Midnight Run

You're reading this because you want to know what happened. You want to understand how a single moment can change everything. Well, let me tell you.

The clock on the wall reads 9:47 PM. I'm sitting in my apartment, staring at the blinking cursor on my computer screen. Another deadline, another story. But this one... this one is different.

I'm Ava Sinclair, an investigative journalist. I've always been drawn to the truth, no matter how dangerous it might be. But tonight, I witnessed something that could get me killed.

I saw a murder.

I was working late, following a lead on a corrupt politician, when I heard a scream. I ran to the window and saw a man being shot in cold blood. The killer looked up, and our eyes met. I knew I had to get out of there.

That's when I met Liam Carter. He's an ex-SEAL turned bodyguard, hired to protect me. He's stoic, highly skilled, and has a protective nature. But there's something about him, a hidden past that I can't quite figure out.

The clock on the dashboard reads 11:23 PM. We're in Liam's car, speeding away from the city. The police are looking for us, and we're framed for the murder. We have no choice but to go on the run.

"Where are we going?" I ask, my voice shaking.

"Somewhere safe," Liam replies, his eyes fixed on the road. "A cabin in the mountains. We'll lay low there until we can figure out our next move."

I nod, trying to trust him. But how can I trust a man I barely know? How can I be sure he's not involved in this somehow?

The clock on the cabin wall reads 2:15 AM. We've arrived at the remote cabin, deep in the woods. It's small, rustic, and smells of pine. Liam is checking the perimeter, making sure we're alone.

I sit on the edge of the bed, my mind racing. I can't shake the image of the murder, the sound of the gunshot ringing in my ears. I feel like I'm trapped in a nightmare, and I can't wake up.

Liam enters the room, his presence filling the small space. He sits down beside me, his eyes searching mine.

"Are you okay?" he asks, his voice low and gruff.

I nod, but I'm not okay. I'm scared, and I don't know who to trust.

"We need to talk," Liam says, his gaze intense. "I need to know everything you saw, everything you know."

I take a deep breath and start from the beginning. I tell him about the corrupt politician, the lead I was following, and the murder I witnessed. Liam listens intently, his jaw clenching as I describe the killer.

"We're in deep trouble," he says when I finish. "The people behind this... they're powerful. They'll stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden."

I feel a chill run down my spine. I knew this was dangerous, but hearing Liam say it out loud makes it all too real.

"What do we do now?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

Liam's eyes meet mine, and for a moment, I see a flicker of something in their depths. Something that looks like fear.

"We stay alive," he says, his voice steady and grounded. "We trust each other, and we fight. No matter what happens, we don't give up."

I nod, trying to find strength in his words. But the truth is, I'm not sure I have the strength to keep going. I'm not sure I can trust anyone, even Liam.

The clock on the nightstand reads 3:42 AM. I'm lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Liam is in the next room, keeping watch. I can hear the sound of his breathing, steady and even.

I close my eyes, trying to block out the memories of the night. But every time I do, I see the face of the killer, the look in his eyes as he pulled the trigger.

I don't know what tomorrow will bring. I don't know if we'll make it out of this alive. But I know one thing for sure.

I won't stop fighting. I won't stop searching for the truth. And I won't let them win.

The clock on the nightstand reads 8:13 AM. I wake up to the smell of coffee and the sound of Liam moving around in the kitchen. I sit up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My body aches from the tension of the past few hours, but my mind is clear.

I know what I have to do. I have to find the truth, no matter what it takes.

I walk into the kitchen and see Liam standing at the counter, his back to me. He's wearing a faded t-shirt and jeans, his hair still damp from a shower. For a moment, I let myself admire the way his muscles move beneath his shirt, the way his broad shoulders fill the small space.

"You're awake," he says without turning around.

"I am," I reply, my voice still rough with sleep. "Did you get any rest?"

Liam turns to face me, his eyes bloodshot and tired. "I caught a few hours," he says, handing me a mug of coffee. "But we need to get moving. The sooner we figure out what's going on, the better."

I nod, taking a sip of the hot liquid. It's strong and bitter, just the way I like it.

"I've been thinking," I say, setting the mug down on the counter. "The man I saw murdered... he was a whistleblower. He was going to expose a corruption scandal involving a powerful politician."

Liam's eyes narrow. "Who?"

"Senator Rick Hawkins," I reply. "He's been accused of taking bribes from a big oil company in exchange for political favors."

Liam lets out a low whistle. "That's a big fish, Ava. You're sure about this?"

I nod. "I've been investigating him for months. The man who was killed... his name was Michael Thompson. He was Hawkins' aide. He had evidence that could bring Hawkins down."

"And now he's dead," Liam says, his voice grim. "And we're being framed for it."

I feel a surge of anger at his words. "We can't let them get away with this, Liam. We have to find the evidence Michael had and expose the truth."

Liam nods, his jaw set with determination. "Okay," he says. "Where do we start?"

I take a deep breath, my mind racing. "Michael had a safety deposit box at a bank downtown. He told me once that he kept all his important documents there, in case anything ever happened to him."

Liam's eyes widen. "You think the evidence is there?"

"It's our best shot," I reply.

Liam nods, grabbing his keys from the counter. "Then let's go."

The clock on the dashboard reads 9:45 AM. We're back in the city, driving towards the bank. Liam is tense behind the wheel, his eyes constantly scanning the road for any sign of trouble.

I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins, the rush of danger and excitement that always comes with a big story. But this time, the stakes are higher than ever. This time, it's not just my career on the line, but my life.

"We need to be careful," Liam says as we pull up to the bank. "If Hawkins is behind this, he'll have people watching the bank. They'll be looking for us."

I nod, my heart pounding in my chest. "I know. But we don't have a choice. We need that evidence."

Liam parks the car and turns to face me. "Okay," he says. "Here's the plan. You go in and get the safety deposit box. I'll keep watch outside. If anything happens, if you see anything suspicious, you get out of there immediately. Understand?"

I nod, taking a deep breath. "Understand."

I walk into the bank, my heels clicking on the polished marble floor. The air is cool and sterile, the sound of typing and low conversation filling the space.

I approach the safety deposit box counter, my palms sweating as I fill out the necessary paperwork. The clerk, a young woman with a bored expression, hands me the key and points me towards the vault.

My heart is racing as I unlock the box and pull out the contents. Inside, there's a thick manila envelope, stuffed with papers and photographs.

I open the envelope and start flipping through the contents. My eyes widen as I take in the evidence Michael had gathered. Emails, bank statements, photographs... it's all here. Everything we need to bring Hawkins down.

Suddenly, I hear a commotion outside the vault. I peek out and see two men in dark suits approaching the counter, their eyes scanning the room.

My heart stops. They're looking for me.

I quickly stuff the envelope into my purse and slip out of the vault, keeping my head down as I make my way towards the exit.
