The Keeper of Last Words

She bent down, brushing the sand away, revealing a small, silver locket.

Her breath caught in her throat. She reached for the locket, her fingers trembling as she pried it open.

Inside, there was a picture of her and Franco, smiling and happy, their arms around each other. And tucked into the other side, a small, folded piece of paper.

Sheila’s heart began to race, a wild, frantic rhythm against her ribs. She lifted the paper out, unfolding it with shaking hands.

It was a note, written in Franco’s familiar scrawl.

*My dearest Sheila,*

*If you’ve found this, it means you’ve followed the trail to the end. It means you know the truth, or at least, as much of it as I can tell you.*

*I’m so sorry, Sheila. I’m sorry for the lies, for the secrets, for all the ways I’ve failed you. I never meant to hurt you. I only ever wanted to keep you safe.*

*But I see now that I’ve done the opposite. I’ve put you in danger, dragged you into this mess I’ve made of my life. And I don’t know how to fix it, how to make it right.*

[Pause] *I’ve been so scared, Sheila. Scared of being discovered, of being caught. Scared of what J would do to me, to you, if he ever found out I was trying to leave, to get out from under his thumb.*

*I’ve been running for so long, looking over my shoulder, jumping at every shadow. I’ve been so scared that I’ve forgotten how to live, how to love.*

[His voice cracks] *But I love you, Sheila. I love you more than anything in this world. And I’m so sorry for all the ways I’ve failed you, for all the ways I’ve let you down.*

*I don’t know what’s going to happen now, what the future holds. But I know I have to try to make this right, to find a way to keep you safe, no matter what it takes.*

[Pause] *I’ve left you one last clue, Sheila. One last piece of the puzzle. I hope you can forgive me for what I’ve done, for what I’m about to do.*

[Recorder clicks off]

Sheila set the note down, her heart heavy. She thought about Franco, about the man he’d been, the secrets he’d kept. She thought about the love they’d shared, the life they’d built together.

And she thought about the lies, the betrayal, the danger he’d brought into their lives.

She didn’t know what the future held, what the truth would reveal. But she knew she had to keep going, to keep searching, no matter how painful it might be.

She stood, tucking the locket and the note into her pocket. She would take them back to the lighthouse, back to the place where Franco had lived and loved and kept his secrets.

And she would find a way to forgive him, to forgive herself, for all the ways they’d failed each other.

And then, quietly, she began to climb.

[The recorder clicks on, Franco’s voice filling the silence]

Sheila, if you’re listening to this… if you’ve made it this far… then you know. You know the truth. Or at least, most of it.

[Pause]

I never meant for any of this to happen. I never meant to lie to you, to keep secrets from you. But I was scared, Sheila. I was so scared.

[His voice cracks]

It started small, you know. Just a few extra crates on the boat, a little something to supplement our income. I told myself it was harmless, that no one would ever know. But it escalated quickly. Before I knew it, I was in over my head, tangled up in something I couldn’t control.

[Pause]

J… he was the one who got me into this. He promised me easy money, a way to make a better life for us. But it was all a lie. He was using me, using my boat, to smuggle… things. Things I didn’t want to know about.

[Pause]

I tried to get out, Sheila. I swear I did. But J… he wouldn’t let me go. He threatened me, threatened you. He said if I ever tried to leave, if I ever went to the police… he’d make me regret it.

[His voice is shaky]

I was trapped, Sheila. Trapped in a web of my own making. And I didn’t know how to get out, how to keep you safe.

[Pause]

That night… the night I disappeared… I wasn’t out fishing. I was meeting J, trying to negotiate my way out. But it went wrong, Sheila. It went so wrong.

[His voice is strained]

There was a fight… I don’t remember all the details. But when it was over, J was… he was dead, Sheila. And I… I panicked. I didn’t know what to do.

[Pause]

I knew I couldn’t go to the police. I knew they’d never believe me, not with my record, not with the things I’d done. So I… I staged it. I made it look like I’d disappeared at sea, like I’d been lost to the waves.

[His voice is thick with tears]

I thought it was the only way to keep you safe, Sheila. I thought if I disappeared, if everyone thought I was dead… J’s associates would leave you alone. They’d think I was gone, that there was nothing left to tie them to me.

[Pause]

But I was wrong, Sheila. I see that now. I see how much I’ve hurt you, how much damage I’ve done.

[His voice breaks]

I’m so sorry, Sheila. I’m sorry for the lies, for the secrets, for all the ways I’ve failed you. I never meant to hurt you. I only ever wanted to keep you safe.

[Pause]

I don’t know what’s going to happen now, what the future holds. But I know I have to face the consequences of my actions, to take responsibility for what I’ve done.

[His voice is quiet, resigned]

I’m turning myself in, Sheila. I’m going to the police, to tell them everything. I don’t know what will happen to me, if they’ll believe me, if they’ll even listen. But I have to try. I have to do the right thing, for once in my life.

[Pause]

I love you, Sheila. I love you more than anything in this world. And I’m so sorry, for everything. I hope… I hope someday you can forgive me, even if you can’t understand.

[Pause]

Goodbye, Sheila. I love you. Always.

[The recorder clicks off]

Sheila sat in silence, the weight of Franco’s words pressing down on her like a physical thing. She felt numb, hollowed out, as if all the emotion had been drained from her body, leaving only a cold, empty shell.

She thought about Franco, about the man he’d been, the secrets he’d kept. She thought about the love they’d shared, the life they’d built together.

And she thought about the lies, the betrayal, the danger he’d brought into their lives.

She didn’t know how to feel, how to process the revelation. Part of her wanted to rage at him, to scream and cry and demand answers for all the ways he’d wronged her. But another part… another part just felt sad. Sad for him, sad for her, sad for the life they’d lost.

She didn’t know what the future held, what the truth would reveal. But she knew she had to keep going, to keep searching, no matter how painful it might be.

She stood, tucking the recorder into her pocket. She would take it back to the lighthouse, back to the place where Franco had lived and loved and kept his secrets.

And she would find a way to forgive him, to forgive herself, for all the ways they’d failed each other.

And then, quietly, she began to climb.

Sheila returned to the lighthouse, her heart heavy with the weight of Franco’s confession. She climbed the stairs to their living quarters, each step a reminder of the life they’d shared, the secrets they’d kept.

Inside, she set the recorder down on the table, her eyes lingering on it for a moment before turning away. She needed time, space, to process everything she’d learned.

She began to tidy the room, gathering up the scattered letters and papers, straightening the blankets on the bed. It was a small thing, a mundane task, but it gave her something to focus on, a way to ground herself in the present.

As she worked, her eyes fell on a small, leather-bound notebook tucked beneath a pile of books on the shelf. She hadn’t noticed it before, but something about it caught her eye, a sense of familiarity, of significance.

She reached for it, her fingers brushing against the worn leather cover. It was Franco’s journal, she realized, the one he’d always kept but never shared with her.

Her heart began to race, a wild, frantic rhythm against her ribs. She sat down on the edge of the bed, the journal heavy in her hands.
