Interference Patterns

(pause)

**NICO:** (singing, voice rising, building) *Static interference, loud and clear,* *But your signal cuts right through the fear,* *Static interference, day and night,* *But your frequency…*

(pause, the music holds, suspended)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Here it comes. The line. The original line. “Sets my world alight.” That’s what it’s supposed to be. What the lyric sheet says. What the band expects. What management… demands. My fingers… tighten on the fader. Knuckles white. Heart… stop.

(pause)

**NICO:** (singing, clear, deliberate, into the sudden quiet) *...is Gemma... in my sights.*

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Oh god. He… he did it. He said it. My name. On stage. In front of thousands. In front of… everyone. “Gemma… in my sights.” Not “sets my world alight.” My name. My real name. My heart… stops. Completely. The world… tilts. The soundboard… swims before my eyes. Breathe. Just… breathe. He… he claimed me. Publicly. Undeniably. In the middle of our song. Our secret song. Not so secret anymore.

**CROWD:** (roaring, through the PA, slightly delayed) YEAHHHHHH! GEMMA! GEMMA! NICO! NICO!

**GEMMA:** (whispering) The crowd… they erupt. They heard it. They know. My name. My… real name. Not “sound girl.” Not “mystery muse.” Gemma. The roar… it’s deafening. Even through the headphones. The floor… vibrating. With their stomping. Their approval. Their… acceptance? Or just… the thrill of the scandal? The drama? The… reveal.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** I can’t… think. Can’t… breathe. My eyes… find his. Across the distance. Through the haze. The lights. The madness. He’s looking… right at me. Through the glare. A small smile. Just for me. Private. Intimate. Even now. Even here. In front of the world. My name… still hanging in the air. Echoing. In the rafters. In my bones.

(pause)

**NICO:** (singing, quieter now, just for the mic, for me) *Static interference… finally clear…*

**GEMMA:** (whispering) The rest of the song… it’s a blur. My hands… moving on autopilot. Keeping the levels. Keeping the show… going. While my world… fractures. Reforms. Around that one word. That one name. My name. Spoken. Claimed. In the spotlight. No more hiding. No more secrets. No more… closets. Just… us. Out in the open. For better or worse.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** The song ends. The crowd… still roaring. Chanting now. “Gemma! Nico! Gemma! Nico!” Like a wave. Crashing over the stage. Over me. He stands there. Soaked in sweat. In adoration. In… defiance. Looking at me. That smile… still there. Wider now. Freer. Proud. Unafraid. My heart… cracks open. Just a little. Letting in… the light. The sound. The… possibility. Of what comes next. Now that the secret… isn’t a secret anymore. Now that the static… is finally clear.

(recording stops)

(recording starts)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Lisbon. Backstage. 12:18 AM. The bus… is quiet. Everyone… crashed. After the… triumph. The show. The… revelation. My name. Still echoing. In my head. In the… silence. I couldn’t… sleep. Couldn’t… breathe in that tiny bunk. Not with… everything. So… I walked. Back to the stage. To the scene… of the crime. The empty space. The ghost light. Casting long shadows. On the boards. Where he… claimed me. In front of everyone.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** And he’s… here. Of course. Standing center stage. Looking out… at the empty seats. Hands in his pockets. Shoulders… relaxed. Calm. Like he hasn’t… just blown up his entire life. Our lives. For… a name. For me. The sight of him… it does things. To my stomach. To my… resolve. To the careful walls I’ve built. Since Barcelona. Since… the pictures. Since the world… crashed in.

(pause)

**NICO:** (quietly, not turning around) Couldn’t sleep?

**GEMMA:** (startled, whispering) No. I… How did you…?

**NICO:** (turns, slight smile) Knew you’d come. Eventually. Back to the scene… of the crime. You always do. When you’re… wrestling with something. With… us. The stage… it calls you. Like it calls me.

**GEMMA:** (whispering) It’s… quiet now. Peaceful. Unlike… earlier. Unlike… my head.

**NICO:** (nods, takes a step closer) Yeah. Peaceful. Good place… to think. To… talk. Finally. Without… management. Without the band. Without… the crowd chanting your name.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** (voice tight) You… you shouldn’t have done that. Said my name. Like that. On stage. In front… of everyone. After Madrid. After Janice… after Marta…

**NICO:** (shrugs, another step closer) Maybe not. But I did. Felt… right. In the moment. In the song. You… belong in that song. You belong… here. With me. Not… hidden. Not… deleted.

**GEMMA:** (whispering) They’ll… crucify you. For that. For… us. Management. The label. The press. They’ll say… you’re unprofessional. That I’m… a distraction. A… groupie. A…

**NICO:** (firm, cutting her off) Let them. I don’t… care. Not anymore. Not about… that. Not about the… image. The brand. The bullshit. I care… about this. About you. About… us. Real. Not… secret. Not… ashamed.

**GEMMA:** (voice breaking) It’s… not that simple. You know it’s not. There are… consequences. Contracts. Careers. The band… Gardner, Marta… they were…

**NICO:** (softly, closer still) Marta will get over it. Or she won’t. Gardner… he’ll adapt. He always does. Janice… she works for us. Not the other way around. The label… they want hits. We give them hits. The rest… is noise. Static. Interference. We… we’re the signal. The clear one. Finally.

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Nico… I…

**NICO:** (reaches out, slowly, tucks a strand of hair behind her ear) You… what? Tell me. No more… secrets. No more… diaries deleted in the dark. Talk to me. Here. Now. On our stage.

(pause, charged)

**GEMMA:** (leaning into his touch, just slightly) I… I was scared. Okay? Terrified. Of… this. Of losing… everything. The job. The tour. You. When the pictures… when the world… saw. I thought… it was over. That we were… done. That I’d… ruined it. Ruined you.

**NICO:** (thumb brushing her cheekbone, voice low) Nothing… is ruined. Except maybe… my ability to give a damn… about what they think. What they say. What they… threaten. You… you’re not a ruin, Gemma Napoli. You’re… the only thing that makes sense. In all of this. In… this whole damn circus.

**GEMMA:** (closing her eyes, leaning further into his hand) Nico…

**NICO:** (pulls her closer, slowly, deliberately) Dance with me.

**GEMMA:** (eyes fluttering open, surprised) What? Here? Now? There’s no… music.

**NICO:** (smiling, that small, private smile) We don’t need music. We make our own. Always have. In storage closets. In… the spaces between. Hum with me.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Okay. Yeah. Okay.

(Nico pulls her into his arms, slowly, deliberately. One hand finds the small of her back, warm, possessive. The other clasps her hand, fingers intertwining. They start to sway, almost imperceptibly at first, under the harsh work lights. The ghost light casts their long, intertwined shadow across the stage floor.)

**NICO:** (humming softly, tunelessly at first, then finding a slow, sweet melody) Remember… Paris? That storage closet? Smelled like… dust. And leather. And… you. Your shampoo. Coconut. Couldn’t… breathe. Wanted… to kiss you so badly. Almost did. Daphne… walking by. Saved by the… photographer.

**GEMMA:** (resting her head against his shoulder, voice muffled) I remember. Your jacket. The smell of it. Like… home. Like… safety. Even then. Even… hiding. I… I wanted you to kiss me. So much. Almost… did it myself.

**NICO:** (humming, swaying, hand tightening on her back) Should have. Should have… ignored the world. Then. Like I did… tonight. On this stage. With your name. In the lights.

**GEMMA:** (turning her head, whispering against his neck) Why… why did you? Really? Not just… defiance. Not just… the song. Why?

**NICO:** (stops humming, voice low, rough) Because… I’m tired. Tired of… hiding. Tired of… pretending you’re not… everything. Tired of… watching you from across the room. Tired of… almost. Tired of… not.

(pause, charged, heavy)

**GEMMA:** (lifts her head, looks up at him, eyes wide, dark) Nico… I…

**NICO:** (leans down, slowly, so slowly, giving her time, giving her space, but his intent… clear. His breath ghosts over her lips. His eyes… holding hers. Asking. Telling.)

**GEMMA:** (whispers, the word lost against his mouth) …please…

(He closes the distance. The kiss… isn’t gentle. Not after weeks of pent-up want, of denial, of public scandal and private fear. It’s hungry. Demanding. Apology and absolution and need, all wrapped up in the slide of lips, the clash of teeth, the tangle of tongues. She meets him halfway, her arms sliding up around his neck, pulling him closer, deeper. No more almost. No more hiding. Just… this. Them. On the empty stage. Under the work lights. The ghost light their only witness.)

(recording stops)

**GEMMA:** (whispering) Lisbon. Tour bus. My bunk. 11:03 AM. The morning after. Everyone’s sleeping. Or pretending to. The bus is quiet. My body still hums. With him. His hands. His mouth. His certainty. On that stage. No regrets. Not anymore.

(pause)

**GEMMA:** He’s gone. Slipped out early. A mumbled explanation to Gardner. Radio interview. Damage control. Janice’s idea. After last night. After my name echoed. Nico just nodded. Calm. But his eyes… a promise. And a warning. *Listen*.

(pause)
