The Icebound Confession

AdventureComplete

FROST: Rescue’s en route. Couple hours. We… we did it, Elias.

ELIAS: We? You mean you did it. I mostly provided moral support. And sarcasm. And… excellent thermal barnacle services.

FROST: Team effort. Couldn’t have rigged the comms without your… unique motivational techniques. ‘Is that wire supposed to be sparking like a disco ball, Captain, or are we inventing a new form of Arctic rave?’ Very helpful.

ELIAS (laughs, a genuine, bright sound): Merely ensuring you were properly… stimulated. Can’t have you getting complacent. Even facing certain doom.

Another comfortable silence. Elias picks up the recorder, its battery light a persistent, angry red eye.

ELIAS: So. This is it, then? The end of the Icebound Confession? Seems… anti-climactic. No dramatic last words. No grand revelations. Just… waiting for a ride. And possibly frostbite checks.

FROST: Grand revelations are overrated. Prefer… practical survival. And… (he reaches out, his hand covering Elias’s where it holds the recorder) …this.

Elias looks at him, really looks. Frost’s face is still windburned, exhausted, but there’s a softness around his eyes Elias hasn’t seen before. A warmth that has nothing to do with the generator.

ELIAS: This?

FROST: Us. Still being here. Together. Against… considerable odds. That’s revelation enough for me.

Elias feels that tightness in his throat again. He flips the recorder off. The low hum dies abruptly.

ELIAS: You’re right. Some things… don’t need recording. Some things are just… for us.

He reaches for Frost’s hand, intertwining their fingers. Frost’s grip is strong, sure, an anchor in the lingering cold.

FROST: For us. Now… about those frostbite checks… Think we have time for a… thorough inspection before the cavalry arrives?

ELIAS: Captain Frost. Are you suggesting… vigorous activity? Post-rescue coordination? How scandalously unprofessional.

FROST: Merely ensuring all… vital systems are fully operational. Thorough captain. Can’t have you malfunctioning en route.

Elias laughs, the sound bright and alive in the battered station. He leans into Frost’s side, resting his head on the captain’s broad shoulder.

ELIAS: Well. In the interest of… operational readiness… I suppose a… diagnostic test wouldn’t go amiss. For science, naturally.

Frost’s arm comes around him, pulling him closer. His voice is a low rumble against Elias’s hair.

FROST: Naturally. All in the name of… science. And survival. Mostly survival.

Outside, the wind gives one last petulant howl before beginning to fade, as if conceding defeat. Inside the reinforced walls of the research station, wrapped in shared warmth and the fragile, tenacious hope of a future, Elias Thorne and Silas Frost wait for rescue, together. The recorder lies forgotten, its purpose served, its battery finally, peacefully, dead. The only sound is the quiet murmur of two voices, planning their next move, their next chapter, far from the ice.
