The Midnight Algorithm

He nods, his eyes dark with a matching hunger. “We do,” he agrees, his voice rough with restraint. “But first…” He leans in, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. “I want you in my bed tonight. I want to wake up with you in my arms.”

I shiver, a delicious thrill running down my spine at his words. “Okay,” I breathe, my voice barely more than a whisper. “Okay. Your room.”

He smiles, slow and wicked, and I feel my knees go weak. “My room,” he agrees, his voice a low purr in his chest.

Hand in hand, we make our way down the hall, our steps light and eager. As we step into his room, I can’t help but feel like we’re stepping into a new chapter, one that’s full of possibility and potential. It’s terrifying and exhilarating all at once, and I know, deep in my bones, that whatever happens next, I want Leo by my side.

We tumble onto the bed, our bodies tangling together, our lips meeting in a searing kiss. We make love slowly this time, savoring each touch, each caress, each whispered word of affection. It’s different than before, less frantic, more deliberate. Like we’re mapping each other’s bodies, learning each other’s rhythms, committing each other to memory.

Afterwards, we lie together in the dark, our bodies still joined, our breathing slow and even. Leo’s hand is tracing lazy patterns on my back, his touch warm and soothing, and I feel my eyes grow heavy, my body limp and sated.

“Elara?” he murmurs, his voice soft and drowsy.

“Hmm?” I hum, my voice sleepy and content.

He presses a tender kiss to my temple, his lips lingering on my skin. “I’m glad you’re here,” he says simply, his voice rough with emotion.

I smile, my heart full to bursting. “I’m glad I’m here too,” I murmur, my voice just as soft.

And as I drift off to sleep in his arms, I know, with a certainty that settles deep in my bones, that this is just the beginning. That whatever challenges lie ahead, whatever obstacles we’ll face, we’ll face them together. Because that’s what you do when you find your person. You hold on tight, and you never let go.

The sun is high in the sky when I wake, the room flooded with warm, golden light. I blink my eyes open, disoriented for a moment, before the events of the night come rushing back. The blackout, the conversation, the mind-blowing sex, the heartfelt promises.

I turn my head, expecting to find Leo beside me, but the bed is empty, the sheets cool to the touch. I frown, a flicker of unease sparking in my chest. “Leo?” I call, my voice rough with sleep.

“I’m here,” he calls back, his voice coming from the direction of the bathroom. A moment later, he appears in the doorway, a towel slung low around his hips, his hair damp and tousled from the shower.

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding, the tension draining from my body. “Hey,” I say, my voice soft with relief.

He smiles, crossing the room to sit on the edge of the bed. “Hey yourself,” he murmurs, leaning in to press a tender kiss to my lips. “Sleep well?”

I nod, stretching languidly, the sheets slipping down to pool at my waist. “Like a log,” I confirm, my voice warm with satisfaction. “You?”

He chuckles, the sound low and rich in his chest. “Like a rock,” he agrees, his eyes darkening as they trail over my bare skin. “Though I could be persuaded to go for round two, if you’re up for it.”

I laugh, the sound bright and carefree, and shake my head. “Tempting,” I say, my voice teasing. “But we’ve got a conference to attend, remember?”

He heaves a theatrical sigh, his shoulders slumping in defeat. “Duty calls,” he agrees, his voice wry. “But later… later, you’re mine.”

I shiver, a delicious thrill running down my spine at his words. “Later,” I agree, my voice just as soft.

We get dressed in companionable silence, the air between us still thick with the weight of our newfound connection. As I smooth down the front of my dress, I catch Leo’s eye in the mirror, and the look on his face steals my breath. It’s tender and possessive and full of affection, and I feel my heart swell in my chest.

“You look beautiful,” he murmurs, crossing the room to stand behind me. His hands come to rest on my hips, his touch warm and sure, and I lean back into his embrace, savoring his strength.

“Thank you,” I say, my voice soft with emotion. I meet his gaze in the mirror, my eyes searching his. “Are you ready for this?”

He nods, his grip on my hips tightening just a fraction. “I’m ready,” he says, his voice firm with conviction. “Together, remember?”

I smile, my heart full to bursting. “Together,” I agree.

Hand in hand, we step out into the hallway, ready to face whatever the day brings. Ready to face the future, come what may.

Watching the sunrise with Leo, the city slowly waking below us, I feel a sense of peace settle over me, a quiet certainty that whatever comes next, we’ll face it together.

“This is nice,” I murmur, my voice hushed in the quiet room. The first rays of sun filter through the windows, painting the room in warm, golden light. It feels like a new beginning, a fresh start, and I can’t help but feel hopeful, despite the challenges that lie ahead.

Leo nods, his thumb tracing lazy circles on the back of my hand. “It is,” he agrees, his voice just as soft. “I’ve always loved sunrises. There’s something… hopeful about them. Like anything is possible.”

I smile, leaning into his side. “I know what you mean,” I say, my voice warm with affection. “It’s like the world is hitting the reset button, giving us a chance to start over.”

He chuckles, the sound low and rich in his chest. “I like the sound of that,” he murmurs, pressing a tender kiss to my temple. “A chance to start over. Together.”

I blush, ducking my head to hide my smile. “Charmer,” I accuse, my voice teasing, but there’s no real heat behind it. I like this side of him, this sweet, affectionate side that he keeps hidden behind his cocky exterior.

He grins, unrepentant. “Only for you,” he counters, his lips brushing my ear.

We lapse into silence again, content to watch the sky lighten degree by degree. The city is still dark, the only light the faint glow of the moon reflecting off the buildings, but as the sun creeps higher, casting the room in a warm, golden glow, I feel a sense of calm wash over me, a quiet certainty that whatever comes next, we’ll face it together.

“It’s gorgeous,” I murmur, my voice hushed in the quiet room.

Leo nods, his thumb tracing circles on the back of my hand. “It is,” he agrees, his voice just as soft. “But it’s got nothing on you.”

I blush, ducking my head to hide my smile. “Charmer,” I accuse, my voice teasing.

He chuckles, the sound low and rich in his chest. “Only for you,” he counters, his lips brushing my temple.

I turn to face him, my free hand coming up to rest on his chest. “Thank you,” I say, my voice soft with emotion. “For last night. For… for being here.”

He meets my gaze, his eyes serious in the early morning light. “I’ll always be here,” he says, his voice firm with conviction. “I promise, Elara. Whatever happens, whatever challenges we face, I’m not going anywhere.”

I nod, my throat tight with emotion. “I know,” I say, my voice hoarse. “I believe you.”

He smiles, his eyes crinkling at the corners, and for a moment, I forget to breathe. “Good,” he says, his voice warm with affection.

He leans in, his lips finding mine in a kiss that’s sweet and tender and full of promise. It’s a kiss that says “I’m here,” and “We’ll figure this out,” and “You’re not alone.” It’s a kiss that makes my heart race and my toes curl, even as it soothes the worry that’s been gnawing at my gut.

When he pulls back, I’m breathless and flushed, my body humming with renewed desire. “We should get back,” I murmur, my voice husky with want. “Before someone comes looking for us.”

He nods, his eyes dark with a matching hunger. “Probably a good idea,” he agrees, his voice rough with restraint.

But neither of us makes a move to leave. Instead, we stand there a moment longer, our bodies swaying closer, our lips meeting in one last, lingering kiss.
