Midnight Run

But just as I reach the door, one of the men spots me. He shouts something to his partner and they start running towards me.

I burst out of the bank, my heart pounding in my chest. Liam is waiting by the car, his eyes wide as he sees me running towards him.

"Get in!" he shouts, starting the engine.

I dive into the passenger seat and Liam hits the gas, the car peeling out of the parking lot just as the men reach us.

I look behind us and see them standing in the middle of the road, their faces twisted with anger.

"We did it," I say, my voice shaking with adrenaline. "We got the evidence."

Liam glances at me, a grin spreading across his face. "You did good, Ava. Really good."

I feel a surge of pride at his words. For the first time since this whole nightmare started, I feel like we might actually have a chance.

The clock on the dashboard reads 10:23 AM. We're driving away from the city, the envelope of evidence sitting between us like a bomb ready to explode.

"We need to go through this," Liam says, nodding towards the envelope. "We need to know exactly what we're dealing with."

I nod, my mind already racing with the possibilities. "There's a motel off the highway, about an hour from here. We can stop there, lay low for a while."

Liam nods, his eyes fixed on the road. "Okay."

We drive in silence for a while, the tension in the car thick enough to cut with a knife. I can feel Liam's presence beside me, the heat of his body, the strength of his arm as he shifts gears.

I glance at him out of the corner of my eye, taking in the sharp lines of his profile, the stubble on his jaw. He's handsome, in a rugged, dangerous kind of way. And there's something about him, something that draws me in, despite the danger we're in.

"Can I ask you something?" I say, my voice soft.

Liam glances at me, his eyes guarded. "What?"

"Why did you become a bodyguard? After the SEALs, I mean."

Liam is silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on the road. "I needed a change," he says finally. "I needed to do something that mattered, something that made a difference."

I nod, understanding the feeling all too well. "Is that why you took this job? To protect me?"

Liam shrugs. "It's my job, Ava. It's what I do."

"But why me?" I press. "You could have said no. You could have walked away."

Liam sighs, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know," he says. "There was just something about you, something that made me want to help."

I feel a warmth spread through my chest at his words. "Well," I say, my voice light. "I'm glad you did."

Liam glances at me, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Me too, Ava. Me too."

The clock on the motel room wall reads 12:07 PM. We're sitting on the bed, the contents of the envelope spread out between us.

There's a lot to go through – emails, bank statements, photographs. But one thing is clear – Senator Hawkins is guilty. He took bribes from the oil company, and he had Michael killed to cover it up.

"We need to get this to the authorities," Liam says, his voice grim. "But we can't trust the police. Hawkins has too many connections."

I nod, my mind racing. "What about the FBI? They have a field office in the city."

Liam shakes his head. "It's too risky. We don't know who we can trust."

I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "So what do we do? We can't just sit on this evidence forever."

Liam is silent for a moment, his eyes distant. "I might know someone," he says finally. "Someone who can help."

I raise an eyebrow. "Who?"

Liam hesitates, his jaw clenching. "My old SEAL commander. He works for a private security firm now. He has connections, people he trusts."

I nod, hope blooming in my chest. "Can we trust him?"

Liam meets my gaze, his eyes intense. "With my life."

I take a deep breath, my heart pounding. "Okay," I say. "Let's do it."

Liam nods, reaching for his phone. "I'll set up a meeting. We'll have to be careful, but if anyone can help us, it's him."

I watch as Liam dials the number, his fingers tense on the screen. I can feel the danger closing in around us, the net tightening with every passing second.

But for the first time since this whole nightmare started, I feel like we might actually have a chance. We have the evidence, and we have each other. And maybe, just maybe, that's enough.

The clock on the nightstand reads 11:38 PM. We're lying in bed, the sound of the highway outside the only noise in the room.

Liam is asleep beside me, his chest rising and falling with each steady breath. I watch him for a moment, my heart swelling with a feeling I can't quite name.

Is it love? I'm not sure. But whatever it is, it's strong. Strong enough to keep me going, even in the face of danger.

I close my eyes, letting the exhaustion of the day wash over me. Tomorrow, we'll meet with Liam's commander. Tomorrow, we'll take the next step in bringing Hawkins to justice.

But for now, in this moment, I feel safe. I feel protected.

And that's enough.

The clock on the dashboard reads 9:15 AM. We're driving down a winding country road, the trees closing in around us. Liam is tense behind the wheel, his eyes constantly scanning the rearview mirror.

I feel the weight of the evidence in my lap. "Liam," I say softly. "Can I ask you something?"

He glances at me, his eyes guarded. "What is it?"

"What happened in the SEALs? Why did you leave?"

Liam is silent for a moment. When he speaks, his voice is low and rough. "I lost someone. A friend. A brother. He was killed in action, and I blamed myself."

I feel a pang of sympathy. "It wasn't your fault."

Liam shrugs, his jaw tight. "I was his commanding officer. It was my job to keep him safe."

I reach out, placing a hand on his arm. "You can't blame yourself, Liam."

Liam glances at me, his eyes softening. "I know that now. But it took me a long time to realize it. I left the SEALs because I couldn't handle the guilt."

I nod, understanding. "And now? Do you still feel that way?"

Liam shakes his head. "No. I've made peace with it. I know that I did everything I could to keep him safe."

I smile. "He sounds like a good man."

Liam nods. "He was. The best."

The clock on the dashboard reads 10:47 AM. We're parked outside a small, nondescript house. Liam's commander, a tall, broad-shouldered man with a military haircut, is waiting for us on the porch.

Liam introduces me, and the commander nods, his eyes sharp. "I'm John. I've heard a lot about you, Ava."

I raise an eyebrow. "Oh? All good things, I hope."

John chuckles. "Mostly. But I'll let Liam fill you in."

We follow John inside. He leads us into the living room and gestures for us to sit. "Tell me everything."

Liam and I take turns explaining. John listens intently. When we finish, he sits back. "You two have stumbled into something big."

I nod. "Can you help us?"

John nods. "I can. But it won't be easy. Hawkins has a lot of power."

Liam leans forward. "What do you suggest?"

John sighs. "We need to get this evidence to the right people. I have contacts in the FBI."

I feel a surge of hope. "When can we meet with them?"

John shakes his head. "We need to be careful. We'll make copies of everything, store them in multiple locations."

I nod. "And then?"

John meets my gaze. "And then we go public. We leak the story to the press."

The clock on the wall reads 1:15 PM. John has left to meet with his contacts. Liam and I are alone. I can feel the tension between us.

Liam turns to me, his eyes dark. "Ava," he says, his voice rough.

I step towards him. "Yes?" I whisper.

Liam reaches out, his hand cupping my cheek. "I can't stop thinking about you. I want you so badly it hurts."

I lean into his touch. "Then take me," I whisper.

Liam groans, his arms wrapping around me. His lips crash down on mine. We stumble backwards, falling onto the couch. Liam's hands are everywhere, stroking my skin.

I gasp as his fingers find my nipple. I reach for his jeans, fumbling with the button. Liam groans as I free his cock.

"Fuck," he breathes, his hips bucking.
