The Lavender Door
So when a knock sounds at the door, sharp and unexpected, Cassidy feels a sudden jolt of fear. Who could be knocking at this hour? They exchange a worried glance with Morgan, who has paused in her puttering, her brow furrowed in concern.
"I'll get it," Cassidy says, setting their sketchbook aside and pushing themselves to their feet. They pad over to the door, their heart pounding in their chest. They peer through the peephole, but the hallway outside is empty, nothing but the faded floral wallpaper and the worn carpet.
Cassidy frowns, a prickle of unease running down their spine. They reach for the doorknob, turning it slowly. The door swings open with a soft creak, revealing... nothing. The hallway is empty, no sign of whoever had knocked.
"Weird," Cassidy mutters, stepping out into the hallway and looking around. "Could have sworn I heard someone knock."
Morgan appears at their shoulder, her face a mask of confusion. "Everything okay?" she asks, her voice laced with concern.
Cassidy shrugs, turning back to the apartment. "I guess so. Probably just--"
But before they can finish their sentence, a figure steps out from the shadows at the end of the hallway. Cassidy's heart leaps into their throat, their hand flying to their chest. Morgan lets out a little yelp of surprise, jumping back a step.
The figure is a man, tall and broad-shouldered, with a mop of curly brown hair and a face that looks vaguely familiar. He's wearing a worn leather jacket and a pair of faded jeans, a backpack slung over one shoulder. He looks tired, like he's been traveling for a long time.
"River?" he calls out, his voice rough with disuse. "Are you here?"
Cassidy's eyes widen in recognition. They've seen pictures of this man before, in the old photo albums that River keeps hidden away in his closet. It's Eli, River's ex-partner, the one who broke his heart all those years ago.
Before they can say anything, before they can warn River or send Eli away, River appears in the doorway, his eyes bleary with sleep. He takes one look at Eli and freezes, his face going pale.
"Eli?" he breathes, his voice barely above a whisper. "What are you doing here?"
Eli takes a step forward, his eyes locked on River's face. "I came to see you," he says, his voice cracking slightly. "I heard about Cassidy's surgery and I... I wanted to be here for you."
River stares at him, his expression unreadable. For a long moment, no one moves or speaks, the air thick with tension and unspoken words. Cassidy can feel their heart pounding in their chest, their mind racing with questions. What is Eli doing here? Why now, after all these years?
Finally, River seems to snap out of his daze. He steps aside, holding the door open wider. "Come in," he says, his voice flat and emotionless. "We can talk inside."
Eli nods, stepping past River into the apartment. Cassidy and Morgan exchange a worried glance before following suit, closing the door behind them with a soft click.
Inside, the apartment feels different, charged with a new kind of energy. Eli looks around, his eyes taking in the cozy living room, the mismatched furniture, the art supplies scattered across the coffee table. He looks out of place here, like a bull in a china shop.
"I like what you've done with the place," he says finally, his voice sounding forced and unnatural.
River doesn't respond, just stares at Eli with a guarded expression. Cassidy can see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands are clenched into fists at his sides. They want to go to him, to offer him some kind of comfort, but they don't know what to say or do.
Morgan seems to feel the same way, shifting her weight from foot to foot, her eyes darting between River and Eli. "I'm Morgan," she says suddenly, breaking the silence. "And you are...?"
Eli turns to her, a strained smile on his face. "Eli," he says, holding out a hand for her to shake. "I'm an old friend of River's."
Morgan raises an eyebrow, her expression skeptical. "An old friend, huh?" she says, shaking his hand briefly. "Funny, River's never mentioned you before."
River clears his throat, finally breaking his silence. "Morgan," he says, his voice low and warning.
Morgan just shrugs, an innocent look on her face. "What? I'm just saying."
Cassidy can't help but smile a little at that, despite the tension in the room. They love Morgan's boldness, her refusal to let anyone off the hook, even in the most awkward of situations.
"Why don't we all sit down?" they suggest, gesturing towards the couch and armchairs scattered around the living room. "We can talk more comfortably that way."
River nods, moving towards his favorite armchair and sinking down into it with a sigh. Eli hesitates for a moment before perching on the edge of the couch, his backpack still slung over his shoulder. Cassidy and Morgan take the remaining seats, Cassidy in the other armchair and Morgan on the couch beside Eli.
Another awkward silence descends over the room, broken only by the soft ticking of the clock on the wall. Cassidy can feel the weight of Eli's presence, the way it seems to suck all the air out of the room. They don't know what to say or do, how to bridge the gap between the past and the present.
It's Eli who finally breaks the silence. "I'm sorry for just showing up like this," he says, his voice low and earnest. "I know it's been a long time and I... I didn't know how else to reach out."
River stares at him, his expression unreadable. "You could have called," he says, his voice flat. "Or emailed. Or texted. Or sent a carrier pigeon. Any of those would have been better than just showing up on my doorstep after five years of radio silence."
Eli flinches, his eyes dropping to his hands. "I know," he says, his voice rough with emotion. "I was a coward. I didn't know how to face you after everything that happened."
River doesn't respond, just stares at Eli with a stony expression. Cassidy can see the hurt in his eyes, the years of pain and rejection that are written on his face.
"I heard about Cassidy's surgery through the grapevine," Eli continues, his voice barely above a whisper. "I knew you'd be taking care of them and I... I wanted to be here for you. To help, if I can."
At the mention of their name, Cassidy feels their heart skip a beat. They didn't realize that Eli knew about their surgery, about the role that River has played in their recovery. It feels strange, to have this near-stranger so intimately aware of the details of their life.
"How did you hear about that?" Cassidy asks, their voice coming out sharper than they intended.
Eli looks up, meeting their gaze for the first time. "I kept in touch with a few people from the old crowd," he says, his voice gentle. "They mentioned it in passing. I hope that's okay."
Cassidy shrugs, looking away. They don't know how to feel about that, about the idea of strangers discussing their personal life behind their back.
River clears his throat again, drawing everyone's attention back to him. "I appreciate the thought," he says, his voice tight with emotion. "But I don't need your help. I've been doing just fine on my own."
Eli nods, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "I know," he says, his voice heavy with regret. "I can see that. You've built a good life for yourself here. A good family."
He looks around the room, his gaze landing on Cassidy and Morgan. "I'm happy for you," he says, his voice sincere. "Truly."
River stares at him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he nods. "Thank you," he says, his voice gruff.
Another silence descends over the room, less awkward this time, but no less heavy. Cassidy can feel the weight of the past pressing down on them, the ghosts of River and Eli's relationship lingering in the corners of the room.
Finally, Eli stands up, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. "I should go," he says, his voice quiet. "I didn't mean to intrude."
River stands up too, his expression conflicted. "Wait," he says, holding out a hand to stop Eli. "You just got here. You don't have to leave yet."
Eli looks at him, surprise written on his face. "Are you sure?" he asks, his voice hesitant.
River nods, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Yeah," he says, his voice soft. "Stay. We can... we can catch up. If you want."
Cassidy feels a warmth blooming in their chest at the sight of that smile, at the tentative hope that seems to be growing between River and Eli. They know it won't be easy, this path to reconciliation, but they can't help but root for their friend, for the chance at a new beginning.
