The Weight of Honey
Maya waved a dismissive hand, though pleasure pinked her cheeks. “Oh, hush. You’re biased.” She linked her arm through Chloe’s, her touch light but insistent. “Come see the centerpiece with me? I want to know what you really think.” Her eyes flicked to Ben. “We’ll bring her right back, promise.”
Chloe’s heart stuttered as Maya led her away, throwing a glance over her shoulder at Ben. He stood rooted for a moment, his expression unreadable, before Leo appeared at his side with two glasses of wine. Maya’s thumb traced idle circles on Chloe’s wrist as they stopped before a large, abstract sculpture – swirls of glazed clay in deep blues and greens that seemed to capture the motion of the sea.
“It’s called ‘Undertow,’” Maya murmured, her breath warm near Chloe’s ear. “What do you feel when you look at it?”
Chloe swallowed hard, her skin humming where Maya touched her. “I… I feel pulled,” she admitted softly. “Like it’s drawing me in.”
Maya’s fingers tightened on her arm. “Good. That’s what I hoped.” She turned Chloe to face her, her green eyes darkening. “There’s something I’ve been wanting to do since the moment you walked in.” Her gaze dropped to Chloe’s mouth. “Something I’ve wondered about for a long time.”
The noise of the gallery faded away – the clinking glasses, the low chatter – until all Chloe could hear was the rush of blood in her ears. Maya’s hand slid up her arm, leaving goosebumps in its wake, until it cupped her cheek. The first kiss was tentative, a brush of lips like butterfly wings, Maya’s breath mingling with hers in a silent question. Chloe’s gasp was soft, barely audible, as Maya kissed her again, deeper this time, her tongue teasing the seam of Chloe’s lips until they parted on a sigh.
Chloe’s hands fisted in the fabric of Maya’s jumpsuit as the kiss turned urgent, hungry, months of quiet curiosity igniting into flame. She was vaguely aware of the potted fern beside them, its fronds providing a fragile screen, but the rest of the room blurred into insignificance. All that existed was Maya’s mouth on hers, the press of their bodies, the dizzying scent of Maya’s jasmine perfume.
When they finally broke apart, breathing hard, Maya’s green eyes were dark with desire. “Wow,” she breathed, her thumb stroking Chloe’s kiss-swollen lower lip. “I knew it would be good, but… wow.”
Chloe trembled, her legs unsteady. “Maya, I—”
“Don’t,” Maya cut her off gently, her fingers threading through Chloe’s hair. “Just feel it. We don’t have to label it or pick it apart. Not yet.” Her gaze flicked over Chloe’s shoulder. “Though I think we’ve got some rapt attention.”
Chloe turned, her heart leaping into her throat. Across the gallery, Ben and Leo stood by the bar, their gazes locked on the two women. Ben’s expression was a mask of shock and something darker, hotter, his knuckles white around his wine glass. Leo watched with a quiet intensity, his dark eyes unreadable, a muscle ticking in his jaw.
“Oh god,” Chloe whispered, heat flooding her cheeks. “Ben… he’s—”
“Looking at you like he’s never seen you before,” Maya finished, her voice low. “And Leo… well, Leo’s thinking about what comes next.” She brushed another kiss to the corner of Chloe’s mouth. “And so am I.”
The walk back to their husbands felt like crossing an ocean. Chloe’s body thrummed with the aftermath of Maya’s kiss, her lips tender, her skin hypersensitive. Ben’s blue eyes tracked her every step, his gaze so intense it felt like a physical touch. When she reached his side, he pulled her close, his arm wrapping around her waist possessively.
“You okay?” he murmured, his breath warm against her temple. His body vibrated with tension, but his touch was gentle.
Chloe nodded, leaning into him. “I think so,” she whispered back. “Are you?”
Ben’s laugh was rough, strained. “I’m not sure ‘okay’ is the word I’d use.” His gaze found Leo’s over the top of her head. “But I’m not running either.” He pressed a kiss to her hair, his grip on her tightening. “Let’s find some air.”
They made their way to the gallery’s small balcony, the night air cool against Chloe’s flushed skin. Leo and Maya followed, the energy between the four of them crackling like downed power lines. The city lights twinkled below, distant stars in a concrete constellation.
Maya leaned against the railing, her laughter breaking the tense silence. “Well, that was an opening to remember.” Her green eyes danced with mischief as she looked at Chloe. “Worth the wait, I think.”
Leo moved to stand beside her, his gaze fixed on Ben. “Seems we have some things to discuss.” His voice was calm, but there was an undercurrent of hunger in it that made Chloe shiver.
Ben nodded, his jaw tight. “We do.” He pulled Chloe in front of him, her back to his chest, his arms caging her protectively. “But not here. Not like this.”
Maya’s smile softened. “Of course. Our place? We’ve got good bourbon and… privacy.”
The drive to the neighbors’ house passed in a blur of charged silence and pounding hearts. Chloe’s mind raced with possibilities, with the memory of Maya’s mouth on hers, with the heat of Ben’s body against her back on the balcony. She stole a glance at Ben as they parked, his profile sharp in the moonlight filtering through the windshield.
“You’re sure?” he asked quietly, his hand finding hers in the dark. “We can still call this off. Right now. No questions asked.”
Chloe squeezed his fingers, drawing strength from his solidity. “I’m sure,” she whispered. “Are you?”
Ben exhaled slowly, his thumb stroking her knuckles. “I think I have to be.” His voice was rough with emotion. “Because turning back now might break something in me.” He leaned across the console, kissing her hard, his tongue sweeping into her mouth in a claim that left her breathless. “No matter what happens in there… you’re mine, Chloe. First, last, always.”
“Always,” she echoed against his lips, the promise a lifeline in the dark. They walked hand-in-hand to the neighbors’ front door, the weight of honey heavy between them, the click of the lock echoing like a starting gun in the quiet night.
The door swung open before they could knock, Leo’s broad frame filling the doorway, his dark eyes glinting in the soft hallway light. “Took you long enough,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in Chloe’s bones. He stepped aside, allowing them entry into the warm glow of the neighbors’ home. The scent of jasmine and something earthier – Leo’s cologne, maybe – wrapped around them as they crossed the threshold.
Maya appeared at the end of the hallway, her green eyes bright, her earlier jumpsuit replaced by a flowing silk robe that clung to her curves. “This way,” she said, her voice husky as she led them down the hall to a guest room lit only by a single bedside lamp. The room was spacious, the king-sized bed draped in crisp white linens that seemed to glow in the dim light. Heavy curtains covered the windows, sealing them in a private world.
The click of the door closing behind Leo was deafening in the hushed silence. For a long moment, the four of them stood frozen, the air thick with anticipation and unspoken questions. Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, her skin tingling with awareness of the three pairs of eyes on her.
It was Maya who moved first, crossing the room to stand before Chloe, her fingertips trailing lightly up Chloe’s arms. “You’re trembling,” she murmured, her touch soothing and electrifying all at once. “Are you scared, sweetheart?”
Chloe swallowed hard, her gaze flicking to Ben beside her. He stood rigid, his jaw clenched, but his blue eyes blazed with a heat that mirrored the need coiling low in her belly. “Not scared,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Just… overwhelmed.”
Ben’s hand found hers, his fingers intertwining with hers, a silent anchor in the storm of sensation. “We can stop,” he said, his voice rough but steady. “Anytime.”
“No.” Chloe’s voice was stronger now, certain. “No, I want this.” She squeezed Ben’s hand before releasing it, her eyes locking with Maya’s. “I want *you*.”
The words hung in the air, a permission granted, a dam breaking. Maya’s smile was slow, sensual, as she cupped Chloe’s face and drew her in for another kiss. This one was softer than at the gallery, a gentle exploration that quickly deepened into something more urgent. Chloe whimpered into Maya’s mouth, her hands fisting in the silk of Maya’s robe as her body arched instinctively.
She felt Ben move behind her, his familiar hands settling on her hips, his breath warm against her neck. “Let me,” he murmured, his fingers finding the tie of her wrap dress. The fabric parted easily, falling away to reveal her lace-clad body to the room. The cool air against her heated skin made her shiver, her nipples pebbling beneath the thin fabric of her bra.
