The Prince's Librarian

Elara, for her part, seemed content to let him brood, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. It wasn't until they stopped for the night that she finally spoke her mind.

"You care for him, don't you?" she said, settling down beside the small fire Theron had built. "The dragon."

Theron glanced at her, surprised by her perceptiveness. "Is it that obvious?" he asked wryly.

Elara chuckled. "To anyone with eyes, yes. The way you look at him, the way he looks at you... it's clear there's something between you."

Theron sighed, poking at the fire with a stick. "It doesn't matter. My father would never approve. The court, the people... they'd never understand."

"Perhaps not," Elara conceded. "But that doesn't mean you can't find a way to make it work."

Theron looked at her, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "What do you mean?"

Elara shrugged. "You're the crown prince, Theron. You have more power than you realize. If you truly care for Archibald, find a way to balance your duties with your heart's desire."

Theron mulled over her words for a long moment, the idea taking root in his mind. "I suppose I could visit him from time to time," he said slowly. "Sneak away when my duties allow."

Elara nodded. "It wouldn't be easy, but it's better than giving up entirely."

Theron smiled, the first genuine smile he'd managed since leaving the library. "Thank you, Elara. I don't know what I'd do without you."

The mage reached out, patting his hand. "That's what friends are for, Your Highness."

They settled into a comfortable silence after that, the crackling of the fire and the chirping of crickets the only sounds in the still night air. Theron's thoughts were still with Archibald, but now they were tinged with a new determination. He would find a way to make this work. He had to.

The next few days passed in a blur of travel, Theron pushing himself and his horse to the limits in his eagerness to return to Eldoria and set his plan into motion. When the spires of the castle finally came into view, Theron felt a mix of relief and trepidation wash over him.

His father was waiting for him in the throne room, his expression stern and unyielding. Theron approached the dais, bowing low before the king.

"Father," he said, his voice steady. "I've returned, as you commanded."

The king regarded him for a long moment, his eyes hard. "You've been gone for weeks, Theron, with no word of your whereabouts. Do you have any idea the worry you caused?"

Theron bowed his head, a flicker of guilt passing through him. "I apologize, Father. I... I needed some time away. Time to think."

The king's expression softened slightly. "I understand, son. But you cannot simply disappear like that. You are the crown prince. Your people need you."

"I know," Theron said, meeting his father's gaze. "And I am prepared to take on my duties, as I should have from the start."

The king nodded, a hint of pride in his eyes. "Good. We'll speak more of this later. For now, go and rest. You look exhausted."

Theron bowed again, grateful for the reprieve. "Thank you, Father."

As he turned to leave, his father's voice stopped him. "Theron."

He glanced back, raising an eyebrow in question.

"Whatever it is you found out there, whatever peace you discovered... hold onto it," the king said, his voice gruff with emotion. "But never forget where your true duty lies."

Theron hesitated, a dozen responses on the tip of his tongue. In the end, he simply nodded, turning and striding from the room without another word.

He made his way to his chambers, his mind whirling with plans and possibilities. He would be the prince his people needed, the prince his father wanted him to be. But he would also be true to himself, to his heart.

And he would find a way to be with Archibald, no matter what it took.

The next few weeks were a challenge, as Theron threw himself into his royal duties with a renewed sense of purpose. He attended every council meeting, every diplomatic function, every social event. He studied the laws and customs of Eldoria, learning the intricacies of governance from his father and the other advisors.

But through it all, his thoughts never strayed far from Archibald and the promise of the dragon's library. He wrote letters to the dragon, describing his days and his hopes for the future. Archibald's replies were always filled with warmth and encouragement, a reminder that Theron was never truly alone.

When he could, Theron stole away to the library, losing himself in the familiar comfort of books and knowledge. He and Archibald would talk for hours, their conversations a lifeline in the midst of Theron's hectic life.

"I miss you," Theron confessed one evening, his voice soft with emotion. "More than I ever thought possible."

Archibald's chuckle rumbled through the connection between them. "And I you, little prince. The library feels empty without your presence."

Theron smiled, a warmth spreading through his chest. "I'll come visit as soon as I'm able. I promise."

"I know you will," Archibald said, his voice filled with affection. "Until then, know that you are always in my thoughts."

Theron clung to those words in the days that followed, a reminder of what he was fighting for. He knew the path ahead wouldn't be easy, but with Archibald by his side, he felt like he could face anything.

One evening, as he sat in his chambers poring over a particularly dense tome on Eldorian history, a knock sounded at his door. Theron looked up, blinking in surprise as Elara stepped into the room.

"Elara," he said, setting the book aside. "What brings you here?"

The mage smiled, a mischievous glint in her eye. "I have a proposition for you, Your Highness."

Theron raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. "Oh? And what might that be?"

Elara stepped closer, her expression turning serious. "I've been thinking about your predicament, Theron. About your desire to be with Archibald and your duty to the kingdom."

Theron's heart leapt into his throat, his eyes widening in surprise. "You have?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Elara nodded. "I have. And I think I may have a solution."

Theron leaned forward, his hands gripping the arms of his chair. "Tell me."

Elara took a deep breath, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "What if we were to establish a royal library, here in Eldoria? A place where knowledge from all over the realm could be collected and preserved. And what if that library were to have a... special collection, one that required a dragon's expertise to maintain?"

Theron stared at her, his mind racing as he processed her words. "You mean... Archibald could come here? To Eldoria?"

Elara nodded, a grin spreading across her face. "Exactly. As the royal librarian, he would have a legitimate reason to be here, to be close to you. And you could visit him as often as you liked, under the guise of overseeing the library's progress."

Theron surged to his feet, his heart pounding with excitement. "Elara, that's brilliant!"

The mage laughed, shaking her head. "I don't know about brilliant, but it's certainly worth a try."

Theron grabbed her hands, squeezing them tight. "Thank you, Elara. Thank you for this."

Elara squeezed back, her expression warm. "You deserve to be happy, Theron. If I can help with that, even in a small way, then I'll do whatever I can."

Theron nodded, a lump forming in his throat. "I'll speak to my father tomorrow, see if he'll approve the project."

"And I'll start drafting the plans for the library," Elara said, a determined glint in her eye. "We'll make this work, Theron. I promise."

As Elara left, Theron sank back into his chair, his mind whirling with possibilities. For the first time since returning to Eldoria, he felt a sense of hope, a belief that he could have the life he wanted, the life he deserved.

He picked up a fresh piece of parchment, his quill scratching across the page as he began to write.

"My dearest Archibald," he began, a smile tugging at his lips. "I have the most wonderful news..."

The next few weeks were a whirlwind of activity as Theron and Elara worked tirelessly to bring their plan to fruition. Theron spoke with his father, carefully outlining the benefits of a royal library and how it would bring prestige to Eldoria. The king was skeptical at first, but Theron's passion and dedication eventually won him over.
