Villa Vows

The tea cooled. Forgotten. Like the life I was supposed to live. The life they wanted for me. The life I no longer wanted.

A soft knock at my door. Late. Very late. I knew who it was. I opened the door. Cruz slipped inside. He wore only trousers. No shirt. His skin was golden in the low light.

"Caterina," he murmured. "I could not stay away."

"Cr-oo-z," I whispered. Teasing. But my voice was rough. With want.

He smiled. "Cat-er-ina." He pulled me close. Kissed me. Deep. Hungry. Full of need.

I kissed him back. Hard. My hands roamed his skin. Warm. Smooth. Muscled.

He walked me back. Toward the bed. "I want you," he said. Low. Rough. "I have wanted you. Since that first day. When you corrected my name."

I laughed. Soft. Breathless. "I wanted you too. Even then. When I hated you."

"Did you hate me?" He pushed my nightgown off my shoulder. Kissed the skin there.

"Yes." I arched into him. "A little."

"Good." He nipped my neck. "I hated you too. A little."

"Did you?" I tugged at his trousers. Pushed them down.

"Yes." He lifted me. Laid me on the bed. Covered me with his body. "But not now. Now I just want you."

"Take me," I whispered. "I am yours."

He did. With hands. With mouth. With body. He worshipped me. Consumed me. Made me his.

I gave myself to him. Fully. Completely. No holding back. No fear. Only want. Only him.

We moved together. Perfect rhythm. Perfect fit. Pleasure built. Crested. Crashed over us. Again. And again. Until we were spent. Breathless. Sated.

After, we lay tangled. Skin to skin. Heart to heart. The world outside faded. Only us. Only this.

"Caterina," he murmured. "My Caterina."

"Cruz," I whispered. "My Cruz."

We talked. Of the future. Of escape. Of the life we would build. Together. Free.

The tea on the table grew cold. Forgotten. Like the past. Like the families. Like the life we were leaving behind.

But in the dark. In the quiet. In his arms. I found my future. My freedom. My love.

The wedding was tomorrow. A new beginning. Or a new cage. We did not know. But tonight, for this moment, we were free. Together. And that was enough.

The wedding day dawned clear and bright. A mockery of sunshine for such a dark affair. I dressed in white silk. A symbol of purity. A joke. Cruz stood at the altar. Impeccable in black. His face blank. His eyes dark. Unreadable.

The ceremony passed in a blur. Words. Promises. Lies. I spoke my vows. Cruz spoke his. Our voices flat. Empty. The families watched. Smiles on their faces. Ice in their eyes.

After, at the reception, the tension crackled. Like dry wood before a fire. My father pulled me aside. "Caterina. You did well. Now. You know what to do."

I knew. The loyalty test. The final demand. My father wanted Cruz. Dead. To send a message. To the Bianchi family. To me.

Cruz's father wanted the same. From his son. My death. A symbol of power. Of control.

We were pawns. In their game. But we were done playing.

I found Cruz on the terrace. Away from the crowd. "It is time," I said. "They want their proof. Their loyalty."

He turned. His face hard. "I know. My father made his demand. Your death. To seal the alliance. To show strength."

"My father wants yours." I took his hand. "We cannot do it. We will not."

"No." He pulled me close. "We will not."

"We have to leave. Now." I looked up at him. "Before they realize. Before they stop us."

"Yes." He kissed me. Hard. Quick. "Let's go."

We slipped away. Through the gardens. To the garage. Cruz had a car ready. We got in. He drove. Fast. Away from the villa. Away from the families. Away from the life.

I looked back. Once. The villa loomed. Stone walls. Tall windows. My prison. Now free.

In the rearview mirror, I saw it. The tea cup. On a table. Left behind. Cold now. Forgotten. Like the life I was leaving. Like the cage I had escaped.

Cruz reached for my hand. Held it tight. "We are free," he said. "Finally free."

I smiled. "Free." I squeezed his hand. "Together."

We drove. Into the night. Into the future. Into our new life. No looking back. Only forward. Only us.

The road stretched before us. Dark. Unknown. But not scary. Not with him. Not anymore.

I leaned back. Closed my eyes. Breathed deep. The air smelled of freedom. Of him. Of us.

The villa faded. The families faded. The past faded. Only the future remained. Bright. Open. Ours.

Cruz drove on. Silent. Strong. Mine.

I opened my eyes. Looked at him. "I love you," I said. Soft. Sure.

He glanced at me. Smiled. "I love you too." His voice was rough. With emotion. With truth.

We drove. Together. Toward our ever after. Toward our earned HEA. Toward our freedom. Finally.

The tea cup sat on the table. Back at the villa. Cold. Forgotten. A relic of a life left behind. A symbol of a cage escaped. As we drove away, into the night, into our future, it remained. A quiet observer of our escape. To our love. To our freedom.
