The Firehouse Confession
“Uh, no. I’m not single.” My cheeks heat, and I take a gulp of my beer, avoiding Terrill’s eyes. “I’m actually… seeing someone.”
“Oh?” Tiffany’s eyebrows shoot up, and she glances between me and Terrill, a knowing smile spreading across her face. “Anyone I know?”
I open my mouth to deflect, but Cooper cuts in, his voice slurring. “Yeah, Jamie’s got a boyfriend. Don’t you, J?” He claps me on the shoulder, nearly toppling over. “Keeps it on the down-low, but we all know.”
My blood runs cold, the world narrowing to a pinpoint. No. No, no, no. This can’t be happening.
“Coop, man, shut up,” one of the other guys mutters, looking uncomfortable.
But Cooper’s on a roll, his voice rising over the music. “What, it’s not like it’s a secret. Jamie’s gay. Always has been. And I think I know who he’s banging.” He leers at Terrill, his grin turning nasty. “Fucking the LT, aren’t you, Chen? You tap that old man ass?”
The room falls silent, every eye turning to us. My face is burning, my heart pounding in my ears. I can feel Terrill stiffening beside me, his hand clenching into a fist at his side.
This is it. The moment I’ve been dreading. The moment everything comes crashing down.
I open my mouth, ready to deny it, to play it off as a joke. But then I look at Terrill, really look at him. He’s pale, his jaw clenched, his eyes wide with panic. He’s terrified. And I can’t… I can’t do this to him. I can’t ask him to face this alone.
I take a deep breath, my voice shaky but clear. “Yeah. Yeah, I am.”
A murmur goes through the crowd, disbelief and shock rippling across their faces. Terrill makes a strangled noise, his hand spasming in mine. I hold on tight, my gaze locked on his.
“I’m in love with him.” The words feel like they’re torn from my chest, raw and real. “I have been for a long time. And he’s in love with me too. He’s just… scared. Scared of what you’ll all think. Scared of losing everything he’s worked for.”
I turn to face the room, my chin held high. “But I’m not scared anymore. I’m proud to be with him. Proud to love him. And if you’ve got a problem with that… well, fuck you.”
The silence is deafening, the air thick with tension. No one moves, no one speaks, every eye glued to me and Terrill.
Then, slowly, Terrill steps forward, his hand slipping from mine. My heart stops, my stomach dropping. Is he… is he going to deny it? Walk away?
But he doesn’t. He turns to face me, his expression soft, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “Jamie’s right,” he says, his voice rough but steady. “I am in love with him. I have been for a long time. And I’m… I’m tired of hiding. Tired of being afraid.”
He takes my hand again, lacing our fingers together, his touch warm and sure. “I love you, Jamie Chen. And I don’t care who knows it.”
My breath catches, my eyes welling up. “I love you too, Terrill Morales.”
We stand there for a long moment, just holding hands, the room still silent around us. Then, slowly, a few people start to clap. Then a few more. And a few more, until the whole room is applauding, cheers and whistles rising above the sound.
Cooper’s face is red, his mouth hanging open. “What the fuck, man? I was just joking–”
“Shut up, Coop.” Captain Martinez steps forward, his expression serious but not unkind. “You’ve said enough for one night.” He turns to me and Terrill, his gaze assessing. “You two… this is a big step. You know the department’s not exactly… progressive.”
Terrill nods, his jaw tight. “We know, Cap. We’re ready to face the consequences. Whatever they are.”
Martinez sighs, rubbing a hand over his face. “Alright. We’ll… we’ll talk about it Monday. For now…” He gestures to the crowd, which is starting to murmur again, the initial shock wearing off. “Try to enjoy the rest of your night, okay? You’re gonna need your strength for the fallout.”
He walks away, leaving me and Terrill standing there, hands clasped, hearts pounding. The music starts up again, the chatter resuming, but I can feel the eyes on us, the whispers, the speculation.
“Terrill,” I murmur, my voice thick. “Are you sure about this?”
He turns to me, his gaze fierce, his grip on my hand almost painful. “I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.” He tugs me close, his lips brushing my ear. “Now dance with me, baby. Let’s give them something to really talk about.”
I laugh, the sound shaky but real, and let him lead me out onto the dance floor. We sway together, his arms around my waist, my head on his shoulder, the world narrowing to just him, just me, just the beat of our hearts in sync.
It’s not perfect. It’s not easy. But it’s us. It’s real.
And for now, that’s enough.
Weather report: Clear skies, a sliver of moon hanging low over the city, the distant wail of a siren the only sound in the stillness.
The next few weeks are a blur of meetings and paperwork and awkward conversations with HR. There are plenty of people who aren’t happy about us being together, who think it’s “inappropriate” or “unprofessional” for two first responders to be in a relationship. We get a few dirty looks in the hallways, a couple of snide comments when they think we can’t hear.
But there’s also support, more than I expected. Captain Martinez has our backs, making it clear to the higher-ups that our relationship doesn’t affect our job performance. A few of the younger guys, the ones who were always friendly with Jamie, go out of their way to be welcoming, inviting us out for beers after shift, treating us like it’s no big deal.
It’s not easy, navigating it all. There are days when the stress gets to me, when I want to crawl back into the closet and slam the door. But then I look at Jamie, at the way he smiles at me across the bunk room, the way he holds my hand when we’re alone, and I know I wouldn’t go back, not for anything.
We’re lying in my bed one Saturday morning, the sun just starting to peek through the curtains. Jamie’s head is pillowed on my chest, his fingers tracing idle patterns on my skin. “You awake?” he murmurs, his voice rough with sleep.
I hum in response, my fingers carding through his hair. “Mm. Been awake for a while. Just thinking.”
“About what?”
I glance down at him, my heart flipping at the sight of him, all rumpled and warm and mine. “About how lucky I am. How I never thought I’d have this. Have you.”
Jamie smiles, soft and sweet, and presses a kiss to my pec. “I’m the lucky one. I get to have you. Grumpy old man and all.”
I snort, pinching his side lightly. “Brat.”
He laughs, squirming against me. “You love it.”
“Yeah,” I say, my voice going soft. “Yeah, I really do.”
We lapse into silence for a long moment, just holding each other, the world feeling quiet and still around us. The sun’s rising higher, painting the room in warm gold light, the birds starting to chirp outside.
“Terrill?” Jamie says after a while, his head tilting back to look at me.
“Hmm?”
He takes a deep breath, his eyes searching mine. “Where do we go from here?”
