The Tidepool Promise

Riley grinned. “That’s really sweet. I always wished I had a sibling, but it was just me and my mom growing up.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What about your dad?”

Riley’s expression darkened slightly. “He was never really in the picture. He left when I was a baby, and I haven’t seen him since.”

“I’m sorry,” I said softly, reaching out to touch her hand again. “That must have been tough.”

Riley shrugged. “It was what it was, you know? My mom did her best to make up for it, but I always felt like I was missing out on something.”

I nodded sympathetically. “I can’t imagine what that must have been like.”

Riley smiled ruefully. “Well, it made me tough, that’s for sure. And it made me appreciate the people in my life who do stick around.” She looked at me meaningfully, and I felt my heart skip a beat.

I opened my mouth to respond, but just then, the waitress reappeared to ask if we wanted another round. Riley and I both nodded, and she disappeared again, leaving us alone once more.

“So, what about you?” I asked, trying to steer the conversation back to safer territory. “What are your hopes and dreams for the future?”

Riley leaned back in her chair, considering the question. “Well, I’d love to expand my business, take on more projects in town. Maybe even start flipping houses or building new ones from scratch.”

I grinned. “I have no doubt you could do it. You’re an amazing contractor.”

Riley smiled. “Thanks, Morgan. That means a lot.” She paused for a moment, then looked at me, her expression serious. “What about you? What do you see yourself doing in five years?”

I took a deep breath, thinking about the question. “Honestly, I’m not really sure. I know I want to make a success of the bookshop, to turn it into a real hub for the community. And I want to keep learning and growing as a person.” I met Riley’s gaze, my heart pounding. “And I want to keep exploring this…connection we have.”

Riley’s eyes widened, and I saw a flicker of surprise – and maybe a little fear – in their depths. “Morgan, I…”

I held up a hand, cutting her off. “I know, I know. We work together, and we don’t want to complicate things. But I can’t ignore the way I feel when I’m around you, Riley. I can’t pretend that there’s not something…more between us.”

Riley took a deep, shaky breath, her eyes never leaving mine. “I feel it, too,” she said softly. “But I’m scared, Morgan. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, and I don’t want to mess it up.”

I reached across the table and took her hand again, squeezing it gently. “I’m scared, too,” I admitted. “But I’m willing to take a chance if you are.”

We sat there for a long moment, the air between us crackling with tension. Then, slowly, Riley nodded. “Okay,” she whispered. “Let’s take a chance.”

I couldn’t help but grin, my heart soaring with happiness. I had no idea what the future held for us, but I knew that I wanted to face it with Riley by my side.

We finished our drinks and headed back to the bookshop, our hands brushing against each other as we walked. The sexual tension between us was thicker than ever, but we both held back, knowing that we needed to take things slow.

As we reached the door of the bookshop, Riley turned to me, her green eyes dark with desire. “Goodnight, Morgan,” she said, her voice low and husky.

I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest. “Goodnight, Riley.”

She leaned in close, and for a moment, I thought she was going to kiss me. But instead, she just brushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear, her fingers lingering on my skin. “Sweet dreams,” she whispered.

And then she was gone, disappearing into the night and leaving me standing there, my body thrumming with unfulfilled desire.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. I knew that something had shifted between us tonight, and there was no going back. I just hoped that we were ready for whatever came next.

The stars twinkled overhead, their light reflecting off the dark surface of the ocean.

The stars twinkled overhead, their light reflecting off the dark surface of the ocean. I stood there for a long moment, my heart racing and my skin tingling from Riley’s touch. I knew I should go inside, should try to get some sleep before another long day of renovations tomorrow. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to happen between us, something big and scary and wonderful.

Sure enough, just as I was about to turn and head inside, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. I whirled around to see Riley walking back towards me, a determined look on her face.

“Morgan, wait,” she said, her voice rough with emotion.

I blinked, surprised. “What is it? Did you forget something?”

Riley shook her head, never taking her eyes off mine. “No, I just…I couldn’t leave things like that. I couldn’t spend another night wondering ‘what if.’”

Before I could respond, she closed the distance between us and pulled me into her arms, crushing her lips against mine. I gasped in surprise, my body instantly responding to her touch. Her lips were soft and warm, and she tasted like tequila and lime and something uniquely Riley. I melted into her embrace, my arms wrapping around her neck as I kissed her back with everything I had.

We stood there like that for what felt like an eternity, our bodies pressed together, our tongues tangling in a passionate dance. I could feel the heat radiating from Riley’s skin, could hear the rapid thump of her heart against my chest. My own heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my ribcage.

Finally, we broke apart, both of us panting and flushed. Riley rested her forehead against mine, her green eyes dark with desire. “I’ve wanted to do that since the moment I met you,” she murmured.

I laughed breathlessly. “I’ve wanted you to do that since the moment I met you, too.”

Riley grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Well, then, what are we waiting for? Let’s take this inside.”

She took my hand and led me into the bookshop, closing and locking the door behind us. The space was dark and quiet, the only light coming from the moon filtering in through the windows. Riley pulled me towards the back room, where we’d set up a makeshift bed for me amidst the stacks of books and renovation supplies.

We tumbled down onto the mattress together, our hands already roaming over each other’s bodies. Riley’s fingers skimmed up my sides, pushing my sundress up around my waist and exposing the sensitive skin of my stomach. I shivered at her touch, my hips bucking involuntarily.

“Riley,” I gasped, my voice rough with need.

She cut me off with another searing kiss, her tongue plunging into my mouth and tangling with my own. I moaned into the kiss, my hands fisting in her hair and pulling her closer. I could feel the heat pooling between my legs, my body aching for more.

Riley broke the kiss, trailing her lips down my neck and along my collarbone. “You are so fucking beautiful, Morgan,” she murmured against my skin. “I’ve dreamed about this moment so many times.”

I shivered at her words, my body arching into her touch. “Please, Riley,” I whispered. “I need you.”

She grinned against my skin, her hands moving to the straps of my sundress and pushing them down my shoulders. The fabric fell away, exposing my bare breasts to the cool night air. Riley’s eyes widened at the sight, her pupils dilating with lust.

“Fuck,” she breathed, reaching out to cup my breasts in her hands. “You’re perfect.”

I moaned as she squeezed and kneaded the soft flesh, her thumbs brushing over my sensitive nipples. They hardened instantly, sending jolts of pleasure shooting through my body. Riley leaned down and took one into her mouth, sucking and licking until I was writhing beneath her.

I reached for the hem of her shirt, desperate to feel her skin against mine. She helped me pull it over her head, revealing her own bare breasts. They were small and pert, her nipples a dusky pink. I leaned up and took one into my mouth, swirling my tongue around the tight bud.

Riley gasped, her hands fisting in my hair. “Oh god, Morgan,” she moaned. “That feels so good.”

I smiled against her skin, loving the way she responded to my touch. I moved to her other nipple, giving it the same treatment until she was panting and trembling above me.
