The Pitch That Binds

Elise, to her credit, remained the consummate professional, her focus never wavering from the task at hand. She had introduced a new treatment protocol—a combination of deep tissue massage, targeted exercises, and cutting-edge technology that seemed to be working wonders on his shoulder. Slowly but surely, he could feel his strength returning, the pain receding like a tide.

“You’re doing remarkably well, Alex,” she said one afternoon as they finished up a session. “Your range of motion is almost back to normal, and your strength is improving every day.”

He grinned, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. “I had a good teacher.”

Elise smiled, a rare, genuine smile that lit up her face and made his heart skip a beat. “You’re the one putting in the work,” she said, her voice soft. “I’m just guiding you.”

He wanted to reach for her, to pull her into his arms and kiss her until they were both breathless, but he held himself back. They couldn’t afford to be careless, not with so much at stake.

As if on cue, Coach Thompson’s voice echoed through the training room, shattering the moment like glass. “Rivera! My office. Now.”

Alex’s stomach dropped, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in his gut. He glanced at Elise, seeing the same flicker of unease in her eyes, before turning to face his coach.

“What’s this about, Coach?” he asked, following the older man down the hallway to his office.

“I’ll tell you what it’s about,” Coach Thompson said, his voice tight with barely suppressed anger. “It’s about the fact that you’ve been making remarkable progress in your recovery, and yet I’m only just now hearing about it.”

Alex frowned, confusion washing over him. “I don’t understand. Elise has been giving you regular updates—”

“Not good enough,” Coach Thompson snapped, cutting him off. “I want to see for myself. I want to know exactly what kind of treatments she’s been using, and I want to know why I wasn’t informed of these new methods from the start.”

Alex’s heart sank, realization dawning on him like a cold, hard truth. The coach’s suspicions had been raised, and now he was determined to get to the bottom of things—no matter the cost.

“I’m sure Elise can provide you with all the information you need,” he said carefully, trying to keep his voice steady. “She’s been working tirelessly to get me back in fighting shape.”

“Oh, I have no doubt about that,” Coach Thompson said, his eyes narrowing. “But I also know that Dr. Grant has a reputation for being unconventional in her methods. I need to be sure that what she’s doing is in the best interest of the team—and your career.”

Alex swallowed hard, his mind racing. He knew that Elise’s techniques were sound, that she would never do anything to jeopardize his recovery, but he also knew that the coach’s scrutiny could expose their secret. If Thompson dug too deep, if he asked too many questions, he might uncover the truth about what had happened between them.

“I trust her, Coach,” he said, his voice firm. “I trust her completely.”

Coach Thompson’s expression softened slightly, a flicker of something like understanding crossing his face. “I know you do, son,” he said, clapping a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “And I trust you. But I also have a responsibility to this team, and I can’t afford to take any chances. Not with the playoffs coming up.”

Alex nodded, his throat tight. “I understand.”

“Good,” Coach Thompson said. “Then you’ll understand why I’m assigning Dr. Grant to work with Jacobs for the next few weeks. I need to see how her methods work with another player before I make any decisions about your comeback.”

Alex’s heart stopped, a wave of cold dread washing over him. Jacobs was the team’s star quarterback, a rival of sorts, and the thought of Elise working with him—of her hands on his body, her attention focused on someone else—made his blood run cold.

“But Coach—” he started to protest, but Thompson cut him off with a sharp gesture.

“It’s not up for discussion, Alex,” he said, his tone brooking no argument. “I need to know that Dr. Grant’s methods are effective across the board, and I need to be sure that there’s no favoritism at play here.”

Alex’s jaw clenched, anger and frustration boiling up inside him. He wanted to argue, to tell the coach that he was making a mistake, but he knew it would be pointless. Thompson had made up his mind, and there was nothing Alex could do to change it.

He nodded stiffly, turning on his heel and stalking out of the office without another word. His mind was reeling, a million thoughts racing through his head. How was he supposed to focus on his recovery without Elise by his side? How was he supposed to pretend that everything was normal, that his heart wasn’t breaking at the thought of her with someone else?

He found Elise in the training room, her expression strained as she packed up her equipment. She looked up as he approached, her eyes wide and troubled.

“Alex,” she started, but he cut her off, pulling her into a fierce, desperate kiss. She melted into his embrace, her arms wrapping around his neck as she kissed him back with equal fervor.

When they finally broke apart, they were both breathless, their foreheads pressed together as they fought to regain their composure.

“We’ll figure this out,” Elise whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “I’ll work with Jacobs, but I’ll still be here for you. We’ll find a way.”

Alex nodded, his heart aching in his chest. He wanted to believe her, wanted to trust that they could weather this storm, but the doubt was there, insidious and cold. What if the coach’s suspicions were justified? What if their relationship really was putting his career at risk?

He pushed the thoughts aside, forcing himself to focus on the present. They had come too far to give up now, and he knew that Elise would never do anything to hurt him. They would find a way to be together, no matter what it took.

But as he watched her walk away, her shoulders squared and her head held high, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.

[PART 4 END]

[PART 5 START]

Over the next few weeks, Alex and Elise navigated the treacherous waters of their secret relationship with a desperate kind of caution. Stolen moments in the locker room became their lifeline—furtive kisses in the shadows, whispered confessions in the dark. They communicated in glances and touches, in the brush of fingers against skin, in the heat of shared breath.

It was during one such encounter that Alex suggested the weekend getaway. They were in the locker room after hours, the facility silent and still around them. Elise was checking the mobility of his shoulder, her hands warm and sure against his skin.

“We could go away,” he murmured, his voice low and rough with wanting. “Just for a couple of days. Somewhere no one knows us.”

Elise hesitated, her eyes flicking up to meet his. “Alex, I don’t know—”

“Please,” he said, cutting her off. “I need this. I need you.”

She sighed, her expression softening. “Okay,” she whispered. “Okay, let’s do it.”

They chose a small, secluded cabin in the mountains, a place where they could be alone together without fear of discovery. The drive up was tense and quiet, the weight of what they were doing heavy in the air between them. But once they arrived, once they stepped across the threshold and into the warm, wood-paneled interior, all of that fell away.

They came together in a frenzy of pent-up desire, their bodies crashing together like waves against the shore. They made love in front of the fireplace, the flames casting dancing shadows across their skin. They explored every inch of each other, hands and mouths mapping the contours of flesh and bone, until they were spent and sated, wrapped in each other’s arms.

It was a moment of perfect peace, a respite from the chaos of their lives. But it was fleeting, as all such moments are. All too soon, they had to return to reality, to the demands of the team and the expectations of others.

The first practice session back was a disaster. Alex’s shoulder, which had been responding so well to Elise’s treatments, suddenly seized up mid-throw. Pain exploded through his joint, hot and sharp, and he stumbled, the ball flying wildly out of his grip.

“Rivera!” Coach Thompson barked, his voice cutting through the sudden silence. “What the hell was that?”

Alex gritted his teeth, his jaw clenched tight against the agony. “It’s nothing, Coach,” he ground out. “Just a twinge.”

But it wasn’t nothing. He could see it in the way Elise’s eyes widened, in the way she hurried over to his side, her hands already reaching for his shoulder.
