The Last Night in Lisbon

You follow him out of the bedroom, padding down the cool tile hallway to the kitchen. The space is dark, quiet, the only light coming from the digital clock on the microwave. Mateo flicks on the overhead, the sudden brightness making you squint, and busies himself at the fridge, pulling out a jug of water and a container of fresh fruit.

“Wash up first?” he asks, nodding toward the sink, and you nod, grateful for his thoughtfulness. You take turns rinsing off, the cool water a balm to your overheated skin, and then Mateo is pressing a chilled bottle into your hand, guiding you to a chair at the small wooden table.

“Eat,” he orders gently, setting the fruit between you. “Replenish your strength.”

You dig in, suddenly ravenous, the sweet burst of pineapple and mango a welcome contrast to the salt and musk still lingering on your tongue. Mateo watches you, a small smile playing on his lips, his fingers tracing the condensation on his own bottle.

“Regrets?” he asks quietly, his gaze searching yours.

You shake your head, quick and certain. “None. Not a single one.” You reach across the table, lacing your fingers with his. “This was… everything I didn’t know I needed. Everything I never dared to want.”

His smile widens, his thumb stroking the back of your hand. “For me too, Luca. You have no idea.” He brings your knuckles to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to the skin. “This past week… you’ve become more than just a fling, more than just a holiday romance. You’ve become… real. Important.”

Your heart clenches at his words, at the sincerity in his eyes, and you squeeze his hand tighter. “You too, Mateo. More than I ever expected.” You take a deep breath, the bittersweet reality of the morning ahead settling over you like a lead weight. “But this… this has to be it, doesn’t it? Our lives… they’re oceans apart. Literally.”

He nods, his smile turning wistful. “I know. And I won’t ask you to change that, to uproot your life for… for whatever this is.” He brings your hand to his chest, pressing your palm over his heart. “But I will ask you this: let this night be ours. A perfect, secret memory, just for us. No promises, no expectations, no regrets. Just… us. Here. Now.”

You lean into him, resting your forehead against his, your breath mingling with his. “Yes,” you whisper, the word a vow. “Always yes. For tonight, and for always.”

He seals your promise with a kiss, slow and deep and heartbreakingly tender, and for a moment, the world falls away. There is only you, only him, only this perfect, stolen moment in a Lisbon kitchen, the future be damned. When you finally pull back, breathless and aching, it’s with the certainty that no matter what comes next, you’ll carry this night with you, a secret treasure, a perfect memory, forever.
