The Lavender Door
Cassidy often sits on the couch, their sketchbook in their lap, watching Morgan practice. They never fail to be amazed by the transformation that comes over their friend when she puts on her drag persona. Gone is the bubbly, slightly ditzy girl they know and love, replaced by a fierce, confident queen who commands the room with every step she takes.
"Whaddya think?" Morgan asks one afternoon, striking a pose in the middle of the living room, her sequined dress glittering in the sunlight streaming through the windows. "Is it too much? Not enough?"
Cassidy grins, setting their sketchbook aside. "It's perfect," they say, their voice warm with admiration. "You're going to bring the house down."
Morgan beams, her smile as bright as the sun. "I hope so," she says, her voice breathless with excitement. "I've been working on this routine for weeks."
She launches into the routine again, her body moving in perfect sync with the pulsing beat of the music. Cassidy watches, their heart full to bursting with pride and love for their friend. They know how much this means to Morgan, how hard she's worked to get to this point.
As the music fades out and Morgan strikes her final pose, Cassidy breaks into enthusiastic applause, whooping and cheering like they're at a real drag show.
"Bravo!" they shout, grinning from ear to ear. "Encore! Encore!"
Morgan takes a bow, her face flushed with pleasure. "Thank you, thank you," she says, her voice dripping with false modesty. "I'll be here all week."
Cassidy laughs, shaking their head in amusement. "You're ridiculous," they say, their voice warm with affection.
Morgan grins, sauntering over to the couch and plopping down next to Cassidy. "But you love me anyway," she says, bumping their shoulder against Cassidy's.
Cassidy bumps back, their heart full to bursting with the simple joy of this moment. "I really do," they say, their voice soft with emotion.
They sit like that for a while, shoulder to shoulder, watching as the afternoon light fades into the soft purple of dusk. Cassidy's sketchbook lies forgotten on the coffee table, Morgan's drag outfit draped over the back of a chair. In this moment, none of that matters. All that matters is the warmth of their friendship, the unbreakable bond that ties them together.
As the first stars begin to appear in the darkening sky outside, Cassidy can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this little apartment with the lavender door and the people who dwell within its walls. They are more than just roommates, more than just friends. They are a chosen family, bound together by love and acceptance and the shared journey of self-discovery.
Will the art that Cassidy creates and the performances that Morgan perfects help them both to heal and grow, to become the fullest versions of themselves?
The next morning dawns bright and clear, the sun streaming in through the lavender door and casting warm pools of light on the hardwood floors. Cassidy is sitting at the kitchen table, sketching idly in their notebook, while Morgan putters around the apartment, humming softly to herself. River is still asleep, his gentle snores drifting out from behind his bedroom door.
It's a peaceful scene, one that feels a world away from the drama and turmoil of the past few weeks. Cassidy can feel their body getting stronger each day, the pain of their surgery fading into a dull ache that they can manage with a few ibuprofen. They're still tired a lot, their energy levels nowhere near what they used to be, but they can feel themselves mending, bit by bit.
Morgan seems to be in a good place too, her excitement for her upcoming drag debut growing with each passing day. She's been spending hours each day perfecting her routine, her high heels clicking on the hardwood floors as she practices her moves.
As for River, well, Cassidy knows he's still struggling with his feelings for Eli, the ghost of his past relationship still lingering in the corners of his mind. But he seems to be doing better too, the sadness in his eyes a little less pronounced each day.
All in all, things seem to be looking up for the little chosen family in the lavender-doored apartment. Cassidy can feel a sense of hope blooming in their chest, a fragile thing, but there nonetheless.
So when a knock sounds at the door, sharp and unexpected, Cassidy feels a sudden jolt of fear. Who could be knocking at this hour? They exchange a worried glance with Morgan, who has paused in her puttering, her brow furrowed in concern.
"I'll get it," Cassidy says, setting their sketchbook aside and pushing themselves to their feet. They pad over to the door, their heart pounding in their chest. They peer through the peephole, but the hallway outside is empty, nothing but the faded floral wallpaper and the worn carpet.
Cassidy frowns, a prickle of unease running down their spine. They reach for the doorknob, turning it slowly. The door swings open with a soft creak, revealing... nothing. The hallway is empty, no sign of whoever had knocked.
"Weird," Cassidy mutters, stepping out into the hallway and looking around. "Could have sworn I heard someone knock."
Morgan appears at their shoulder, her face a mask of confusion. "Everything okay?" she asks, her voice laced with concern.
Cassidy shrugs, turning back to the apartment. "I guess so. Probably just--"
But before they can finish their sentence, a figure steps out from the shadows at the end of the hallway. Cassidy's heart leaps into their throat, their hand flying to their chest. Morgan lets out a little yelp of surprise, jumping back a step.
The figure is a man, tall and broad-shouldered, with a mop of curly brown hair and a face that looks vaguely familiar. He's wearing a worn leather jacket and a pair of faded jeans, a backpack slung over one shoulder. He looks tired, like he's been traveling for a long time.
"River?" he calls out, his voice rough with disuse. "Are you here?"
Cassidy's eyes widen in recognition. They've seen pictures of this man before, in the old photo albums that River keeps hidden away in his closet. It's Eli, River's ex-partner, the one who broke his heart all those years ago.
Before they can say anything, before they can warn River or send Eli away, River appears in the doorway, his eyes bleary with sleep. He takes one look at Eli and freezes, his face going pale.
"Eli?" he breathes, his voice barely above a whisper. "What are you doing here?"
Eli takes a step forward, his eyes locked on River's face. "I came to see you," he says, his voice cracking slightly. "I heard about Cassidy's surgery and I... I wanted to be here for you."
River stares at him, his expression unreadable. For a long moment, no one moves or speaks, the air thick with tension and unspoken words. Cassidy can feel their heart pounding in their chest, their mind racing with questions. What is Eli doing here? Why now, after all these years?
Finally, River seems to snap out of his daze. He steps aside, holding the door open wider. "Come in," he says, his voice flat and emotionless. "We can talk inside."
Eli nods, stepping past River into the apartment. Cassidy and Morgan exchange a worried glance before following suit, closing the door behind them with a soft click.
Inside, the apartment feels different, charged with a new kind of energy. Eli looks around, his eyes taking in the cozy living room, the mismatched furniture, the art supplies scattered across the coffee table. He looks out of place here, like a bull in a china shop.
"I like what you've done with the place," he says finally, his voice sounding forced and unnatural.
River doesn't respond, just stares at Eli with a guarded expression. Cassidy can see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands are clenched into fists at his sides. They want to go to him, to offer him some kind of comfort, but they don't know what to say or do.
Morgan seems to feel the same way, shifting her weight from foot to foot, her eyes darting between River and Eli. "I'm Morgan," she says suddenly, breaking the silence. "And you are...?"
Eli turns to her, a strained smile on his face. "Eli," he says, holding out a hand for her to shake. "I'm an old friend of River's."
Morgan raises an eyebrow, her expression skeptical. "An old friend, huh?" she says, shaking his hand briefly. "Funny, River's never mentioned you before."
River clears his throat, finally breaking his silence. "Morgan," he says, his voice low and warning.
Morgan just shrugs, an innocent look on her face. "What? I'm just saying."
Cassidy can't help but smile a little at that, despite the tension in the room. They love Morgan's boldness, her refusal to let anyone off the hook, even in the most awkward of situations.
