The Hollowing

HorrorComplete

At first, Morgan thought it was the wind, whistling through the eaves. But the sounds resolved into voices, faint and indistinct. They strained to listen, but the words remained just out of reach.

The whispers grew louder, more insistent. They seemed to come from the walls themselves, seeping through the plaster like some malignant growth. Morgan covered their ears, but the voices only grew clearer.

“…join us…” they whispered. “….embrace the darkness…”

Morgan’s heart raced, panic clawing at their throat. They stumbled from the room, fleeing down the hall. The whispers followed, echoing in the darkness.

They ran, feet pounding on the stairs, and burst into the foyer. The front door loomed ahead, a promise of escape. Morgan lunged for the handle, twisting it desperately.

The door wouldn’t budge. It was locked. No matter how they pulled, it refused to yield.

A cold laugh echoed behind them. Morgan whirled, but the foyer was empty. The laughter faded, leaving only silence.

They sank to the floor, back against the door, and buried their face in their hands. The house had them. Trapped. And the entity, the Hollowing, was growing stronger.

As the days passed, reality began to warp. Time seemed to stretch and twist, minutes bleeding into hours, hours into days. Morgan’s perception fractured, the world around them shifting and changing.

They’d find themselves standing in a room with no memory of how they got there. Hallways seemed to lengthen and twist, leading nowhere. The house itself seemed alive, pulsing with malevolent energy.

Morgan’s paranoia grew. They jumped at every sound, every flicker of movement. The journals spoke of the Hollowing’s power, of how it consumed its victims from the inside out, leaving only an empty shell.

They had to escape. But how? The doors wouldn’t open. The windows wouldn’t break. And the entity was always watching, waiting.

One afternoon, as they huddled in the library, a thought occurred to Morgan. The journals spoke of a focal point, a nexus of the Hollowing’s power. If they could find it, perhaps they could weaken the entity. Break its hold on the house.

It was a long shot, but it was all they had. Morgan stood, resolve hardening within them. They would confront the Hollowing. Or die trying.

As they made their way deeper into the house, the air grew thick and heavy. Shadows writhed like living things, the walls seeming to pulse and breathe. Morgan’s heart hammered against their ribs, fear a tangible presence at the back of their throat.

They turned a corner, and the world seemed to shift. The hallway stretched before them, impossibly long. The walls were no longer wood and plaster, but something else. Something organic.

Morgan swallowed hard, forcing their feet forward. The air grew colder with each step, a sense of wrongness prickling at the edges of their awareness.

At last, they reached the end of the hall. A door loomed ahead, its surface black and shimmering. Morgan reached for the handle, their hand trembling.

As their fingers brushed the cold metal, the door swung open on silent hinges. Morgan stepped through, and the world fell away.

They stood in a vast, empty space. The walls were lost in shadow, the ceiling arching impossibly high above. The air was thick and still, heavy with the weight of ages.

In the center of the room stood a figure. It was tall and thin, its form shifting and indistinct. Shadows clung to it like a second skin, its features lost in darkness.

As Morgan watched, the figure turned. Eyes like pools of night met theirs, and a voice echoed in their mind.

“Welcome,” it whispered. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

Morgan’s breath caught in their throat, heart pounding against their ribs like a trapped bird. The figure stood motionless, its form shimmering at the edges as if not quite real. The eyes – those depthless pools of black – seemed to pierce through Morgan’s very soul, laying bare every fear, every secret shame.

“You have come at last,” the voice whispered, echoing not in the air but inside Morgan’s mind. “We have tasted your fear. Your despair. It is… intoxicating.”

“What are you?” Morgan choked out, the words barely more than a breath.

“We are the Hollowing,” the figure said, its form shifting, the shadows around it deepening. “We are the silence between heartbeats. The darkness behind closed eyes. We are eternal. And we hunger.”

Morgan shook their head, denial warring with the terrifying reality before them. “This isn’t real. You’re not real. I’m dreaming. Hallucinating.”

The figure laughed, a sound like shattering glass. “Are we not?” it asked, tilting its head. “And yet, here you stand. In the heart of our domain. Your fear has brought you to us. Made you ours.”

“No,” Morgan whispered, backing away, their feet sliding on the impossibly smooth floor. The room seemed to shift around them, the walls pulsing like a living thing. “I won’t let you. I’ll find a way out. I’ll-“

“There is no escape,” the Hollowing said, its voice hardening. “You are ours now. Body and soul. Your fear sustains us. Your terror gives us strength.”

As if in response to its words, the room began to change. The walls melted away, replaced by swirling darkness. The floor beneath Morgan’s feet became insubstantial, like walking on mist. Only the Hollowing remained, a fixed point in the shifting chaos.

Panic surged through Morgan’s veins, cold and sharp. They turned, stumbling, and ran. But the darkness clung to them, thick and cloying, dragging at their limbs like quicksand. The air grew heavy, pressing in on them from all sides.

They ran until their lungs burned, until their legs ached, but the scenery never changed. Endless darkness stretched out before them, the Hollowing’s laughter echoing in their mind.

At last, Morgan collapsed to their knees, breath coming in ragged gasps. Tears pricked at their eyes, hot and shameful. They were trapped. Lost in an endless labyrinth of the Hollowing’s making.

“You cannot outrun us,” the Hollowing’s voice whispered, seeming to come from all around them. “We are everywhere. We are everything.”

Morgan squeezed their eyes shut, trying to block out the voice, the darkness, the creeping dread that threatened to consume them. They thought of the journals, of the previous inhabitants who had fallen victim to the Hollowing’s hunger. Of the madness that had gripped them, the despair that had swallowed them whole.

They couldn’t let that happen. They wouldn’t.

With a shuddering breath, Morgan opened their eyes. The darkness was still there, but within it, they saw a glimmer of light. A flicker of hope.

They focused on that light, letting it fill their mind, pushing back against the fear that threatened to drown them. The Hollowing fed on terror, on despair. But what if they could starve it? Deny it the sustenance it craved?

It was a desperate gamble, a last-ditch effort. But it was all they had.

Morgan stood, squaring their shoulders, and turned to face the Hollowing. The figure stood before them, its form shifting, eyes like chips of obsidian.

“I know what you are,” Morgan said, their voice stronger than they felt. “I know what you want. But I won’t give it to you. I won’t let you win.”

The Hollowing laughed, the sound grating against Morgan’s nerves. “You think you can resist us?” it asked, its voice dripping with disdain. “You are nothing. A mote of dust in the wind. A flicker of candlelight in the dark.”

“I am more than that,” Morgan said, taking a step forward, then another. “I am human. I am alive. And I will not be consumed by you.”

As they spoke, they focused on the light within them, the spark of defiance that refused to be extinguished. They poured every ounce of will into it, shaping it, strengthening it.

The Hollowing’s form seemed to flicker, the shadows around it thinning. “What are you doing?” it hissed, its voice tinged with something like fear.

“I’m fighting back,” Morgan said, and thrust the light outward, shaping it into a blade of pure, brilliant energy.

The light struck the Hollowing, and the entity shrieked, a sound of agony and rage. Its form wavered, the shadows that comprised it shredding like mist in the wind.

But the Hollowing was not so easily defeated. With a roar of fury, it surged forward, shadows coalescing into grasping talons.

Morgan stumbled back, the light around them flickering, and braced for the impact.

The impact never came. One moment, the Hollowing was bearing down on Morgan, shadows writhing like a nest of vipers. The next, the world dissolved into a maelstrom of light and sound, a thousand screaming voices tearing through Morgan’s mind.

They were falling, tumbling through an endless void, the Hollowing’s roar echoing in their ears. Memories flashed before their eyes – childhood joys, past loves, moments of triumph and despair. The Hollowing was in all of them, a shadowy presence lurking at the edges, feeding on every fear, every sorrow.
