever came, we would face it together. Two lost stars, finally found. Two hearts, beating as one. A love written in the stars and the ticking of a thousand clocks, a love that would last long after the final gear had turned and the last star had faded from the sky.
And so, my love, we come to the end of my story - or rather, to the end of this chapter of it. The rest is still being written, day by day, moment by moment, in the smiles we share and the dreams we build together. I can't wait to see what the next page holds.
Until then, I'll be here, loving you, always.
Forever and ever,
Alex
P.S. I'll meet you under the stars tonight. Don't be late.
