The Midnight Algorithm

Watching the sunrise with Leo, the city slowly waking below us, I feel a sense of peace settle over me. “This is nice,” I murmur. The first rays of sun filter through the windows, painting the room in warm, golden light.

Leo nods, his thumb tracing lazy circles on the back of my hand. “It is. I’ve always loved sunrises. There’s something… hopeful about them.”

I smile, leaning into his side. “I know what you mean. It’s like the world is hitting the reset button.”

He chuckles, the sound low in his chest. “I like the sound of that. A chance to start over. Together.”

I blush. “Charmer,” I accuse, my voice teasing.

He grins. “Only for you.” We lapse into silence again, content to watch the sky lighten. “It’s gorgeous,” I murmur.

Leo nods. “It is. But it’s got nothing on you.”

I blush. “Charmer,” I accuse.

He chuckles. “Only for you,” he counters, his lips brushing my temple.

I turn to face him, my free hand resting on his chest. “Thank you. For last night. For being here.”

He meets my gaze, his eyes serious. “I’ll always be here. I promise, Elara. I’m not going anywhere.”

I nod, my throat tight. “I know. I believe you.”

He smiles, his eyes crinkling. “Good.” He leans in, his lips finding mine in a tender kiss.

When he pulls back, I’m breathless. “We should get back. Before someone comes looking for us.”

He nods, his eyes dark. “Probably a good idea.” But neither of us moves. “Later,” he murmurs. “We’ll pick this up later.”

I nod. “Later.” Hand in hand, we make our way to the door. As we step into the hallway, I feel we’re stepping into a new chapter.

The walk back is quiet. We pause outside my door. “Elara,” he says, his voice low. I turn. His eyes are dark. “I meant what I said. I want this. I want *you*. Not just for tonight. I want to see where this goes.”

I swallow. “I want that too. I’m just… scared.”

He reaches for my hand. “You won’t lose yourself. I won’t let you. We’ll figure it out together.”

I nod. “I trust you. It’s just… this wasn’t part of the plan.”

He chuckles. “The best things never are. I’m not asking you to throw your plan away. I’m asking you to make room for me in it.”

My heart flutters. “I like the sound of that.”

He grins. “Good. Because I’m not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me now.”

I laugh. “I guess I am.” He pulls me into his arms, his lips finding mine.

When he pulls back, I’m breathless. “We should get some sleep,” I murmur.

He nods. “We do. But first…” He leans in. “I want you in my bed tonight.”

I shiver. “Okay. Your room.”

He smiles. “My room.” Hand in hand, we make our way down the hall. We tumble onto the bed, our bodies tangling. We make love slowly, savoring each touch.

Afterwards, we lie together. “Elara?” he murmurs.

“Hmm?”

He presses a tender kiss to my temple. “I’m glad you’re here.”

I smile. “I’m glad I’m here too.” And as I drift off, I know this is just the beginning.

The conference is a whirlwind of handshakes and presentations, a blur of faces and names that pass by in a dizzying rush. But through it all, Leo is there, a steady presence at my side, his hand warm and sure in mine.

We navigate the curious glances and whispered speculations with our heads held high, presenting a united front to the world. Our professional collaboration is stronger than ever, our ideas flowing together seamlessly, each of us playing off the other’s strengths in a way that feels effortless, intuitive.

But it’s in the quiet moments that I feel the true weight of our connection, the depth of what we’ve found. The shared glances across a crowded room, the brush of his hand against mine as we pass in the hallway, the way his eyes light up when he sees me, like I’m the best thing in his world.

So when he tugs me into a quiet corner, his eyes dancing with mischief, and whispers, “Come with me,” I don’t hesitate. I let him lead me through the winding halls, down to the hotel lobby, and out into the bright afternoon sun.

We walk in comfortable silence, the city bustling around us, until we reach a small, unassuming café tucked away on a quiet side street. The same café where we first clashed, all those months ago.

He holds the door open for me, his smile soft and tender, and I step inside, my heart full to bursting. The café is just as I remember, cozy and inviting, the air rich with the scent of fresh-brewed coffee and baked goods.

We find a table by the window, the afternoon sun filtering in through the glass, casting everything in a warm, golden glow. Leo pulls out my chair for me, ever the gentleman, and I sit, my eyes never leaving his.

“This place,” I murmur, my voice soft with wonder. “It’s like coming full circle.”

He nods, his lips quirking in a wry smile. “It is,” he agrees, his voice just as soft. “But this time, we’re on the same side.”

I laugh, the sound bright and carefree, and reach across the table to lace our fingers together. “We are,” I agree, my voice warm with affection. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

He brings our joined hands to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to my knuckles. “Neither would I,” he murmurs, his eyes locked on mine. “You’re stuck with me now, Elara Vance.”

I smile, my heart full to bursting. “I guess I am,” I agree, my voice light with teasing. “Lucky me.”

He grins, wide and bright, and for a moment, I’m dazzled by the sheer force of his joy. “Lucky us,” he counters, his voice warm with satisfaction.

We lapse into silence again, content to simply be together, to bask in the warmth of our connection. And as I look at him, at this man who has become my partner, my lover, my friend, I know, with a certainty that settles deep in my bones, that this is just the beginning. That whatever challenges lie ahead, whatever obstacles we’ll face, we’ll face them together. Because that’s what you do when you find your person. You hold on tight, and you never let go.

And as the sun sets over the city, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, I know that I’ve found mine. My person. My partner. My love.

Leo Sterling. The man who stole my heart, one sunrise at a time.
