Room for Three Voices
Later, as the last guests trickled out into the cool night air, the three of us settled on the porch, wrapped in blankets and sipping hot cider. The stars were bright overhead, the moon casting a silvery glow over the fields.
“I love nights like this,” I murmured, leaning my head against Ludwig’s shoulder. “When everything feels… right.”
He kissed my temple, his arm tightening around me. “It’s taken a lot of work to get here, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
River nodded, his gaze thoughtful. “I never imagined I could feel so at home somewhere. You both have given me that.”
We sat in comfortable silence, the crackle of the fire and the chirp of crickets the only sounds. As I listened to the steady rhythm of Ludwig’s heartbeat and watched the play of emotions on River’s face, I knew that this was what love could be—expansive and inclusive, a tapestry woven from different threads that only grew stronger with each new addition.
Later that night, as I sat in bed with my journal, I let the events of the evening wash over me. The pen felt familiar in my hand, a companion on this journey of self-discovery and connection.
*October 12*
Tonight, as I watched Ludwig and River move through the kitchen together, I was struck by the beauty of what we’ve created. It hasn’t been easy—there have been tears and fears, moments when I wondered if we’d taken on more than we could handle. But seeing them laugh together, their shoulders brushing as they worked in tandem, I knew that every challenge had been worth it.
We’ve learned so much about ourselves and each other. Ludwig has found a new kind of strength in vulnerability, allowing himself to lean into his fears and come out the other side. River has discovered a sense of belonging he didn’t know he was missing, his art flourishing alongside our love. And I—I’ve learned that my heart is capable of holding so much more than I ever imagined.
This life we’re building isn’t perfect, but it’s ours. It’s a testament to the power of love in all its forms, a reminder that the geometry of the heart is far more complex and beautiful than any one relationship could contain.
As I close this journal, I feel a sense of peace settle over me. Whatever comes next, I know we’ll face it together—Ludwig, River, and me, a constellation of love that shines brighter with each passing day.
In the weeks that followed, our lives continued to intertwine in new and beautiful ways. We began working on a community art project, a mural that would stretch across the side of the local co-op. River sketched the design, his pencil flying across the page as he captured the essence of our shared vision—hands reaching toward each other, vines intertwining, a sunburst of color that symbolized hope and connection.
Ludwig and I worked alongside him, our hands covered in paint as we brought the mural to life. Passersby stopped to watch, their faces lighting up as they took in the vibrant scene. Children added their handprints to the border, a rainbow of colors that danced across the wall.
As we stepped back to admire our work, I felt Ludwig’s hand slip into mine, his fingers warm and familiar. River stood on my other side, his shoulder brushing mine as he surveyed the mural with pride.
“It’s beautiful,” I murmured, my heart full. “Just like us.”
Ludwig squeezed my hand, his smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. “It really is.”
River nodded, his gaze meeting mine. “A masterpiece.”
In that moment, surrounded by the vibrant colors of our creation and the warmth of the men I loved, I knew that this was what life was meant to be—a tapestry of love and connection, each thread adding depth and beauty to the whole. We had found our way, not in spite of the challenges, but because of them. And as the sun set over the co-op, casting the mural in a golden glow, I knew that whatever came next, we would face it together—bound by love, strengthened by trust, and forever intertwined.
