The Whispering Walls of Willow Creek
Leo shook his head, his expression grim. "We’ll stop them, Archer. I promise you that."
I swallowed hard, my gaze falling to the letters scattered at my feet. "I know. But first...first I need to know the truth. All of it."
Leo nodded, his hand finding mine. "We’ll find it," he said, his voice low and fierce. "Together."
He led me out of the attic, out of the mansion, into the cool, clear night. We walked in silence, our hands clasped tight, the stars winking down at us from the vast, velvet sky.
At the edge of the property, where the manicured lawn gave way to wild, tangled forest, Leo stopped, turning to face me. The moonlight glinted off his hair, his eyes dark pools of shadow.
"Archer," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "I...I need you to know something."
I looked up at him, my heart pounding. "What is it?"
He took a step closer, his hand coming up to cup my cheek. "I’m falling for you," he murmured, his thumb stroking along my jaw. "I have been for a while now. Since the moment I met you, if I’m honest."
I sucked in a sharp breath, my skin tingling beneath his touch. "Leo, I—"
He silenced me with a kiss, his lips brushing against mine, soft and sweet and achingly tender. I melted into him, my arms winding around his neck, my body molding to his.
The world fell away, the danger, the secrets, the pain, all of it fading beneath the force of our kiss. There was only Leo, only the feel of him, the taste of him, the warmth of him seeping into my very bones.
We kissed until we were breathless, until our lungs burned and our heads spun, our bodies clinging together like two drowning men. When we finally broke apart, Leo rested his forehead against mine, his breath hot against my lips.
"I love you, Archer," he whispered, his voice raw with emotion. "I think I always have."
I closed my eyes, my heart swelling in my chest. "I love you too," I murmured, the words feeling more right than anything I’d ever said before. "More than I ever thought possible."
We stood there for a long moment, lost in each other, the stars bearing silent witness to our love. But even as I basked in the warmth of Leo’s embrace, I knew our happiness was fleeting. The truth was still out there, waiting to be uncovered. My father and Silas were still at large, still a threat.
But for now, in this moment, with Leo’s arms around me and his love a tangible thing between us, I let myself hope. Hope that we would find the answers we sought. Hope that we would stop my father and Silas before it was too late.
And hope that, when all was said and done, our love would be enough to see us through. To heal the wounds of the past and build a future together.
One kiss at a time.
We decided to go back to the mansion the next morning, after catching a few hours of fitful sleep. I called the police on the way, my heart pounding as I relayed what had happened. They said they’d send a car to meet us there, but I knew we couldn’t wait. We had to confront my father and Silas before they disappeared again.
The mansion loomed before us, its windows dark and watchful, like eyes in the night. I shivered, my hand tightening on Leo’s as we approached the door.
"Ready?" he murmured, his voice low and steady.
I nodded, my jaw clenched. "As I’ll ever be."
We stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of dust and decay. The house was silent, watchful, as if holding its breath.
We found them in the library, my father and Silas, hunched over the desk, poring over the documents we’d left behind. They looked up as we entered, their faces twisting with shock and rage.
"Archer," my father said, his voice deceptively calm. "I see you’ve brought your little friend."
"Father," I spat, the word tasting like bile on my tongue. "Or should I call you Thaddeus? Or maybe just ‘liar’?"
My father’s eyes flashed with anger. "You don’t understand, Archer. You never did."
"Oh, I understand perfectly," I snarled, my hands clenching into fists. "You faked your own death. You and Silas have been manipulating me, using me to get to the treasure. You killed Uncle Silas—"
"Killed him?" Silas laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Oh, no, nephew. That was all your father’s doing."
I froze, my blood running cold. "What?"
My father smiled, a cruel, twisted thing. "Silas was getting too close to the truth. Too close to taking what was rightfully mine. I had to stop him."
I shook my head, my mind reeling. "You...you killed your own brother?"
"He was never my brother," my father hissed, his eyes glinting with malice. "He was a thief. A liar. A threat to everything I’d worked for."
"And the treasure?" Leo cut in, his voice tight with anger. "What is it? What are you really after?"
My father laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "The treasure? It’s not gold or jewels, you fools. It’s power. The power to control, to manipulate, to shape the world to my will."
I stared at him, my stomach churning with revulsion. "You’re mad."
"Am I?" my father sneered. "Or am I just the only one with the courage to take what I want?"
He took a step forward, his hand reaching into his jacket. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a legacy to claim."
He pulled out a gun, leveling it at us with a steady hand. "Say goodbye, Archer. It’s a pity it had to end this way. But you always were a disappointment to me."
I braced myself, my heart pounding in my ears. This was it. The end.
But before my father could pull the trigger, Leo lunged forward, tackling him to the ground. The gun went off, the sound deafening in the small room.
I didn’t hesitate. I ran, my feet pounding the floor, my heart in my throat. I had to get help. Had to stop my father before it was too late.
But as I reached the door, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold. A scream, sharp and agonized, echoing through the house.
"Leo!" I shouted, whirling around.
But Leo was already moving, launching himself at my father in a flurry of fists and fury. The gun skittered across the floor, forgotten in the chaos.
I ran back, my heart pounding, my only thought to help Leo, to stop my father, to end this nightmare once and for all.
But as I reached them, my father’s hand shot out, grabbing me by the throat. He squeezed, his grip like iron, cutting off my air.
"Did you really think you could stop me, Archer?" he hissed, his face inches from mine. "I am your father. I am your better in every way."
I struggled, my vision blurring, my lungs burning. Leo lay motionless on the floor, blood trickling from his temple.
"Leo," I tried to say, but the word came out as a choked gasp.
My father laughed, a triumphant, terrible sound. "He can’t help you now, Archer. No one can."
He tightened his grip, his eyes blazing with madness. "Goodbye, son. Rot in hell."
The world began to fade, darkness creeping in at the edges of my vision. I fought it, fought with everything I had, but it was no use. My father was too strong. Too ruthless.
As the darkness claimed me, my last thought was of Leo, of the love we’d found, of the future we’d almost had.
And then, nothing.
I don’t know how long I was out. Minutes? Hours? When I finally came to, my head was pounding, my throat raw and aching. I was lying on the floor, my body heavy and leaden, my mind foggy with pain.
"Archer?" a voice whispered, soft and urgent. "Archer, can you hear me?"
I blinked, my vision slowly clearing. Leo knelt beside me, his face pale and drawn, a trickle of blood drying on his temple.
"Leo?" I croaked, my voice little more than a rasp. "You’re alive?"
He nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. "Alive and kicking. Thanks to you."
I pushed myself up, my head spinning. "Me? I didn’t do anything."
"You distracted him," Leo said, his hand coming up to brush my cheek. "Gave me a chance to fight back."
I leaned into his touch, my heart swelling with relief. "I thought I’d lost you."
"Never," Leo murmured, his eyes soft. "I’m not going anywhere. Not without you."
We helped each other to our feet, our bodies aching, our minds reeling. The library was a mess, books and papers scattered everywhere, the gun lying forgotten on the floor.
