The Saltwater Letters
“Secrets are my specialty,” I say, a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. “After all, every archivist loves a good puzzle.”
Finn’s eyes spark with amusement. “Then you’ll fit right in here, Elara Vance. Seabrook is full of puzzles waiting to be solved.”
As if on cue, Inkwell leaps onto the desk again, batting at a stray envelope with his paw. The name *Leo* is scrawled across it in Silas’s distinctive handwriting. I reach for it, my heart quickening with anticipation.
“What’s that?” Finn asks, his voice suddenly sharp.
I glance up at him, surprised by his tone. “Just another letter. Why do you ask?”
But before he can answer, the door opens again, and a man steps inside, his dark hair tousled by the wind. He’s holding a stack of books, his eyes narrowing as they land on Finn.
“Finn,” he says, his voice cool. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Finn’s jaw tightens, and he takes a step back from the desk. “Leo. I was just welcoming Elara to town.”
Leo’s gaze shifts to me, his expression guarded. “Elara. I’m Leo Hayes. I own the bookstore in town.” He sets the books down on a nearby table, his movements precise and controlled. “I brought these over for you. Silas mentioned you might be interested in some local history.”
“Thank you,” I say, reaching for the top book. As I do, my fingers brush against his, and a jolt of electricity shoots up my arm. I pull back, flustered, and Leo’s eyes darken.
Finn clears his throat, breaking the sudden tension. “Well, I should be going. Elara, it was nice to meet you. I’m sure I’ll see you around town.”
He nods to Leo, his expression unreadable, before slipping out the door. Leo watches him go, his shoulders stiff.
“Finn and I have a… complicated history,” he says, turning back to me. “I’m sure you’ll hear all about it soon enough.”
I glance down at the letter addressed to Leo, my curiosity piqued. What secrets do these pages hold? And how are Finn and Leo connected to Silas Thorne’s hidden world?
As if sensing my thoughts, Inkwell hops onto my lap, his green eyes fixed on the letter in my hand. I take a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest.
“Ready to uncover some secrets, Inkwell?” I murmur, my fingers trembling slightly as I break the seal.
The scent of lavender rises from the page once more, and I begin to read, the words drawing me deeper into the mystery of Seabrook and its inhabitants.
The scent of lavender rises from the page once more, and I begin to read, the words drawing me deeper into the mystery of Seabrook and its inhabitants.
*My dearest L,* the letter begins, the ink a deep blue against the creamy paper. *I can still feel the warmth of your skin against mine, the taste of salt on your lips. That night on the beach, with the stars as our only witnesses… it haunts my dreams. When will you come back to me?*
My breath catches in my throat, the intimacy of the words sending a shiver down my spine. This is no ordinary correspondence – this is a love letter, raw and aching with longing. I glance up at Leo, who’s watching me with an inscrutable expression, his dark eyes guarded.
“There are more,” he says quietly, nodding towards the box on the desk. “Silas and I… we had a complicated relationship.”
I swallow hard, my mind racing with questions. What exactly was the nature of their relationship? And how does Finn fit into all of this? I reach for another letter, my fingers trembling slightly as I unfold it.
*Finn thinks he knows the truth,* Silas’s elegant script reads, *but he has no idea the depths of what we shared. He’s always been jealous of our connection, even if he’d never admit it.*
My heart pounds in my chest as I look up at Leo, the pieces starting to fall into place. “You and Silas… you were lovers?”
Leo’s jaw tightens, and he looks away, his gaze fixed on the fading light outside the window. “It’s not that simple,” he says, his voice rough with emotion. “Silas was… he was everything to me. But Finn…”
He trails off, shaking his head, and I feel a pang of sympathy for him. Whatever happened between the three of them, it’s clear that the wounds are still raw.
Before I can press him further, the door bursts open, and Finn strides in, his face flushed with anger. “I knew you’d be here,” he snaps, his eyes narrowing as he takes in the scene – Leo and I, the letters scattered across the desk. “Couldn’t wait to dig up the past, could you?”
Leo stands up straighter, his shoulders squaring as he meets Finn’s gaze. “I’ve got nothing to hide,” he says, his voice cool and steady. “Unlike you.”
Finn’s fists clench at his sides, and for a moment, I’m afraid he might lunge at Leo. But he takes a deep breath, visibly restraining himself. “You think you know everything, don’t you?” he says, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “You think you and Silas had some great love affair. But you don’t know the half of it.”
Leo’s eyes flash with anger, and he takes a step towards Finn. “And whose fault is that?” he asks, his voice rising. “You’re the one who left, Finn. You’re the one who ran away when things got too real.”
Finn’s face contorts with pain, and he looks away, his jaw working as he struggles to find the words. “I had my reasons,” he says finally, his voice barely above a whisper.
But Leo isn’t satisfied. “What reasons?” he demands, his voice cracking with emotion. “What could possibly be more important than what we had?”
The air is thick with tension, the weight of years of unspoken words and unresolved feelings pressing down on us. I feel like an intruder, a voyeur witnessing a private moment that was never meant for my eyes. But I can’t look away, can’t tear my gaze from the two men before me, their pain and longing laid bare.
Inkwell, sensing the charged atmosphere, hops down from my lap and winds around my ankles, his soft fur brushing against my skin. I reach down to stroke his back, taking comfort in his warm, solid presence.
“I think you should both leave,” I say quietly, my voice cutting through the heavy silence. “This is… this is too much.”
Finn and Leo both turn to look at me, as if only just remembering that I’m there. Finn’s expression softens slightly, and he takes a step towards me. “Elara, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to drag you into this.”
But Leo isn’t so easily appeased. “No,” he says, his voice hard. “She deserves to know the truth. She deserves to know what kind of man Silas really was.”
I shake my head, holding up a hand to stop him. “No,” I say firmly. “This is between the two of you. I’m here to do a job, not to get caught in the middle of your personal drama.”
Finn and Leo exchange a long, charged look, the air crackling with unspoken tension. Finally, Finn nods, his shoulders slumping in defeat. “Fine,” he says, his voice flat. “We’ll go. But this isn’t over, Leo.”
He turns on his heel and strides out the door, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the stillness. Leo watches him go, his expression unreadable, before turning back to me.
“I’m sorry,” he says, his voice rough with emotion. “I shouldn’t have come here. I shouldn’t have involved you in this.”
I shake my head, my mind still reeling from everything I’ve learned. “It’s okay,” I say, my voice shaky. “I just… I need some time to process all of this.”
Leo nods, his eyes filled with a deep, aching sadness. “Take all the time you need,” he says softly. “And if you ever want to talk… you know where to find me.”
With that, he turns and walks out the door, leaving me alone with Inkwell and the weight of a thousand unspoken secrets. I sink down into the chair behind the desk, my legs suddenly weak, and stare at the letters scattered before me.
“What have I gotten myself into, Inkwell?” I murmur, reaching down to stroke his soft fur. He purrs loudly, leaning into my touch, and I take a deep, shuddering breath.
The truth is out there, waiting to be uncovered. But as I look at the letters, with their promises of love and heartbreak, I can’t help but wonder if some secrets are better left buried.
The weight of the letters seems to press down on me, the scent of lavender and dust thick in the air. Inkwell hops up onto the desk, his green eyes fixed on me, as if sensing my turmoil.
