The Welder's Touch
May We clock out under the weight of May's long light, the garage doors still open to the street, the day's last cars still trickling through, the day's grease still worked deep into the creases of our palms. Jamie's palms. We've only just met, only just started to learn the language of each other's exhaustion, the way his body leans into the doorframe, the way his body seems to hum with the same low frequency as mine. May We linger in the doorway, the last of the day's heat still rising off the concrete floor, still pooling in the hollows of our collarbones. We talk about nothing, about everything, about the way the city smells after rain, about the way our muscles ache after a long shift, about the way our bodies seem to recognize each other's fatigue. May He invites me up to his apart- ment, a small space above the garage, the air thick with the smell of oil and metal and something else, something sweet and faintly floral. We sit on the edge of his bed, our knees almost touching, our hands almost brushing against each other in the narrow space between us. May We talk for hours, our voices low and hushed in the dim light of his apartment, the sounds of the city drifting up from the street below. We talk about our jobs, about the way the work seems to settle into our bones, about the way we both feel most alive when we're working with our hands, when we're covered in grease and sweat and the grit of the day. May He reaches out, his fingers brushing against mine, a tentative touch that sends a shiver down my spine. We both freeze, our eyes locked in the dim light, our breath caught in our throats. And then he leans in, his lips brushing against mine, a whisper of a kiss that feels like a promise, like the beginning of some- thing new. May We spend the night together, our bodies tangled together in the narrow space of his bed, our skin slick with sweat and desire. We move together, slowly at first, then faster, our bodies learning the rhythm of each other's breath, the cadence of each other's heartbeat. May In the morning, we wake to the sound of the city stirring below, the smell of coffee brewing in the small kitchen, the feel of each other's bodies still warm and heavy with sleep. We don't say much, just lie there in the quiet, our fingers intertwined, our bodies pressed together, the weight of the day ahead already settling onto our shoulders. May But for now, in this moment, there is only the feel of his skin against mine, the sound of his breath in my ear, the way his body seems to fit perfectly against mine, like we were made for each other, like we've been waiting for this moment all our lives.
May We lie there for a long time, just breathing together, our bodies still humming with the after- glow of the night before. Eventually, we get up, our bodies stiff and sore from the night's exertions, from the long day's work before that. We take turns in the small shower, washing away the sweat and grime of the day, the smell of sex and desire that still clings to our skin. May Afterwards, we sit at the small kitchen table, sipping coffee and picking at the leftovers from the night before. We don't talk much, just sit in comfortable silence, our bodies still buzzing with the memory of each other's touch. May When it's time for me to leave, Jamie walks me to the door, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back. We pause in the doorway, our bodies close but not touching, the air between us thick with unspoken words. May "I'll see you soon," he says, his voice low and rough with sleep, with desire. I nod, my throat tight with emotion, with the weight of everything that's happened between us. May I lean in, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, feeling the rough stubble of his beard against my lips. And then I turn and walk away, my body already aching for his touch, my mind already racing with thoughts of when I'll see him again.
June The days grow longer, the heat of summer settling into our bones, into the very air we breathe. We steal moments together when we can, between shifts at the garage, between the long hours we spend hunched over engines and welding torches, our bodies aching with the strain of the work. June We meet in the park after work, sitting on the grass with our shirts off, letting the sun warm our skin, the sweat drying on our brows. We talk about every- thing and nothing, our conversation easy and comfortable, the silences between us filled with the hum of the city, the rustle of the leaves above us. June Sometimes, when the heat becomes too much, we retreat to Jamie's apartment, the fan whirring in the window, the air thick with the smell of our bodies, with the tang of metal and oil that never quite washes away. We lie on his bed, our bodies pressed together, our skin slick with sweat, the desire between us building like the pressure before a storm. June One weekend, we decide to get away, to escape the heat of the city, the constant demands of our jobs. We pack a bag and drive out to a small cabin in the woods, a place Jamie knows from his childhood, a place where we can be alone together, where we can explore the depths of our desire without interruption. June The cabin is small and rustic, the air inside cool and damp, smelling of pine and earth. We spend the days hiking through the woods, swimming in the nearby lake, our bodies moving together in the water, our skin slipping against each other, the desire between us building with each touch, each glance. June At night, we lie together in the narrow bed, the sound of the forest around us, the moonlight filtering through the trees. We explore each other's bodies with a new intensity, our hands and mouths moving over each other's skin, mapping out the contours of our desire, the places that make us gasp and tremble. June We make love for hours, our bodies moving together in a rhythm that feels as old as time, as natural as the forest around us. We lose ourselves in each other, in the feel of skin on skin, in the taste of each other's lips, in the sound of each other's breath, harsh and ragged in the stillness of the night. June Afterwards, we lie together in the darkness, our bodies spent and sated, our hearts beating in time. We talk about the future, about the life we want to build together, about the way our desire for each other seems to grow stronger with each passing day, with each moment we spend in each other's arms. June The weekend passes too quickly, and soon it's time to return to the city, to the demands of our jobs, to the reality of our lives. But something has shifted between us, something has deepened, and we both know that this is only the beginning, that there are many more moments like this to come, many more nights spent wrapped in each other's arms, lost in the depths of our desire.
September
The leaves are just starting to turn, the air crisp and cool against our skin as we walk home from work, our bodies aching with the familiar strain of the day's labor. We've been together for months now, our relationship deepening with each passing day, each shared moment, each whispered confession in the dark.
But it's not always easy, balancing the demands of our jobs with the needs of our relationship. There are days when we're both so exhausted that we barely have the energy to speak, let alone make love. Days when the stress of work, of bills, of life in general, feels like it's pressing down on us, threatening to crush us under its weight.
September
On those days, we cling to each other, our bodies pressed together in the dark, our breath mingling in the space between us. We remind ourselves of why we're here, of what we're fighting for. We remind ourselves of the way our bodies fit together, of the way our hearts seem to beat in time.

One particularly difficult week, when the stress of work has us both on edge, we decide to take a night for ourselves, to reconnect in the way that only we can. We turn off our phones, close the curtains, and light a few candles, the flickering light casting shadows on the walls, on our skin.
