The Fireman and the Nurse

He moved then. Just a fraction. Turned so he was facing Jake fully.

Their eyes met. Held.

Jake’s heart hammered against his ribs. He could feel the heat of Scottie’s body, smell the clean, spicy scent of his cologne.

*This is it,* he thought. *The moment.*

He wanted to kiss Scottie. Wanted it more than he’d wanted anything in a long time.

But fear held him back. Fear of rejection. Fear of moving too fast. Fear of… everything.

Scottie seemed to sense his hesitation. His hand slid from Jake’s arm. He took a small step back.

"Come on," he said, his voice rough. "Let’s go for a walk. I think I saw a trailhead near the cabins."

Jake blinked. "A walk?"

"Yep." Scottie grinned. "Less temptation out in the woods. More… scenery."

He set off down the path that led away from the lodge. Jake watched him go, his mind reeling.

*Less temptation?* Was that what Scottie thought this was? Just… physical?

Embarrassment washed over him. He’d misread the situation. Misread Scottie’s interest.

"Idiot," he muttered to himself.

"Coming?" Scottie called over his shoulder.

Jake sighed. "Yeah." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "Coming."

He followed Scottie into the trees, the darkness closing around them like a blanket. The sounds of the retreat faded, replaced by the crunch of their footsteps on the gravel path and the distant call of a lone bird.

They walked in silence for a while, the tension thick between them. Jake’s mind raced. What was he doing here? What did he want?

*Scottie. You want Scottie.*

The thought was undeniable. Terrifying.

"This is me," Scottie said suddenly. They’d stopped in front of one of the guest cabins. "Cabin six."

Jake looked at him. Really looked. At the strong lines of his face. The warmth in his eyes. The slight curve of his lips.

*He’s beautiful,* Jake thought. *And he’s here. Now.*

"Jake?" Scottie’s voice was soft. Questioning.

Jake’s heart hammered. *Do it. Kiss him. Now.*

But he couldn’t. The fear was too strong. The memory of his last encounter – the shame, the recrimination – too fresh.

"I should go," he said abruptly. "Early morning. Firefighter’s hours."

He turned to leave.

Scottie’s hand on his arm stopped him. "Jake. Wait."

Jake froze. Didn’t dare turn around.

"I’m not going to push you," Scottie murmured. "But I’m also not going to pretend I don’t feel… this. Whatever this is."

He moved closer. Jake could feel the heat of him against his back. The brush of his breath against his neck.

"If you want to walk away, I won’t stop you. But if you want to stay…" Scottie’s hand tightened on Jake’s arm. "I’m here. However you need me to be."

Jake shuddered. *However you need me to be.* The words were a promise. A lifeline.

He turned. Slowly. His eyes met Scottie’s.

There was no judgement there. No pressure. Just… understanding.

"Stay," Scottie whispered. "Please."

Jake’s resistance crumbled. He stepped forward. Into Scottie’s space. Into his arms.

Their lips met. Soft. Tentative. A question and an answer all at once.

Scottie’s hand slid up Jake’s arm. Over his shoulder. To the back of his neck. He pulled Jake closer. Deepened the kiss.

Jake groaned. He’d never been kissed like this. With such tenderness. Such reverence.

He lost himself in the feel of it. In the taste of Scottie. In the warmth of his body against Jake’s.

When they finally broke apart, they were both breathing hard.

"Wow," Scottie murmured. "That was…"

"Amazing," Jake finished.

Scottie grinned. "Want to do it again?"

Jake answered with another kiss. This one was less gentle. More urgent. Needier.

He backed Scottie toward the cabin. Toward the door. Toward… more.

Scottie didn’t resist. Just held on. Met Jake’s passion with his own.

They stumbled inside. The door slammed shut behind them.

Clothes came off. Hands roamed. Skin met skin.

Jake lost track of time. Of thought. There was only Scottie. Only this moment.

They made love in the dark. Slowly. Sweetly. Taking their time.

Jake had never experienced anything like it. The intimacy. The connection. The… rightness.

Afterward, they lay tangled together. Scottie’s head on Jake’s chest. Jake’s arms around Scottie.

"This is usually the part where I panic," Jake admitted quietly.

"Not this time?" Scottie asked.

"No." Jake brushed a kiss over Scottie’s hair. "Not this time."

He felt… settled. At peace. Like he’d finally found where he belonged.

"Stay with me?" Scottie asked. "Tonight?"

Jake tightened his arms around him. "Try to make me leave."

Scottie chuckled. "Wouldn’t dream of it."

They drifted off to sleep like that. Wrapped in each other. Safe. Together.

Jake’s last thought before exhaustion claimed him was of the stars he’d seen on his birthday. The ones that had seemed so cold. So distant.

They didn’t feel so far away now. Not with Scottie in his arms. Not with this new beginning stretching out before them.

For the first time in a long time, Jake felt… hope.

Scottie’s hand settled on his arm. Light. Undemanding. "I’m a good listener. Kind of a job requirement."

Jake hesitated. He’d never talked about this. Not to anyone. But something about Scottie’s presence – his calm, his kindness – cracked Jake open.

"It was my birthday," he heard himself say. "Last year. My wife… she threw me this big party. All our friends. My colleagues from the firehouse."

He could still see it. The balloons. The cake. The forced smiles.

"I should have been happy. I had everything I’d ever wanted. A family. A career. A beautiful home."

"But?" Scottie prompted gently.

"But I felt… empty." Jake’s voice was barely a sound. "Like I was playing a part. Going through the motions."

He’d snuck outside at one point. Just to breathe. Found himself standing in the dark, staring up at the stars.

*"You okay?"*

The voice had startled him. One of his fellow firefighters. Tom. A man Jake had worked with for years.

*"Fine,"* Jake had lied.

Tom had moved closer. Clapped a hand on Jake’s shoulder. Let it linger.

*"You seem… tense,"* he’d murmured. *"Anything I can do?"*

There’d been something in Tom’s eyes. Something knowing. Something… inviting.

Jake had panicked. Jerked away like he’d been burned.

*"I’m fine,"* he’d snapped. *"Just need some air."*

He’d avoided Tom for the rest of the night. Avoided everyone. Made excuses to his wife and went to bed early.

"That was the moment," Jake told Scottie now. "The moment I knew I couldn’t keep pretending. That I had to… stop lying. To myself. To everyone."

He’d come out to his wife a week later. Moved out a month after that.

"It was messy," he said. "Painful. For everyone."

Scottie’s thumb stroked Jake’s arm. Slow. Soothing. "But necessary."

"Yeah." Jake took a shaky breath. "Necessary."

They stood in silence for a long moment. The sounds of the mixer drifted out to them – laughter, music, the clink of glasses. A world away.

"Thank you," Scottie said finally. "For trusting me with that."

Jake managed a nod. "Felt good. To say it out loud."

"That’s the first step." Scottie smiled. "Saying the quiet parts loud."

He moved then. Just a fraction. Turned so he was facing Jake fully.
