The Velvet Pull
The velvet curtains rise. *Cue applause.* You’re standing stage right, watching Bram take his place center stage. His smile is electric, his voice smooth as aged whiskey as he welcomes the audience to *The Velvet Pull*. *God, he’s even hotter in person,* you think, palms sweating where they grip the worn velvet of the curtain. You volunteered on a whim – what bookish clerk wouldn’t be curious about hypnosis? – but now, watching him command the room, you feel wildly out of your depth.
“Ah, and here we have our volunteers!” Bram gestures to where you hover with four others. His gaze snags on yours – *shit, those eyes* – and he beckons you forward. “Let’s start with you, handsome. What’s your name?”
“L-Leo,” you stammer, stepping into the spotlight. The heat is intense. *Deep breaths. It’s just a show.*
“Leo,” Bram repeats, and the way your name sounds in his mouth sends a shiver down your spine. “Perfect. Now, Leo, I want you to focus on the sound of my voice. Every other sound – the rustle of programs, the shift of bodies in seats – is fading away. There’s only my voice and your breath.” *How does he do that?* you wonder, even as the world narrows to the rich cadence of his words. “Good. Now, I want you to imagine a silver cord stretching from the top of your head down your spine. With each breath, it pulls you deeper into yourself. Deeper into trance.”
You feel it – an actual physical sensation of being tugged downward. *Weird. So weird. But good.* Your eyelids flutter. “That’s right,” Bram murmurs, closer now. “Let your eyes close. Feel that silver cord anchoring you, pulling you down, down, down into a state of perfect peace, perfect obedience.” *Obedience?* your brain chirps in faint alarm, but it’s too late – you’re sinking, warm and heavy and *right*. “Deep asleep,” Bram says, and the words resonate through you like a bell. “Deep asleep and open to my voice.”
The next twenty minutes are the strangest of your life. Bram suggests the stage is a rowboat, and you grip the sides, crying out at imaginary waves. He tells you your shoe is a phone, and you have a frantic conversation with your own loafer. *This isn’t real,* you think dimly, *but it feels so real.* The world is bright and malleable as clay in Bram’s hands, and you – you are putty. When he wakes you, clapping you gently on the shoulder, you blink into the lights feeling like you’ve surfaced from a deep, dreamless sleep. “How do you feel, Leo?” Bram asks, his expression unreadable. “Amazing,” you blurt without thinking, and the audience laughs. *Did I just say that?* “I mean – thank you. That was… wow.” *Smooth, Leo. Real smooth.*
After the show, you’re gathering your jacket when a hand lands on your shoulder. “Leo, right?” Bram says, and your heart stutters. “I wanted to thank you for being such an excellent subject. You have a remarkable natural talent for trance.” *Me? Talented?* “I don’t know about that,” you mumble, face hot. Bram smiles, and it’s like the sun coming out. “I do. In fact, I’d love to explore that further, if you’re interested. A private session. My studio’s just upstairs.” He holds out a business card, plain black with silver lettering: *Brambaro. The Velvet Pull.* “Think about it. No pressure.” *No pressure, right.* You take the card, his fingers brushing yours. “Okay,” you hear yourself say. “Okay, yes.” Bram’s grin widens. “Excellent. Shall we say tomorrow evening? Seven o’clock?” *And that was the beginning,* you think dazedly as you follow him up the stairs, the worn velvet of the theatre giving way to the hushed intimacy of his studio. *The beginning of… what?*
The studio is smaller than you expected, warm and dimly lit. Bookshelves line the walls, crammed with leather-bound volumes and strange, glittering objects – a crystal ball, a set of gleaming brass scales, what looks suspiciously like a shrunken head. *Focus, Leo. Be cool.* Bram gestures to a plush armchair. “Please, sit. Can I get you some tea?”
“Tea would be lovely,” you say, and your voice only shakes a little. Bram moves to a small kitchenette in the corner, filling a kettle, setting out mismatched mugs. You watch the easy grace of him – the roll of his shoulders under his dark shirt, the way his hips move when he reaches for the tea tin. *Stop staring, you creep.* “Your show was incredible,” you blurt to cover your awkwardness. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.”
Bram smiles over his shoulder. “You were a natural, Leo. Truly. That depth of response is rare.” He pours boiling water into the mugs, the scent of chamomile and something earthier – valerian? – filling the air. “Sugar? Milk?”
“Just milk, please.” You accept the mug he hands you, grateful for something to do with your hands. The china is warm, almost too hot, but you hold it tight. “So, um. This private session. What exactly…?”
Bram settles in the armchair opposite you, crossing his long legs. “Whatever you’re comfortable with. My stage show is all about entertainment – the power of suggestion, the theater of it. But private sessions are different. Deeper. More… intimate.” *Intimate.* The word hangs in the air between you, charged. “We can explore the boundaries of your responsiveness. See how far you’re willing to go.” He sips his tea, his gaze steady on yours. “If you’re willing, of course. This is entirely your choice, Leo. You say the word, and we stop. No questions, no pressure.”
You swallow hard. *No pressure, right.* The memory of that silver cord tugging you down, the feeling of perfect peace, perfect obedience… you want that again. Want it more than you’ve wanted anything in a long time. “I’m willing,” you say, and your voice sounds stronger this time. “I want to… explore.”
Bram’s smile is slow and warm. “Excellent.” He sets his mug aside and leans forward, elbows resting on his knees. “Let’s begin, then. I want you to focus on me, just like you did on stage. Let the world narrow to my voice, my words. Feel that silver cord again, anchoring you, pulling you down into yourself.” *Yes.* You close your eyes, sinking into the familiar warmth of his voice. “Deep asleep,” Bram murmurs, and you feel yourself falling, falling, into that soft, dark space where his words are the only truth. “Deep asleep and open to me.”
Time loses meaning. You float in a warm, weightless dark, Bram’s voice your only anchor. He guides you through a garden of impossible colors, makes you taste sunshine on your tongue, feel the brush of butterfly wings against your skin. *Beautiful,* you think hazily. *So beautiful.* Then his voice changes, deepens. “Leo, I want you to feel a warmth building in the pit of your stomach. A soft, golden warmth, spreading out through your limbs. With every breath, it grows warmer, brighter, until it fills you completely.” *Yes. Warm. So warm.* “This warmth is pleasure,” Bram says, and the word seems to vibrate through you. “Pure, perfect pleasure. And it’s yours to command.” *Command?* “I’m going to give you a trigger, Leo. A word that will unlock this feeling whenever you hear it. Would you like that?”
*Yes. God, yes.* “Yes,” you breathe, the word slipping out before you can think.
“Good.” Bram’s voice is a low purr, a physical caress against your skin. “The word is *solis*. When you hear it, you’ll feel this warmth, this pleasure, flooding through you. It will fill you up until there’s room for nothing else. Until all you can feel is pleasure, and all you can do is obey.” *Obey.* The word sends a shiver through you, half fear, half anticipation. “*Solis*,” Bram repeats, and the warmth explodes inside you, a supernova of golden light. You gasp, arching in the chair as pleasure crashes through you – sweet and sharp and overwhelming. *Oh god. Oh fuck.* “Good,” Bram says again, and his voice is the only thing keeping you tethered to the earth. “That’s the power of *solis*, Leo. Your pleasure, my voice. Your obedience, my will.” *Yes. Yours. All yours.* “Now, I want you to come back to me. Slowly. Gently. Leaving that warmth behind, but knowing it’s there, waiting for my word.” The pleasure fades, receding like a tide, leaving you limp and trembling in the chair. You blink your eyes open, dizzy and dazed.
Bram is watching you, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips. “Welcome back. How do you feel?”
You lick your lips, trying to gather your scattered thoughts. “I… wow. That was… intense.” *Understatement of the century.* “Is that… is that really a thing? The trigger word?”
