The Sea Prince's Bargain

The salt-sting of the sea hangs heavy in the air as I stand on the deck of the *Moonpetal*, the polished wood slick beneath my boots. Finn, my sleek otter companion, weaves between my ankles, his dark eyes fixed on the churning waves. I run a thumb over the ridge of the pearl in my palm – the Sea Opal, its iridescent sheen pulsing like a captured heartbeat. This is the prize that will change everything. The bargaining chip to free my sister from the Sky Queen’s clutches.

"Easy, Finn," I murmur, my voice almost lost beneath the crash of the surf against the ship’s hull. "We’ll be ashore soon." He chirps, a sound like pebbles tumbling in a brook, and nudges my calf with his wet nose.

The coastline of the Sea Court rises before us, a shimmering expanse of coral spires and pearlescent towers that seem to breathe with the tide. It’s beautiful, but beauty is often a trap. I’ve learned that lesson too well in my twenty-three years.

A figure emerges from the waves, water cascading off his broad shoulders. Prince Aris. He’s exactly as the whispers described – ageless, ethereal, with eyes the green of storm-tossed kelp and hair like spun midnight. Power radiates from him, cold and ancient, the magic of the deeps woven into his very being. He moves with the fluid grace of the sea itself, and as he steps onto the deck, the *Moonpetal* groans softly, yielding to his presence.

"Kael the Bargainer," he says, his voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. "You dare much, sailing into my domain uninvited."

I incline my head, not quite a bow. Respect, but not submission. "Prince Aris," I reply, my tone steady despite the tremor in my veins. "I come with an offer. One that will benefit us both." I extend my hand, the Sea Opal cradled in my palm. It glows faintly, casting shifting blue-green shadows across the deck.

Aris’s gaze sharpens, his eyes narrowing on the pearl. "The Sea Opal," he breathes, and for a moment, I see hunger in the depths of his gaze. Then his expression hardens, his mouth thinning into a cold line. "That jewel was stolen from my treasury."

My pulse quickens. "I acquired it fairly," I counter, my fingers closing protectively around the gem. "I offer it in exchange for your assistance. A trade."

"What assistance?" Aris’s voice is laced with suspicion. "Speak plainly, human."

I take a steadying breath. "My sister is imprisoned by the Sky Queen. Her freedom, in exchange for the Opal." It’s a bold request, but the Opal is a treasure beyond price, a source of immense magical power. Surely even a fae prince would see the value in the trade.

Aris goes very still, his eyes boring into mine. The air crackles with tension, and I feel Finn press closer to my leg, a silent support. "You admit you have the Opal," Aris says at last, his voice dangerously soft. "Stolen from my vaults. And you dare to offer it back to me as trade?"

"It wasn’t stolen," I insist, a flicker of anger sparking in my chest. "I won it in a bargain with one of your courtiers. A fair exchange."

"Liar." The word is a whip-crack, sharp and sudden. Aris’s hand shoots out, his fingers closing around my wrist like a vise. His touch is icy, burning my skin even as it sends a jolt through my body. "The Sea Opal was taken by trickery and deceit. And now you seek to profit from your crimes."

I try to pull away, but his grip is unyielding. "I’m no thief," I snarl, baring my teeth. "I had no part in any theft. I came here in good faith, seeking a trade."

"Good faith?" Aris’s laugh is a harsh, grating sound. "You humans are all the same. Greedy, grasping, willing to do anything for power." He leans in close, his breath warm against my cheek. "You will return the Opal, and you will face justice for your crimes."

Panic claws at my throat. This isn’t how it was supposed to go. I need the Opal, need the prince’s help. Without it, Lirelle will never be free. "Please," I say, hating the desperation in my voice. "My sister’s life hangs in the balance. I’ll give you the Opal, I’ll do anything—"

"Anything?" Aris’s smile is cold, predatory. "Very well, Kael the Bargainer. You will give me the Opal. And then you will face the consequences of your actions."

He releases my wrist, only to snap his fingers. Before I can react, tendrils of water surge from the sea, wrapping around my arms and legs like liquid chains. I struggle, but the bonds are impossibly strong, sapping my strength and my will. Finn hisses, darting forward as if to defend me, but a flick of Aris’s hand sends him tumbling back with a pained squeal.

"Take him to the palace," Aris commands, his voice ringing with authority. "And see that his pet is secured as well."

As the water drags me towards the railing, I lock eyes with the prince. His gaze is glacial, unforgiving, and in that moment, I know I’ve sealed my fate. The Sea Opal tumbles from my grasp, bouncing once on the deck before Aris scoops it up with a sweep of his hand. The last thing I see before the waves claim me is the cold, triumphant gleam in his eyes, and the knowledge that I’ve failed.

The water closes over my head, silencing my shout of rage and despair. I’m caught, captured, at the mercy of a fae prince who believes me a thief and a liar. My sister’s face flashes behind my eyes, and I vow silently that this is not the end. I will find a way out of this. I will make this right.

But as the depths swallow me whole, I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve dove headfirst into a trap of my own making – and that Prince Aris will be the least of my worries.

The water is a vise around my chest, squeezing the air from my lungs as I’m dragged deeper into the abyss. Pressure builds in my ears, a dull roar that muffles even the frantic hammering of my heart. I can’t see, can’t breathe, can only cling to the fading warmth of Finn’s body pressed against mine, a small anchor in the endless dark.

And then, just as spots begin to dance behind my eyes, the water parts. I’m dumped unceremoniously onto a floor of pearlescent tile, cool and smooth beneath my soaked clothes. I gasp, sucking in great lungfuls of air, my vision clearing slowly.

I’m in a chamber. Vast, domed, carved from what looks like a single piece of iridescent shell. Light filters down from above, dappling the walls with shifting patterns of blue and green. The air is cool, tinged with the scent of salt and ozone. And standing over me, his expression as impassive as the deeps, is Prince Aris.

"Rise, Kael the Bargainer," he says, his voice echoing strangely in the chamber. "You stand in the heart of the Sea Court. Your prison, until I decide your fate."

I push myself to my knees, my limbs trembling with exhaustion and fear. Finn stirs beside me, letting out a weak chirp of distress. "My sister," I rasp, my throat raw from swallowed seawater. "You have the Opal. Will you honor the trade?"

Aris’s lips thin. "You are in no position to bargain, human. Your fate rests in my hands now." He gestures sharply, and a pair of water elementals materialize beside me, their forms shifting and shimmering like heat haze. "Take him to the grotto. See that he is fed and guarded. I will deal with him later."

The elementals close in, their touch cool and impersonal as they haul me to my feet. I struggle instinctively, but my strength is spent, my magic drained by the ordeal and the sheer weight of the Sea Court’s power pressing down on me. Finn tries to dart after me, but Aris intercepts him, scooping him up with a surprising gentleness.

"The otter stays with me," he says, his eyes meeting mine. "A reminder of what you stand to lose."

I glare at him, hatred burning in my gut. "Harm him, and I’ll—"

"You’ll what?" Aris’s smile is razor-sharp. "You have no power here, Kael. No leverage. You are at my mercy, and I am not known for my mercy."

The elementals drag me away before I can retort, their grip unyielding. I catch a last glimpse of Finn, his dark eyes wide with fear, and then I’m plunged into a maze of coral corridors, the walls pulsing with a soft, bioluminescent glow.
